Breakfast: Is it really that important?
I've heard that eating breakfast everyday can help you lose weight. However, most thin people I know skip breakfast. I always eat breakfast and I'm still fat! So, how true is this? Could it be possible that this may be some marketing ploy that the cereal companies are coming up with?
Reason: 11/14/08: Stickied for a few days; 12/8/08: Unstickied
I have heard that, true, you don't have to eat breakfast every morning. But if you are trying to lose weight, it's a must! Just my thoughts.
Just like me, I take out trash in our apartment building in the mornings that I don't have to work. I do have to do that on an empty stomach, because I'm afraid if I don't, I will have extra work to do, like cleaning up my own puke. But afterwards, I do eat.
Sorry, that maybe was kinda gross up there. I didn't meant for it to be. I'm just saying....what I do.

Now we all know that eating breakfast is not what makes us fat ...........nor does skipping breakfast make us skinny! I just need to get the big picture down pat and I feel like I am on my way. I do find myself laughing (at myself )as I work to get in my 1200 calories................duh how did I do it to get overweight. No problem then. I think, for me, it is difficult to write down "five small Snickers bar" but it was darn easy to eat them. Oh well, that's life
i eat when im hungry
if you're not hungry, then you're body is not asking for you to eat breakfast
(remember there is a difference between being not full and hungry)
and if you eat breakfast, stock up on fibres and proteins
they keep you full for longer
I don't get hungry at breakfast time, but I started eating a bit. It works for me to have some green tea and two strawberries... just something to get the metabolism chugging along.
I don't eat breakfast, I just drink coffee and than I have big lunch at 12.00 h. I am thin, 112 lbs, but I think the key is not in the calories eaten in breakfast only, but calories eaten the whole day.
Also it is important to eat carbs in the first half of the day and to have mailny protein in the second half of the day.
I don't think cereal is a good breakfast, it is better to buy plain oat meal instead of any cereal brand (that may have hidden sugars and who knows what else). I like oat meal with yogurt and some raisins - this is a perfect breakfast, because the small amount of raisins will give you instant energy, the yougurt will give you proteins and the oat meal gives you slow energy that will gradually release til the lunch time.
Than for lunch you can have a big steak and a big fresh salad.
For a snack have a fruit - apple or banana.
For dinner have again a big steak with a salad.
This seems to work good for me.
I think the thing that deters some people from breakfast is the idea that breakfast has to be cereal, or something that is deemed a breakfast food. My husband thinks I'm crazy sometimes when he sees me eating a vegan taco or burrito for breakfast or a bell pepper stir fry.
I did some research not so long ago, and Dr. Kellogg (ie Kellog's cornflakes) was given a scholarship to go to a university to study nutrition, and he believed that the breakfast's of the 1800s were detremental to people's health. Thus, he was inspired to make healthy concoctions. Thus, the first cereals were born: grape nuts and corn flakes. Granted, compared to heavily greasey breakfasts of the 1800s, his inventions were much healthier.
But, for me, pinto beans in a soft tortilla, or a vegetarian taco, or vegetables & rice in a tablespoon of olive oil is much more fulfilling and nutritious. And, I find that when I eat these breakfasts, I eat less added sugar with breakfast. It's liberating to know I don't "have" to eat oatmeal, cream of wheat, cold cereal every single morning if I don't want to. I really like cream of wheat and oatmeal, but I don't make myself eat something my body really doesn't feel up to eating.

Definitely agree with this, there are no rules about what we have to eat at breakfast time. I love heated up leftovers or soup, or beans on toast, especially in winter when its freezing and you're in a cold house about to go to work. Cereal or a cold smoothie is the least appetising thing I can think of in those situations
Historically, I hardly ever ate breakfast. As a non-breakfast-eater, I got as high as 340 lbs. So no in my case skipping brekfast did not make me thinner.
When I made a commitment to improve my body and my health this year, having a healthy breakfast was part of that. I am more conscious of what I eat, of when and what I need to eat to prevent myself from feeling famished and ending up making bad choices. It's been a part of a whole lifestyle change. I can't imagine NOT eating breakfast now, especially since I bike to work and need to eat something after...and I am down to 248 lbs so I must be onto something here eh. Also I just feel better, healthier, stronger when I have a balanced day and that includes breakfast. With a banana and some oatmeal in my belly, I feel ready to take on the world!
I <3 Breakfast. I don't get as snacky all day long when I eat in the mornings.
I think it all depends on what you eat for breakfast, whether overeat the rest of the day, and a number of other factors.
I've been a breakfaster and a non breakfaster at various periods. If I ate a big bowl of corn flakes or a bagel or a pastry of some kind every morning, I'd be big as a house because I feel so unsatisfied and hungry when I eat those things, so then I snack all day and eat a lot of calories. Refined cereal and refined bread products just make me hungrier.
If however, I eat two eggs scrambled with some smoked salmon, and a really generous cup of mixed veggies to add big volume, I'll feel much better and can easily go until lunchtime.
I've also gone through periods where I just wasn't hungry in the morning and started eating at midday instead. As long as I planned my diet, I did just fine and in fact it seemed easy to keep the cals down. So, I dunno. I think the argument can be made either way, based on your tendancy to snack and crave later in the day, and your overall calorie consumption.
i get up and go straight to the gym in the morning and do my half hour on the treadmill. i am not hungry at all until an hour later. then i have 2-3 cups of coffee with 1/2 cup 2% milk in them. my metabolism is plenty cranked up after a good sweat first thing in the morning.
its not much of a breakfast but i get by.
It does. Because if you have a good breakfast you will have energy and you won't be really hungry when it comes to lunch. If your fat when you eat breakfast then watch what breakfast you eat. Always eat wholegrain ones like cheerios, weetbix, all bran, sultana bran. If they taste boring add some fruit! :)
hello
I heard somewhere on a forum (which could be wrong =P) that any calorie you put into your mouth after a fast or sleep (overnight) starts using new energy to burn, so it gets ur body going. Whoever posted it was saying that even coffee with creamer or tea with sugar gets your body going if you can't eat breakfast.
I dunno though, just thought i'd put that here and see what yall thought...
In addition eating in the am gets your metabolism kicking, and will help any weightloss plan.
Joe
I've been told the same thing Joe was told.
I'm trying to do as much as I can with help from my neighbor lady, walking with me up and down our hilly neighborhood, at least 30 minutes to a hour every day, twice a day sometimes.
I'm losing some weight, but of course not fast enough. I just started, Nov. 9th.
My husband had a heart transplant in April. We live Reno, Nv. transplant was at Stanford. We were in Calif. for 6 months, I gained 30 lbs. Friends & family said it was caused by stress, which caused my metabolism to change. Is this possible?
