Why Broccoli?! Why?!

Quote  |  Reply

I love broccoli! However, it's so many calories. I had some white rice and broccoli and the broccoli was more calories than the amount of rice I ate. Why is all the things I love so many calories? What are some low calorie veges I can eat at the dinner to fill what's left of my calories for the day? Any suggest would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

An entire huge stalk of broccoli has about 100 calories. That's over half a pound of broccoli. I don't know how much of it you ate, but you really have nothing at all to worry about. Broccoli is one of the densest, lowest-calorie foods you can think of.

Maybe I input the data wrong. I hope so, because I was a bit over after I input that.

Hmm maybe you did enter it wrong, broccoli is a pretty low cal vegetable.

Nope your right,

I used to have a stalk of broccoli instead of rice or pasta thinking it was better but I'd rather have the carbs as they are less or just a little more calories and they fill me up better.

Broccoli - whole stalk - 98 cals

White Rice - 60g - 84 cals

Spaggetti - 80g - 126 cals

You do realaise that an "entier stalk" isn't just a floret. It's about the size of your head. If that isn't enought for 100 cals you might wanna rethink your portain sizes.

An entire cup of cooked broccoli has around 50 calories.  I don't know how much you're eating if your getting more calories from broccoli than rice, but a cup of rice is around 200 calories.

Holy hell?! Then if that's the case, then I was certianly wrong with my counts. Thanks for clearing that up.

And that, dear friend, is why we weigh our portions.

hehehehehe! very very true :)

Or check out that little "280 g" serving size.

Two hundred and eighty grams. Really.

lol! This is a funny thread. When I saw the title I thought the OP hated brocoli, but then was surprised to see them state that brocoli was so high in calories. Its one of the best veggies you can have in terms of health benefits.

See: Health benefits of broccoli

That 280g serving size for a large stalk only comes to 98 kcal but 1 cup of cooked long grain rice is 205kcals (approx 158g). Can anyone actually eat one stalk of broccoli?

Eat more broccoli!

Guilty Embarassed

^ *easily*

I eat a whole pound of broccoli for 250 calories.

How wonderful it must be to find out that something you love and thought was high in calories is actually a really good choice.

I am sad that cookies are so high in calories. Anyone, anyone?

Yeah, it's too bad you can't do this with beer.

Never ever ever feel guilty about eating broccoli - if anything eat more of it!!! ha ha! Drizzle some extra virgin olive oil on and enjoy!!!

I'm all for a petition.  Someone should do something about the caloric state of cookies in this country!  We can transfer the extra to celery or brussel sprouts!

Even though I love rice, always go with the broccoli

More nutrients in the broccoli than in the rice.  Vegetables are going to be in the better category regardless of the calories in more ways than one.  Broccoli is one of those foods that are good and low in calories.

Raw and Steamed are the best ways to go and don't add anything to them.  It really doesn't need it.

I'll sign your petition :P

I remember a colleague gave me a belgian choc chip cookie. It tasted so good and I polished it off thinking maybe I'm indulging in something that is perhaps around 180-200 calories - which sort of fit in my daily calorie count, maybe a little over I thought. The packet didn't have any nutritional info so I looked it on the website of the supermarket it was from. It turns out that this particular one was around 400 kcals! Ouch! Not fair :(

I'd have to have have 4 large stalks of broccoli in order to match that. I'll leave you with this mental image, 1 cookie vs 4 stalks of broccoli!
