Is breakfast supposed to make you fuller longer or hungrier sooner?

Quote  |  Reply

I had been being bad about breakfast and recently began reintroducing it daily. Aaannd now I'm more hungry than ever. I feel that this is getting out of control and I seem so easily willing to indulge post-lunch. I feel out of control over my hunger WHEN I EAT BREAKFAST. What is that about? breakfast, for example, a bagel with light cream cheese and coffee or oats and yogurt with coffee.

the oats with yogurt and coffee would be a better choice since you have whole grains and then protein from the yogurt. try a tbsp of peanut butter in the oatmeal as well and maybe a glass of milk.

I find that if i only eat carbs for breakfast then i am starving and your choices are not as balanced as they could be. the bagel is broken down quite quickly unless it's whole grain and there isn't much protein with that choice.

Here are some idea:

2 hard boiled eggs, 1 slice toast with 1 tbsp peanut butter, coffee with 1/4 cup milk ~400

oatmeal, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1 yogurt and a banana ~450

2 ww waffles, 1 cup berries, 2 tbsp syrup, 2 scrambled eggs with veggie and 1 tsp olive oil ~400-450

1 small potato with 1/2 cup chopped onion, bell pepper, veggies...cooked in 1 tsp olive oil, with 2 eggs and a slice of toast and 1 tsp margarine/butter ~400

1 cup ww cereal, 1 cup yogurt, 1 cup milk, 1 fruit ~400

**hope this helps!! :)

the oats are the high protein kashi ones with fiber, and the yogurt is activia light; if i have too much fat in the morning i have to go to the potty in  bad way.

if i do have a bagel, its a high protein multigrain one and i thought the cream cheese would help it "stick to my ribs."

I'm the same way. If I eat breakfast all I can think about all day is food and I end up eating a ridiculous amount of it. If I wait until around 10 I'll have something small and then have a big lunch and a smaller dinner, which keeps me in my calorie limits. I love breakfast, though, so it's annoying to feel like I can't eat it without wanting to eat everything in sight during the day!

are you still on a weight gain diet? why light cream cheese if you are, and i thought you'd be glad about appetite. you were saying recently how it was quite poor - your appetite

This happened to me when I first started eating breakfast, and I have heard it a lot on this website from other people. Trust me when I say it is a GOOD thing. That hunger you are feeling means that your metabolism is up and running and using up "fuel" so to speak, like it is supposed to. That is pretty much the whole point of eating breakfast in the first place.

no fidget i'm on maintenance. i really was just curious because everything has always said "breakfast keeps you fuller longer" (meaning i can focus on my tasks or classes without thinking about food?) and it definitely doesn't. it's good to know the effect is positive, though!

BSH-what is ur maintenance amount? maybe too low?

It's 2,100-2,500 range. I know that I've written about no appetite, I don't know if the fact that I've gone off of birth control, gotten a breast infection and am now on antibiotics has anything to do with this, but I just don't have consistent appetite. Anyway, The breakfast thing relates back to the fact that everything says with breakfast you're not tempted, and I've been near bingeing lately and that is very triggering as many of you know.

i THINK that ur still extremely active, rt? it could be that ur maintenace is more like 2500 and up, not 2500 as the top.

also, do u work or do u stay home w ur kids? maybe since i rush off to work after bfast i dont have time to overeat whereas after work, i do!

I "stay home" with my kids technically, but typical day is: wake up 5:35, running at 5:45, get showered, get the kids up, get them a bath, get them fed, do morning cleaning or laundry, get to preschool by 9am, run errands, drive home with my toddler so I can do school work or cleaning or more errands, back to pick her up at 12, get home, feed them lunch, they need to go potty and get changed, they want snack, make sure all items are put away, feed myself, play time and reading time til nap, then schoolwork til my husband gets home, chill with hubby for 30 or so before i have to get them up, get them fed, etc., and sometimes bathroom cleaning at night.

I used to want to eat non stop after work - Oats and Honey granola bars with PB!

my only guess is its bc ur mostly home, id probly do the same

I have this problem too. When I eat breakfast at say, 8am, I am always really hungry by 11am. However, if I don't have anything for breakfast i'm not hungry until 1 or 2pm. I guess it's all about metabolism :)

so go potty when you have to?  i agree that you could use some fat in your bfast.  the fact that you're hungry is probably just a sign that your metabolism is kicking on.  the binge issue is probably just related to a pattern of response that you've learned to your own hunger cues.  given your history of under-eating and the fact that remain very active, i think you should follow your hunger cues.  maybe this means to just PLAN on having another snack an hour or two after your breakfast.  learning how to live with your hunger cues is going to be a much better skill than learning how to turn them off.

I find if I eat breakfast, no matter how filling it trigger me to eat a LOT more calories. like almost double.  I usually drink something with energy in it, or a protein shake (something liquid with calories to get my metabolism going) and wait until like 11.  I have 2 small lunches at 11 and then 3, and two small dinners (hopefully small lol, I try) at 6 and between 9 and 11.  Im new o this but after research Ive been trying that. its hard to stick to and keep meals small but I hope it works! oh also I found if i am hungry I have some plain yogurt and it kill my appetite, bitter foods are supposed to be good for you.

there is some fat there - but the kind of potty to which i'm referring is the kind of potty for which i don't have time when i'm say, dropping my daughter off at preschool. having a really fatty breakfast negatively activates my digestion.

I have to be perfectly honest here i dont think your bmi is high enough isnt it about 18 ?. you are doing alot of exercise to . if you havnt been eating breakfast then you have been restricting , your body is hungry and its reaping on the fact you are feeding it . i hope you dont think im getting at you because i arnt , i just care, but i think none of your problems lack of period hunger everything is going to be better until you are a healthy weight bmi 20 plus h x

no my bmi is higher than that now, i'm just... not as comfortable talking about it. it's about 19-20

I feel the same. When/ if I eat breakfast early it sparks of my hunger signals for the whole day - whether I eat a little or alot. My mind just starts thinking about food all the time and I can feel hunger pains etc sooner. I have found that if I wait until lunchtime to eat and just have a tea in the morning, for the whole morning period I barely think about food. Its awfully annoying as its a bad habit to get into.

Eating breakfast triggers digestion and increases your metabolism, which is why you are hungrier sooner after eating it than if you skip it altogether.

People who eat breakfast are more likely to maintain a healthy weight.  A healthy breakfast should contain some protein (eggs, low-fat dairy, protein shakes) and some fiber (whole grains, vegetables, fruits), which should satisfy your hunger and will keep you feeling full until lunch time.

The trick is to mix and match foods...an apple with 1-2 tbsp PB, 1 piece whole wheat toast with 1 boiled egg, 3 egg-white omelet with reduced-fat cheese, tomatoes and spinach...

Stay away from the sugary cereals, syrups, pastries, and white breads because they are digested quickly and will leave you hungry and tired in a couple of hours.
