Breakfast foods for the fast and furious

Quote  |  Reply

HELP! I am new to this site and I need support from all of you guys. My biggest dilemna (okay one of my biggest dilemas) is breakfast.

I hate traditional breakfast food....cereal....eggs (which need to be combined with toast and sausage) fruit.....IN ADDITION....I usually eat ON THE RUN>

Which means that me and Ronald MC are great friends. UGH! Cuz I have a 13 year old that likes breakfast there. Please dont suggest getting up earlier to fix something, cuz I am NOT a morning person but this is the most important meal of the day.

Any suggestions from you guys as to what to have for a grab and run...I am good with sliced ham and cheese....bologna sandwich...etc....yogurt at my desk...etc. But I wake up with a need for protein and food! You know what I am saying?

HELP!

Try premaking things then putting them into the freezer for a quick take with you food. i do this with my 12yr old because he is not a breakfast eater either. That way at least you  are eating something healthy out of your own kitchen which is always lower is calories and processed ingredients.

Great thanks for the suggestion. Do you have any food items you can share with me thatyou prepare ahead....I sure could use the help in making breakfast my strongest and most important meal

Thanks....

If you are going to McDonalds, just get either a sausage burrito or a egg mcmuffin  (not a whole value meal with the hash brown.) I think both of those items are 300 calories, and even while they aren't super nutritional, you can make up for it the rest of the day...

May I just say I am horrified you take your 13 yo to McDonalds on a regular basis. I was only ever taken there as a treat, and therefore developed a healthy hatred for all such fast food places. Please don't compromise the health of your daughter like this!

Your right.....it is not on a regular basis however....thankfully but it is often. So...help me out...give me some solutions that are NOT pork sausage and biscuits...or sugary cereal....AND....did i mention that I am  a single mom so there is no one else to help prepare the food. My son does have cereal and milk.....but like I said...I need to focus more on this meal.

Thanks....as of today the trips are limited.

English muffins. You just pop em in the toaster. It takes 3 minutes. Spread em with some jam. I get mine in cinnamon raisin flavor. Love it. That + an apple + coffee = my breakfast every morning.
Ah! Ok then! Sorry it sounded from your original post that it was every day!! I was just horrified at the thought of that 7 days a week lol.

What about making sandwiches on whole wheat bread the night before with ham or low fat cheese in? And toast is quick? There is no reason you should eat breakfast foods at breakfast, that is just an institution. So basically anything you enjoy eating during the day that is low fat is good! What sort of cal count are you wanting for breakfast?
If you find you can't avoid going to McDonald's, their yogurt parfaits are fairly healthy as a breakfast choice.
On your mark...
get set....
** BANG **

Before finishing getting ready run into kitchen, grab South Beach Southwestern breakfast wrap from freezer in celophane sleeve, toss in microwave for 2 minutes and return to getting ready.

All ready, return to micro to grab slightly cooled wrap (still in wrapper) and head out door.

you can rip top of celophane sleeve and eat from wrapper.  This is not your average wrap - the tortilla gets amazingly soft and stretchy like the old fashioned eggroll wraps were inside.

Amazing taste and 200 calories but super filling.
i agree with making a ham and cheese sandwich the night before...it actually a great breakfast!!!! whole grain bread = complex carbs, ham + cheese = protein. try for low sodium ham and low fat or fat free cheese. also light english muffins are a great idea! and whole grain toast. kashi crunchy granola bars are great too!!!! and south beach high protein cereal bars. i know you said you dont like cereal but they arent really cereal-like, just crunchy.

Jimmy Dean "D Lights".  A nice, somewhat healthy alternative to an "egg mcmuffin" low fat, made with whole grain english muffins, egg whites, cheese and lean ham. ( You can microwave them, although they taste better if you toast the muffin and micro the rest, but it sounds like you may not have time for that)  Pretty tasty, personally I take the ham off, just because I don't usually eat ham.

Cals-250

Protein- 15

They should be in your freezer section at any local store.  They are a bit pricey, but sometimes you can find a coupon for them.

Oh yeah and they also make an egg (egg whites)cheese and sausage (turkey sausage) Although I have not personally tried I have heard tastes just like the egg mcmuffins with sausage but much more nutritious.

Taken from the jimmy dean site

Cal - 280

protein - 18g

Oh and here is an article you may find interesting

Take care.

You could make ahead eggs or pancakes, then freeze then or put them in the fridge overnight and pop them in the mocrowave in the morning. Use only eggwhites, or omit some off the yolk. For pancakes or waffles, pick a wheat or whole grain mix, or if you amke them from scratch, use whole wheat flour and add healthy omega 3's like flaxseed.

Or, you could buy frozen waffles or pancakes, but make sure there actually made with whole grains (Check the ingredients on the box) And for toppins, you could pre-chop some fruit or use sugar free fruit preserves for a low calorie option.

A really quick suggestion would be meal replacement bars, or something like a Luna bar paired with fruit and/or a a lowfat yogurt.

Besides those, theres always instant oatmeal. It takes probebly around 5 minutes with prep time to make.. opening the packedge and such, haha.

Goodluck!
how about the weightwatchers plain bagels for 150 calories w/ ff cream cheese and a coffee with skim milk? its fast and easy.

You mentioned that you do not like eggs, but what about an omelet...that can be made in about 2 minutes?

 Omelet in a Mug

1. Throw 2 eggs, lightly beaten, and any chopped veggies/breakfast sausage/spices plus salt and pepper to taste in a mug

2. Microwave, uncovered, on high for 1 minute; stir.  Cook about 1 minute more or until eggs are set.

Makes one serving

Thanks everyone....I will get out to the store today and start stocking up on what you recommended and I have a feeling that my 2008 will start out on a better food note for me and my son.

You are a great group of people. I truly appreciate your help!

Here's one I didn't see yet....smoothies! I used to be one of those who would skip breakfast for the extra few minuets of sleep I could get in the a.m. ~ then I got a blender!

Soy or Whey protein powder is fairly low cal {the one I use is about 150 cal/serving}, high in protein (duh!) and low in carbs.  Add in some unsweetened frozen fruit and some water so it doesn't get too thick and you've got breakfast in under 5 mins!
