Breast feeding and calories, how many?

Quote  |  Reply

If you are breast feeding, how many more calories do you recommend adding to what calorie count recommends?  I am really struggling with my weight loss and getting slightly discouraged.  I am sticking to about 16-1700 calories and I am afraid to go any lower.  Please help!

plug in your pre-pregnancy info for the calorie calculator, and then add about 200-300 cals to that. That's what my doc suggested for me. Regardless, I wouldn't go lower than 1700 just because your milk production will suffer.

don't forget to keep a good protein ratio in your diet.. milk is made up of mostly protein so if your diet is lacking, so will your milk.

Keeping it at about 1700 cals is ideal, especially if it is about 300 cals above maintenance weight.  I generally ate what I wanted, without counting (and I suspect I ate way over 2500 cals per day since I often overate) but I still maintained for the last 6 months...

P.S.  As a general info tid bit - if your milk production is low, look into fenugreek - it does wonders!

P.P.S. V-Avila - cow's milk is mostly protein, human milk is actually not :)
