Breast feeding and trying to lose weight

Quote  |  Reply

Hi all,

I am new to this forum and I just need help.  I am miserable with my weight.  I had a baby 3 months ago and I am exclusivly breastfeeding her.  My problem is that I  am always starving.  I need some good food choices that will keep me full alot longer.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Kelly

well its perfect timing to start because in a month or so you lil one will begin solids and slowly but surely will be less dependent on you.  because you are sustaining life you need to figure how many calories you as a lactating mother should consume. if you consuming more than needed then its a matter of shrinking your stomach back down , after a few weeks of eating the reccomended calories you will stop being so hungry. becareful about going under any reccomended calorie guide lines, remember your baby is what you eat so by no means should you even consider dropping drastic weight while lactating, my personal opinion is to find your reccomended calories, learn to count calories and start working out and ask your obgyn they have great tips for dieting... i mean there doctors ;).

you may have a vitamin defficiency if you crave a certain type of food, lactating mothers have alot of strain on there system make sure your getting enough vitamins and liquids. but if your hungry just because your hungry i find chicken broth to be filling, apples, also a good general regimen for eating, 3 meals 2 snacks a day will curb your appetite.. oh and one other way to help is to chew gum.. it saves me on days when im too busy to eat.

hope this helps

Hi Kelly.  I was in your boat several months ago.  I found it very hard to lose while nursing..in fact I gained most of my pregnancy weight back... I ate all the time lots of junk food.  it was what i craved I quit nursing when my girl was 2  so far Ive lost 30+lbs and found foods that have lots of fiber  I have a hard time with bread but I found wraps that have 8 grams of fiber a peice good to stuff meat and veges in  dont go to low in your cals you want good quality milk for the baby.  lots of water too.  I couldnt have fake sugar it gave Robyn gas really bad.  Just up your fiber.. its nice to see a mom who is nursing full time  I loved it. and the weight gain was totally worth it to me but glad to be getting my shape back now...

wow,  thanks for such quick help.  I think that the chicken broth sounds like a good idea for me since i am always graving salty snacks.  that is a great tip.  thanks.

getfitgirl:  thanks for the compliment.  i too love nursing my daughter, i just want to be healthy for her too, and my 2 boys.  i also have gained since i had her instead of lost, but again, it is so worth it.  i just want to slowly lose weight so that i dont jeopordize my milk supply.

thanks for the help ladies, and i look forward to frequenting this board more.

I'm also nursing and losing weight! I've lost 5 pounds counting calories and watching what I eat. I eat no less than 1800 calories,  which is minimum while nursing, but usually around 1900 sometimes more. Nursing allows for about a 500 calorie burn so you have to manually add that into your daily activities on here. If you need more info check my journal for resources or contact me.

Hi! I'm new too and breastfeeding as well.  My daughter is 7 weeks old.

I find that a handful of nuts, pb on wheat,  hummus with wheat pita and carrots, a banana with cereal,  are great snacks in between meals.  High fiber and healthy fat keeps you full longer.

Also, make sure you get lots of water.  Sometimes when you think you're hungry, it's actually thirst, and you'll feel better right away after a glass of water or a cup of tea.

That's all I can think of right now.

I'm excited to meet other moms on here.  Good luck everyone!

Suzanne
