Brown Rice.....Does this sound Right? Need Answer ASAP!

Quote  |  Reply

Sorry if this is in the wrong catagory. Right now I am cooking brown rice. On that back of the bag it says 100g = 130cals. Does this sound right? Im guessing thats for dry rice...not cooked. Also how many g's are in 1 cup of brown rice. I was trying to find out about brown rice, but it's telling me that it has a LOT more cals than that..... I need the help ASAP! Thanks.

From this website I get 218 cals per cup cooked/688 cals per cup dry (That's for generic, medium grained brown rice)

Yes, I got the same, but in my case, the back of the package says 100g = 130cals (dry). So Im looking for info on how many g's are in 1 cup dry brown rice. Thanks. I also think the cal's are really low....is the nutrition label ever wrong?

Usually, if nothing else, it should say that there are x number of cups total in the package, equivalent to y grams. From that, you should be able to figure out how many grams in a cup.

The nutrition label is sometimes rounded, but shouldn't be too far off.

Can you just measure it in a cup? I mean I would assume brown rice doesn't vary that much from place to place. There's no rule for how many grams are in a cup so I'm not sure. You could weigh a cup if you have a kitchen scale. There are about 28 grams to an ounce.

Those cals sound okay to my. I don't think the labls wrong. Unless you want to do some experimentation and math I would suggest you just assume that there are 218 calories in a cup of your rice when it is cooked and leave it at that.

Unfortunalty it doesn't tell me how many cups are in the bag :-( ...  The brand is: Mr. Goudas Natural Brown Rice 750g.
I'm sure you're fine...Unless you want measure out all the rice, cup by cup, just go with the estimate.
I don't have a kitchen scale yet. :-(

I looked at 10 different brands and types of brown rice. The absolute most calories I found was 218 for a cup cooked. Some varieties were as low as 150 a cup cooked. So no matter what you know that for every cup of cooked rice you eat, you will not possibly be consuming more than 218 cals (unless you slather it with butter).

Dont' worry so much!

Thanks everyone for the info. I did the cup measurment for the whole 750g bag and got 3.5 cups dry. So 214g = 1 cup dry brown rice. WOW! Thats low concidering it's 130cals per 100g. Thanks.

WOW! Taste REALLY bad!! Yuk...lol
I am SOOO not a brown rice fan. I have tried it a couple of times and its YUCK!!!!!!!!!! I dont like how its really chewy either. I'll stick to white rice thanks.

Did you try adding things with it?  I add chicken breast, or steak, tomatoes, carrots raw, cucumber, and yes sometimes avocado and can't forget my soy sauce.  I love it.  Some things take time to get use to, but your tastes will change as you start eating healthier!!!!

Thought I'd share a great site for measurement conversions.

Also, if you have a Walgreens in your area, I just got my scale there for $6.00

Alot of people cook brown rice wrong thats why it comes out chewy, it has to cook longer than white does. Here is my mom's surefire recipet

1c rice and 2c water, place and pan and bring to boil, once boiling turn down to simmer. It will need to cook about 45 minuted. Do not stir too often (about 15min) if your worried about it burning or sticking to the bottom its too high.

For flavor. You can replace 1c of water with any liquidy base (1c) here are some we use: 1c soup stock, 1c salsa, 1c veg juice. We will also add the fallowing dry items at times: lipton or nox veggie soup mix, diced veggies, seasonings, taco mix or various spices.

I love brown rice and try to find different way that ppl might like it.

I think the details given on the back of the pack are given as cooked.

I like brown rice tho', never had it before I started to get fit but I like the crunchiness of it! At least you know your not putting a load of bleach and crap into your system!

have to jump in, here.

once you bring it to a boil, reduce heat to low and cover.  do not stir at all.  it won't burn unless you have the heat too high.  cook until the water has all been absorbed: this can vary a lot according to the type of rice.

cooking in stock, with butter, seasoning, etc. is fine, but you are adding sodium, calories & fat when you do that; nutritional information given assumes that you cook only in water, so you're not adding anything.

i prefer wild rice to brown.  i find brown rice bland and disappointing.
If you don't like the taste of brown rice, try cooking it with chicken stock instead of water. Make a pilaf-type thing instead of boiling the heck out of it. I don't really like 'fresh' brown rice because it's an acquired taste - we use Instant brown rice which is pre-steamed and cooks in seven minutes in the microwave. It's softer (but not soggy) and tastes pretty darned good!

here is a yummy dessert type thing you can try.

Cook your brown rice in half apple juice half water and diced apples.  cook as usual and serve as a dessert or breakfast treat.  If you dont want to cook it with apple juice try cooking as normal, put a few oz apple juice or even apple sauce in it and enjoy.

One of the best sites out there where you can find the amounts compared is this one here: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

It will tell you 1 cup weighs 190 grams (that's for medium grain brown rice) and then you can find the nutrition facts on it too.

I know a bit late, but in case someone gets into the same situation again.
