I broke the plateau..(FROM: Can someone start with a plateau??? )

Quote  |  Reply
I almost started with 230 lbs 3 weeks ago in CC. I am happy to mention that am now in 225 lbs..( i think its more of water weight..that is lost..) The thing..is...am in 225 for more than a week..

i've followed...everything possible( the ideas shared by other cc members..)...to break this plateau...

I've read many posts on people hitting a plateau..mainly nearing their goal or atleast after losing some reasonable amount..
I'm just worried...because...how come I start with a plateau..???

It really keeps me thinking...!

EDIT- title change

I think a lot of people hit plateaus near weights that their bodies were at for a while at some point.
But you may want to have your thyroid checked out, and see a nutritionalist.

I think that if you persist then as soon as your body realises and adapts to the new change - i bet you will suddenly see a huge change.  Each body works differently remember.  If you stick with what you are doing and its the right amount of calories, you will see a change shortly.  If it continues to stay the same then see your doctor but i'm pretty sure it will drop as soon as your body gets used to it....
Im at almost the same thing, started with a littel more wieght but seem to be stuck at 225 been there a week and 1/2, but in that time i have gained and lost. I normaly wiegh a 3 times a week (monday morning is my "legit" wiegh in) and i have been less then 1/2 a pound one way or another from 225 on the last two mondays. I'm not discouraged yet. But if its 2 weeks then 3 I may get worried. I dont think its going to happen overnight (and I'm sure you dont either).. there are going to be good days and bad. Keep at what you where doing and if in another few days it doesnt change then its time to try something else for a week (more  or less calories depending on what you do now.. Dont starve yourslef). I decided to bike, more excerise is my "change" hopefully this comming Monday I will be 224 or better! and I'm sure you will be too soon!
thanks everyone
Actually 5 lbs. in 3 weeks is really good!  More than 6 lbs. in 3 week is too fast to be healthy.  I does take time.  A 500 cal daily deficit is only a loss of 1 lb a week.  Losses tend to sudden.  I don't know about you but my scale is not sensitive enough to detect a 1/7 lb. weight loss.  If you've gone 3 weeks or more with no weight loss then you've hit a plateau.
How about post your stats (age, height, sex) how many calories you eat, what you do for exercise.. and so on.

Also did you switch to water or atleast start drinking 2.5 liters a day of it?

How stressed are you?

All this can play into the diet.   I have a good handle on it .. if you post your info I, or someone else, will surely point out if you are doing anything wrong.

As for weightloss.  When I weight myself through out the week I notice the change isn't there.   But one day a week it hits and shows up and i know things are still going.   It's kind of wierd.  It's sort of a cycle and it revolves around when I ate last the evening before and how much water i had before going to bed.
I'm 26, 5'5", Female..Currently 225 lbs

I have been overweight since my childhood.and..
fluctuating around 220 lbs for the past 10 years... :(

I went to 245 lbs (to the max) last year and was in Morbidly obese condition...( as per Dr's theory. Don't know what makes MO)
and after that..Due to new job, increased regular activity, shifting home, driving car for 3 hrs a day to work.. etc stuff.. lost 15 lbs in couple of months and stayed at 230 lbs..for around 6 months..

I have taken a list of endocrinal tests and no Thyroid..for me (as of now).
My family heredity shows a thyroid history (both hyper/hypo) though..

But, I have hyperinsulinemia (very minimal difference than normal) and anemia ( again, very minimal difference than normal) I'm taking these proper medications as per Doctor's advise..( started couple of weeks ago)

Diabeta - for hyperinsulinemia
Gefer - for iron..
Obelit - to aid weight loss by fewer percentage..

Talking about..Obelit...
I know there are lot of controversies/side effects over taking this medicine..
But am taking it..yet

==After joining CC ( approx a month ago)==

as per CC's tools, am supposed to take 2200 cals for maintaining and 1450 cals to lose 1.5 lbs a week.. ( with a 750 deficit..)

I eat with around 500 -700 deficit, ( taking in to account -> eating back the calories on work-out and calories lost over my diet pill (obelit)  )

I intake food portions at least 5-6 times a day..
Started drinking approx 2-2.5 liters of water a day
I work out 4 days a week at least..( burning minimum of 250-300 cals /day)
**Couple of years ago, I hurt my back doing treadmill with more inclination...and more speed, so I want to take this work-out slowly this time..

Hope this helps a little bit to advise me.

