Going out for breakfast...Calories?

Quote  |  Reply

My dad wants me to go out for coffee/breakfast with him in the morning. I admit I want to go but I'm also really worried. I don't know how many calories are in what they serve at the cafe we are going to. (Furthermore, I want to consume as little as possible in terms of calories here because, obviously...it's out-to-eat and eeek!)

I know I'm going to get a cappuccino with sugar free vanilla flavor and skim milk. So that should be around 75 calories, I think. Either way, less than 100, right? It is the food part I am worried about. I know that they have scones and muffins, but I tend to shy away from that because even though they are delicious I know they aren't healthy and...yeah. A crap load of empty calories.

This place has breakfast sandwiches, though. If I got something like an egg and cheese breakfast sandwhich, I think the choices of bread that it comes on are: english muffin (dunno what kind), croissant, or a bagel. On average, about how many calories do you think would be in that...?

I know that they also have different breakfast sandwiches as well, some with meats, and others that I don't remember. But I'm aiming for the least calorie-filled meal here.

Thanks to anyone who replies. I'm completely lost here...I don't know if I will over or under estimate by myself.

Also, just a quick last question...do you think this will be unhealthy? Like, extremely? I worry a lot about this. I'm afraid if I eat the wrong thing, or too much, I'm going to suddenly gain a lot of weight or something. (Yes, a mini-ED type of thing or something...)

You sound excited to go out, so just enjoy yourself! Eat healthy (normally) the rest of the day, and you really should be fine. After all, it takes 3,500 calories to gain a real pound, and I doubt anything you eat would add up to that much.

At most you might gain a little water weight if the food has lots of sodium, but if you drink a lot of water, it will go away quickly.

So enjoy a little splurge!

Is your dad going to blow up 10 lbs. after your breakfast tomorrow, along with everyone else in there? Absolutely not. They probably won't gain any weight from that one meal alone at all. This means, neither will you.

Enjoy yourself!

Don't let your worry keep you from having a good time with your dad and enjoying your meal!  But I get it, I do the same thing, try not to blow the calories at out-to-eat breakfasts/brunches.  If you're worried, pick a dish ahead of time and then look up rough calorie contents (you can do it right on this site with the Food Log search or the recipe converter).  Or if you're not sure what you'll eat, just pick a few, jot 'em down on a note and carry 'em with you.  That way, you're a bit more informed (and so you know that the egg sandwhich cooked in butter may really NOT be the way to go, and you get the musli instead).

Whatever you end up doing, just remember that the food isn't really the important part -- it's the visit with your dad.  You'll have fun no matter what you eat.

And if the coffee is good, that should get you through any situation! :)

An english muffin is typically 120 calories (without butter/jelly/etc).  A croissant is probably between 300-500 calories.  And a large bagel is usually around 350 calories, while those mini bagels are like 150 calories.

I would go with the cappucino (make it a small) and a large fruit salad.  Focus on enjoying your food, but also keep the main focus on enjoying the time with your dad.  That's what the meal is really all about?  It will help you divert your attention from food, and really turn it into a social event, like it's supposed to be.  Try to enjoy yourself, and if you do "slip up" forgive yourself, but try to keep the rest of the days calories to a minimum.  But remember, it is okay to indulge once in a while.

I usually get two eggs poached with butter-less toast. Sometimes pancakes with fruit compote or banana pancakes. Just have fun- dont worry too much about the calorie count! One day isnt going to make you fat!

When I go out to breakfast I get an egg white omlette with lots of veggies. I tell them to keep the wheat toast dry (because they load on the butter) and substitute the potatoes or just eat a few of them. You will be fine. Like everyone else said, enjoy the breakfast!

Oatmeal is always a good option and if you pair it with a side of fuit it's filling too.  Don't focus so much on the calories or you will forget that it's suposed to be a fun time with your dad.
