before breakfast workout
I recently heard that doing cardio before you've had anything to eat for the day makes you burn more fat. I find it very difficult to work out when I haven't eaten yet, I tend to get nauseous and dizzy. But I was wondering if there was any truth to this, and if so is the amount of fat burned really much different than the amount burned if you had eaten before your workout?
No.
lol I like your answer. Short and to the point.
I don't have the answer to your question, but I will say that if you feel this way in the morning then not eating is going to work against you much more than it will work for you! If you feel this way, your workouts will be much less effective and you will be less motivated.
Ok, the longer answer it is a personal preference and depends on your work out. Some people feel slugish and can't do the workout, others are opposite. Personally I have a small breakfast, 200-250Cal. Anything more and I feel really slugish on my ride and can't push as hard, if I don't eat anything I am starving half way through the ride, and energy bars etc just don't do it. I need a "real" breakfast.

The recommendation I hear most is to eat a small protein/carb snack 30minutes to 1 hour before a workout (banana and nuts for me), and another post workout (to speed recovery).
The big thing though: you don't burn more calories on an empty stomach, you just feel worse burning the same amount. The rumor comes from the idea that if there is no food in your stomach, you HAVE to burn fat. But here on CC, we know better (right?), it's not about what is in your stomach this second, but calories in vs. calories out, and being hungry when you workout doesn't change that.
I workout 6days a week, i've been doing this for going on 4years now, what i've found is that pre-workout i need a small amout of complex carbohydrates ( half cup cereal/ bannana/ an orange/ serving oatmeal) but post workout I'm going to eat at least 400cal with about a third to one half being Protein. I found that by Increasing the amount of protein post-workout i reduce the amount of muscle fatigue i get ( i'm not as muscle sore the next day)

This means your blood sugar is likely too low! I suffer from this first thing in the morning too. Feed your body (and feed it regularly) and it will do a better job feeding your workouts. Enjoy that breakfast first. :)

That was my thinking. I heard this from a female fitness competitor who comes into my work (I work at the cafe of a health club). When she said it I was like "wow, I could never never do that I'd pass out"

lol, I almost want to show this to that chick that told me about this. Almost. I still need her to like me so when I'm waitressing her food down by the pool she'll give me tips. And she's also totally awesome looking so...coming from me it would seem kind of stupid.

There is kind of some truth to it. Assuming you work out just as hard without having breakfast as you would if you did have breakfast then you will probably burn more fat during your workout if you don't eat breakfast beforehand.
The reason people recommend working out before breakfast is because they're only considering the amount of fat burned during the workout and are ignoring the other 23.5 hours in the day. If you burn a little more fat during your workout, then your body will burn a little less fat for the rest of the day and everything will even out eventually.
