Breast Lump that Comes and Goes

Quote  |  Reply

Every morning for the past couple of weeks, I have noticed a small, circular, cystic-looking lump in my right breast, about 1 inch to the right of the nipple, seemingly atop a vein, relatively superficial but not within the layers of skin. Today, I looked again after my workout and it was there, seemingly firmer, and tender to the touch. Ever since touching it, my breast has been tender.

The thing is, it seems to dissipate drastically several hours after the workout.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

I am not a doctor and do not know what it could be as it comes and goes so doesn't sound like cancer but get it checked out by a doctor ASAP!!! My mother was 34 when she finally decided to get a lump checked out and she almost died from the stage 4 cancer that was diagnosed. From your pic I surmise you are young and have a long life ahead of you. Don't risk it. Do something about it.

Agree with madeline that you should see a doctor because it's one of those things that really needs an in-person examination.

Please don't postpone making a doctor's appointment, but to give you some perspective, tenderness/soreness is only rarely associated breast cancer.

The only kind of cancer where that is the case is inflammatory breast cancer and while it requires immediate, immediate attention, it is very rare and it really does feel inflamed. The women who have this type of breast cancer often describe how they thought they had bumped it or it was an insect bite but then it does not go away.

However, if I remember correctly, you have come off of birth control and are awaiting the return of a normal cycle? In which case, tenderness and lumps are common for women in the second half of the menstrual cycle (the two weeks before a period is set to arrive). And if you did not experience these symptoms prior to going on birth control, you cannot rule out that you develop them now.

There are also lymph nodes in the breast. Lymph nodes are part of the immune system and they can swell and become tender if you are fighting off an infection.

Either way, you will be thankful for seeing the doctor as soon as possible. Most likely you will have your concerns completely put to rest, but if the unlikely occurs and it needs attention, then you will be so thankful for having dealt with it early.

Thank you both. I am going in tomorrow at 9am!

How did it go? I hope everything went ok. I had something similar and it turned out to be a boil, it's long gone now, but it was a scary feeling.

How was your apt? My thoughts are with you and I hope everything is ok.

thank you all! it turned out to be my having fibrocystic breasts, perhaps as a result of having gone off of birth control and setting my hormones all in a whack. it's likely a duct still had a little milk in it from my breastfeeding days and it became infected and lumped up. We massaged it out, expelled milk, did a culture and a pregnancy test, and she put me on antibiotics to fight the infection!!!

LADIES - no matter what it is or how old you are, ALWAYS get lumps checked out!

Relieved to hear that things are fine! Thanks so much for letting us know the outcome!
