brighton england
I was wondering if anyone knew what sorts of foods I would find in Brighton England. I am studying abroad there this summer.
Brighton, Sussex.... pearl of the South Coast.... fantastic little regency seaside town, shingle beach, pretty promenade, and home to the Royal Pavillion and a flourishing artistic and gay community!!! You'll find pretty much any kind of food you want. If you're planning to cook, British supermarkets stock an excellent range of fresh and packaged foods.... and local shops & markets can fill in the gaps. Brighton also has more than its fair share of health-food shops, ethnic (Indian subcontinent/Far East/Eastern Europe) grocers and vegetarian restaurants catering as it does to students and foreign visitors. Be sure to try out some traditional fish & chips and other seafood as they are going to be fresh as a daisy by the sea. Find a good gastro-pub and you can get really nice things to eat. There's a super little place in Brighton made famous on Gordon Ramsay's 'Kitchen Nightmares' called Momma Cherri's Soul Food Shack... (it was a turnaround success, I hasten to add) So if you're from the States (and the 'England' suffix is a dead giveaway
) and you're pining for some Southern American classics, that's always an option.
In the north lanes there are a ton of restaurants! I would recommend this place next to the library called Pizza express. They make salads and stuff too and in the front they have a fake lawn with deck chairs where you can eat!!!
I studied abroad in the UK for a year.. you can pretty much find anything you could in the US in big supermarkets. ASDA is the UK supermarket I went to all the time.
in my opinion, fish and chips are a nasty greasy oily mess.. and what the heck is up with mushy peas? yuck.
Also be careful if you eat meat when ordering it, they tend to serve it much more rare than they do in the US unless you specify otherwise. My first night in the UK I got food poisoning from eating lamb that was cooked too rare.
Can't really top Jane, but Calis, as you're gaining, REALLY use this as a chance to try new things and be brave. And contrary to Morgan (sorry!) fish and chips can be REALLY nice if you go to a good chippy. So are mushy peas! I love 'em!
I think you have to be weaned on mushy peas to truly appreciate them for the gastronomic delicacy that they are.
Brighton rock.
Mushy peas with salt, pepper & vinegar are DELICIOUS!
Being a yorkshire lass I like a mushy pea butty myself.
mushy peas looks like a fav.
what exactly is it? peas mashed up??
