What are some of the healthiest options out there for breakfast cereals? I don't really know what I should be looking for. My college dining hall has a "cereal bar" with 20 different kinds of cereal, but I never know what to get. I steer away from the obviously sugary cereals like lucky charms and cinnamon toast crunch. But even some of the "healthy" cereals seem like they are pretty sugary, or are high in calories, or don't have whole grains, or something. Is there a cereal out there that has it all?
right now I'm eating Smart Start cereal (though to me it tastes just a sugary as lucky charms), Raisin Bran, Total, or good old-Cheerios :-) I'm getting kind of bored though... any suggestions?
Also, any good ideas for cereal toppings? I do bananas a lot, but that's getting old too. Sometimes i add dried cranberries, but they are so sugary. I think tomorrow I might try sprinkling cinnamon on my cheerios. Any other ideas?
I also have a weakness for Cracklin' Oat Bran... has a healthy-sounding name but definitely is NOT... sooo yummy though! Sometimes I'll mix in 1/4 c. of Cracklin oat bran with whatever healthy cereal i'm having.

There are actually a lot of good cereals out there that Kashi Makes. I would recommend any of their varieties, including their oatmeal, which is good for fuel in the morning.
They have fat-free cheerios. Those are good. Huney Bunches of oats are good too. Special K too. Kix is one of the lowest in calories and really yummy ! Strawberries are a good cereal topper. or blueberries.
I have oatmeal every morning. I usually add milled flax seed and spenda but nothing else just old fashioined oats.
Personally, I wouldn't choose any brand from Kellogg's. Most of their cereals have poor nutritional value and are packed with sugar (just read the ingredients on the label). Also...I have read from several sources that Kellogg's has NOT been involved with the banning of TRANS FAT from their products. So I would be careful! Believe me, I used to eat Special K every morning, but not any more!
That being said, go for cereals that have at least 3 grams of fiber per serving and less than 9 grams of sugar per serving. My favorite picks are Total or Cheerios. If you read on the label the first ingredient/word should be "Whole" grain. I don't really like Kashi because they tend to make me feel bloated...but that's just me.

I vote for Mr. Bumbles breakfast, not sure if it's available on your side. It's basically a mix of bran, oats, mixed nuts and seeds and dried fruit. approx. 199 cal for 100 grams. Uber-yummy with yogurt!
I second the Kashi cereals rec. They are yummy, have lots of whole grains, and very light on sugar.
In the UK, the Kashi brand is owned by Kelloggs.... but the nutritional content still looks pretty reasonable - I might give it a try!
Do they serve Total?
they don't have Total at the dining hall, but i just got a box of whole grain total from the Campus Market, and it's really yummy! Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
I really enjoy 'Grain Shop' High Fibre Crisp. It is available in grocery stores inCanada - not sure about the US. It is manufactured here by Weetabix Canada. It is a nice balance of fibre (not bad at 4g/serving) and sweetness (could be better at 5g/serving)
I eat Special K Protein Plus 100 cals for 3/4 C .I add 1/2 C of skim milk. And Blueberries...lots of blueberries. It's really satisfying and has a cinnamon flavor. Good Stuff.
i am eating raisin bran right now... not the best ive tried.... but noneless... good!!!
wow! after reading this thead, I've realized that I'm eating the wrong cereal....(well in calories that is). I've been eating the Presidents Choice raisin & almond granola; 220 cals for 2/3C and with 1/2 a cup of 1% milk it brings it up to 270 cals. What got me to buy it was that it's a multigrain blend, made with whole grain oats. I think I'll start looking into buying a different brand. :)
Also if you're going to eat raisin bran, it's a lot healthier to pick a plain flake cereal and then add the raisins yourself. The raisins in any raisin bran have been processed and sugared to make them stay fresh longer. (This from my uncle who works at General Mills)
steel cut irish oats, i swear by them, you cant put anything better into your body.
I agree buleberries are a good topping- but so are raisins.
I'm not sure if this is healthy, but according to the nutritional info, honeycomb only has 115 calories per 1.33 cups - it tastes amazing and scores an "A" on CC!!
also, i find a lot of "healthy" cereals have a high calorie count. take for instance the new "grapenuts cereal" or "basic 4". You would think they are low in calorie count, but actally pretty high. Any suggestions?

Kashi Cinna Raisin Crunch! It's yummy, has lots of fiber, and low in fat. Plus, it has a lot of stuff, so you don' treally get sick of it. ^^
The best I have found is Fiber One by General Mills. It has no sugar
120 calories per cup and 28 grams of fiber. It is a "free food" with
Wieght Watchers and tastes very good.

The Kashi cereals in Canada and in the UK are different than those in the states, higher in calories and sugar. They are still good for you but I wouldn't recommend them unless you drive across the border to get some.
I suggest the following cereals:
Special K - (117 cals / 30g) Makes a good filler in combination with other more calorie rich cereals.. like granola
Weight Watchers Flakes and Fibre - (70 cals/ 30g) It also has 11 grams of fibre per 30g and very low in sugar.
Multigrain Cheerios - (120cals / 30g) I just like cheerios, makes a great snack by itself.
All-Bran Honey Nut - (80cals / 30g) This is a great cereal, I eat it all the time with strawberries. It has 5 grams of fibre per 30g.
PC Organics Choco Bears - (110cals / 30g) If you like chocolate you can give yourself a 1/2 serving of these with some Special K or cheerios. Or just have some as a snack.
Keep in mind that there are BIG differences when it comes to cereals sold in Canada and those in the States. For some reason the nutritional values vary greatly when it comes to dry foods like cereals and stuff.
