Breakfast help?

Quote  |  Reply

I have pretty much never eaten breakfast, except when I was a kid and my mom made me - and then it was really bad, fatty, sweet things like donuts, honey buns, and cinnamon rolls.  (Because that is what she likes)  To this day I can't stand anything sweet for breakfast - I can't even stomach milk, cereal, fruit or yogurt - it is too sweet.  Something about the sweetness in the morning makes me want to throw up.  Since I have been an adult I never eat breakfast at all... except occasionally on the weekends I will have a breakfast taco or go to IHOP for bacon and eggs, hashbrowns, and such.  I know that's not healthy, though.

However, I understand it is important for weight loss and overall health and metabolism to have a good breakfast.  Any tips for a "first time" breakfast eater :)?  Like everyone, I don't have time in the morning to fix a breakfast, so I prefer to have things I can fix ahead of time and grab and go.  It just seems like most of the suggestions I have seen on here involved a lot of things on my "too sweet" list, but things that I do like (meats, veggies, eggs, wheat bread, etc.) take too long in prep time and/or are unhealthy.

Thanks!

 Shannon

If you're the sandwich type, just make yourself a turkey sandwich on wheat bread with lettuce, tomato, and any other veggies you like the night before so you can just grab it in the morning.  Maybe a V8 (low sodium, if you can) or other veggie juice as a side.  You could also make an omelet (with egg substitute, or only egg whites if you're worried about cholesterol) the night before, and microwave it in the morning.  Not as good as fresh, but convenience makes us sacrafice things sometimes.  :P

Good luck!

Thanks, Abbie!  The only problem is, that is pretty much what I eat for lunch, but I guess it wouldn't kill me... I am pretty good at making different types of sandwiches ahead of time and keeping them in the fridge or freezer for lunch.  Never thought about eating a sandwich for breakfast, but it makes sense.  :)  I do drink a lot of V8 as well as V8 Fusion.  The make-ahead omelet is a good idea, I will try that.
ooh! i can attest to the make-ahead omelet thing. i just chop up all sorts of veggies, throw them in a tupperwear container along with 3 egg whites and an egg, and take it to work (i work at a coffee shop and definately don't have time to do Anything at 5 am except function!). pop it in the microwave for 2 1/2 minutes (taking out once or twice to mix up) and you're good to go. Also, i'm a big toast with peanut butter fan- not too sweet and healthy!you could make some zucchini bread and keep that on hand for mornings. regular plain instant oatmeal. i'll try to think of some more. i'm excited about this thread because i, too, have a problem with thinking most things are too sweet (especially in the morning! but in general as well).
Dannon light yogurt- 60 calories (any Flavor)

$ large strawberries diced

Kashi go lean creal sprinkled on top
Oops I meant 8 large strawberries or sometimes I use blueberries.

One of my favorite breakfasts is spinach hummus on toasted english muffins (Thomas' light multigrain EM) with sliced tomato on top ... and a sprinkle of Mrs. Dash. YUMMILICIOUS!

My DH likes chicken-cheese quesadillas for breakfast.... I am sure you could come up with a healthy version.

Evidently timbergrove didn't read my post... ;)

Or a quick grilled cheese - or even better, put it on a whole-grain tortilla (quesadilla, I guess!)  You could also try some nuts, or trail mix (although trail mix might be too sweet.)
Maybe just a piece of toast. It is a good thing you don't crave the sweet stuff! What about the sour fruits like grapefruit or sour cherries? Egg white omletes with veggies,a breakfast burrito,or fix yourself brunch items and eat your breakfast as your lunch. Can you handle sweet things later in the day?

LOL abbie85 -- that is *exactly* what I had for breakfast today!  Turkey on my homemade wheat bread with a little spicy light mayo and a low sodium v8.  Breakfast of champions Tongue out

Shannon, the first thing you've got to do is stop associating certain foods as being "breakfast food" or "dinner food", etc.  Food is food.  My breakfasts range from a banana with natural peanut butter, an egg beater burrito with onions and mushrooms and salsa, apples (sometimes with that natural peanut butter again), homemade wheat bread with a touch of non-hydrogenated margarine and an over medium egg on top to salads, soups, and even leftovers from last night's supper.

Food is food.  Breaking a fast is breaking a fast no matter what food does it.  If you feel like a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, have one.  If you'd prefer last night's leftover salmon... it's okay.   I've even been known to have one of those "breakfast" egg-beaters burritos for supper -- and my kids think they're great too.  (I'm trying to not raise my kids with the same food associations that I grew up with -- my mom still refuses to make a stew in the summer time or a BLT in the winter)

Oh, and those burritos?... they make up really well the night before -- just wrap them in some wax paper and nuke em in the morning for a quick grab and go. Wink

Good luck!!

Try ¼ cup eggbeaters, 3 ounces of snow peas, 3 ounces of chicken breast. All these can be prepped the day before (even days before). Non stick fry pan, Pam... 0 cals version, make an omelet adding some green onions / bell peppers to taste. When the omelet is finished, (approx. 2 mins), combine the snow peas and pre-cooked chicken breast... should take another 2 mins. If you do not have the 4-5 mins to cook this, then just get up a few minutes earlier. This totals a solid A rating for food... almost 0 fat.

Vary the vegetable from time to time, and even the chicken breast can be substituted with pre-cooked steak... etc., al.

The whole needs to be organized and prepped a few days in advance to be able to fix a nourishing breakfast as noted above.

There are absolutely no tricks, no salt, just add some white pepper or similar for spice. Its easy to eat right, if you really want to. Though at times we can be our own worst enemy, just do not let yourself sabotage YOU! Its your choice to eat healthy... including a breakfast that can take only minutes to cook... and enjoy!

And... there is absolutely noting sweet here...!

I'm with you on the "too sweet" thing. Frankly I'd rather have lunch or dinner for breakfast, but it's like you said, there is a big "time" factor here.

You could try boiling eggs the night before and have a hard boiled egg with salt/pepper sprinkled on it (that's a REAL FAST grab n go if you are in a hurry).

Someone else mentioned V8 (I LOVE this drink - I take hot n spicy).

I noticed you said you like bread, you could do a NUMBER of things with a small slice of a whole grain/whole wheat bagel, piece of toast, or english muffin:

Slice by itself

Or with any variety of the following ingredients: a slice of cheese, lettuce,  a slice of tomato (sprinkled with salt/pepper mmm-mmm), and an egg, or some other sort of protein like a little bit of bacon (if you want to indulge), or turkey. Or you can sprinkle some bacon topping (just to get that bacon-y flavor), on it.

I LOVE bagel sandwiches.

I also like to do a "dry" huevos ranchero: I take a tortilla (corn), fry it up in a pan sprayed with Pam, sprinkle salt/pepper, put it on a plate, fry an egg up, sprinkle with salt/pepper put the egg on the tortilla, cover it with a tablespoon of green tomatillo salsa. It's SO GOOD. I may do that right now...

If you are indulging in bacon, here is a tip: you can actually MICROWAVE bacon till it's cooked, you just have to really press it between LOTS of paper towels to get all the fat you can off of it. When I cook mine in the oven, I still press it between paper towels and put some in a zip lock bag and put it in the fridge for later (salad toppings, sandwiches, breakfast later, etc.). I really only do that if I'm indulging and have plenty of calorie count room leftover.