Thanks for your time people. I appreciate it..
You are taking a fair amount of medications that could have side effects regarding weight loss/gain.  Have you spoken with a doctor about possible effects they could have on your weight loss plan?
Yes, the doctor only prescribed these medicines in this combination.. I don't think they interfere with weight loss...(otherwise, Dr would have mentioned..I believe)

again, the diet pill is for.. that I can shed some pounds to reach at least 200 lbs first and then I can start increasing my exercise...to avoid higher heart rate/body pain..and stuff.. and I might stop taking it sooner..

and those other 2 medicines( very minimal amount of mg) , its just increasing iron and controlling insulin..in blood..and will stop taking it when my normal level reaches
It sounds like you are pretty informed as far as comunicating with your doctor. Keep consulting him/her and let them know what your goals are and how you would like to attain them. You are certainly on the right track. Remember, its a marathon, not a sprint. 5 pounds in 3 weeks is right where you want to be.

Good luck!
If you had issues with weight in the past and ended up yo-yo dieting, this could have affected your body in a negative way.

So now that you are trying to be healthy, and your body having been used to its current state, is going to resist the change.

So yes, I think it can be possible to "start" and be on a plateau.

Keep going at it in a healthy way and you will be better off.  Remember that if you are not losing actual pounds, you could be losing fat and you are getting overall healthier.
Thanks again for your inputs!
My body tends to lose a few pounds quickly and then do nothing for a week and a half, and then lose a few pounds quickly, etc.  It's been like that since Day 1 of my diet with C-C.  My weight loss graph is pretty interesting actually.  I'll lose a few pounds and then wait and watch while the trend line catches up.  Then (alarmingly) the trend line will start to curve up just before I lose a few pounds again.

So basically what I'm saying is, I started at 206 and almost immediately "plateaued" at 201.  Since you've just started dieting with CC, you'll want to give it a go for a couple more weeks... and then report back.  :D  Chances are your body is not actually plateauing, but just adjusting.
thanks for the support.. people

I broke my plateau..few days ago. :)

***as per other's suggestions:***
we need to change our exercise routine everyday...to make sure body doesn't get used to exercise and end up in plateau..
******

usually I work out on cross-ramp(elliptical), treadmill, cycling, some wieghts

I tried doing two of this each day for 60 mins ( say 30 mins treadmill and the next 30 mins crossramp) and changing the order..
it didn't help..for my body nature I guess.. It still didn't loose anything..for more than 2 weeks..

so, I followed the same concept with a change
that is,  (the reason I believe was this..)

I choose any 3 of these ( cross-ramp, treadmill, cycling , some wieghts) and did each for 10 mins../ or say until I burn some X # of cals I wish

for ex:

cross-ramp - 10 mins then
treadmill- till i burn 80 cals
cross-ramp-10 mins
cycling-till I burn 50 cals
crossramp- till I burn 100 cals
treadmill-10 mins

etc..until I reach 60 mins....

this helped my body confusing....what am doing next..

If I were to work cross-ramp 30 mins continuously, and then treadmill 30 mins together..etc
my body got used to the workout within few mins..of the start of the exercise..

I hope this helps anyone..

thanks
I don't think we need to change our exercise routine daily... but to change it up each week or two is a good plan.  I like doing something for a while then changing to something I don't normally do.   For example i stopped doing the treadmill at the gym and now do the stair-stepper.   It gives me a much better workout and I can see the calorie burn and my heartrate the whole time since it actively monitors me unlike the other cardio equipment at my gym.

I stopped walking and picked up the Learning to Run program on the exercise forum.  This has me changing each week to progressively longer runs and thus keeps my body from guessing what's really coming next.
nightc1: I totally agree with you.

But that's the only change I did and saw the weights going down..Thought I can share..

Sorry, if my opinion was wrong  :) Who knows, may be my body finished adjusting (at my plateaued state) for the previous weight loss..as per chrysbiz

Ok, I weighed 215 at first of year. I cut 500 calories out a day, sometimes more. Usually take in around 1600 calories a day. Eat a lot of veggies, (celery, carrots) during the day in between meals. Also been eating an apple or an orange. The 1600 is counting everything. Ok, I have this "cross country" skis thingy that I use for exercise, 30 minutes a day or at least 200 calories burned. Well, here it is the 10th of March and I seem to be at 196 to 197 for a week now. Try to add variety to my veggies at supper. Noticed that I have been taking in over 40 grams of carbs at supper the last week. I was not taking in as moany in the past weeks, so will try to cut back to less than 40 gms of carbs at supper. Think I will try to do this for a week to see if any more weight loss. Will report back. Thanks.
