Breastfeeding?

Quote  |  Reply

So, I went to the doctors yesterday and forgot to ask my 1 and only question..and don't want to wait 2 weeks for opinions so I'm asking here!

I had a breast reduction just over a year ago, and was told it may affect my ability to breastfeed. The other day after a shower I noticed that I was leaking, so does that mean I can breastfeed? or is it just an annoying part of pregnancy I have to deal with for another 10 weeks lol.

Thanks in advance for any input :)

I breastfed my first child for just over a year with no milk supply issues what so ever and I was leaking colustrom as early as 5 months into my pregnancy. I would think that if your already leaking then everything is still working working the way it should. I havent had a breast reduction nor am I a doctor but that would be my guess. I hope it works out for you though.

ps- Congrats on the pregnancy :)

Hi,

I just went to my breastfeeding reference given to me by a lactation consultant called the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. It's a great easy to read book. I suggest you read it BEFORE giving birth so you won't run into all the problems I did.

In any case, the small section on breast surgery said basically that if most of your glands producing milk were left in tact you shouldn't have a problem. And sometimes even if they weren't they can heal and start to produce again. I'd say the fact that you're leaking is a great sign. The book advises that you just monitor the signs that your baby is receiving enough milk to be fully sure.

congrats on your pregnancy.

Thanks to both of you :)

I'm thinking that I should be able to, I'll have to write my question down so I remember to ask my doctor when I go next. I had trouble making enough milk for my daughter and ended up formula feeding, so hopefully I don't have that problem again!

I'm fairly certain you'll be able to breastfeed if you're leaking now.

Here's a website I never would have thought existed!

Breastfeeding After Breast and Nipple Surgeries

Thank you!

I would never even think to look for a site dedicated to that! haha
