brown and white rice

Quote  |  Reply

So I know brown rice is so much healthier than white rice.

But my boyfriend is chinese and his family only has white rice. He always complains about how I complain that i dont like eating white rice ( well i do, its good! but i just know brown is better)

Asians are usually so skinny and always eat white rice. So is it really just about calories, is white rice THAT bad for you?

Brown rice is just white rice with the chaff knocked off.  That outer coating has higher fiber, etc, like eating the skin of a potatoe. Aside from that, i don't believe there is much of a difference-  it all depends on the portion size, that can get away from ya quickly.  I say enjoy, don't piss off the "maybe in laws"..hehe

haha yeah :) its hard to resist, since they eat it at EVERY meal

Brown rice is more nutritious and arguably more filling but almost exactly the same calories gramme for gramme.  So if you have a small portion of white rice on your plate and try to get your hands on plenty of vegetables you're not going to suffer calorie-wise.

If Asians are skinny it's because they don't eat as much food as Westerners in total....

I know brown has more fiber and everything, but white rice (the exact same weight, dry) always fills me up more.  I think it's because it expands a bit more than the brown that I buy.  Plus, we some of the Asian dishes I make, brown just doesn't work well.

So yeah, as long as portions are kept under control, there's no reason to feel guilty about eating white rice.

Yeah, watch the portions!

I love brown rice but it takes twice as long to cook :[ how annoying. I'm always super hungry when I get home from the gym so I don't want to way 40 minutes for some stinkin rice!

Try brown basmati rice.... takes 25 minutes to cook.  Just long enough to prepare something nice to serve with it.

My grandmother has always mixed the 2 in a rice cooker.  It comes out great.

Yes, asains are generally smaller and live longer because there definition of portion size is very different from the western cultures definition...  That and traditional asain dishes aren't prepared the same was that you see at places like Manchu Wok, where everything is deep-fat fried and then coated in a sugary glaze...  Traditional asain dishes are healthy and relatively low cal compared to what we see in the US.  Its amazing how we make any healthy meal unhealthy in the states.  Its a process I like to call the westernization of food (batter it, fry it and if you can get away with it glaze it with some very unhealthy sauce)....

I've never had brown rice before so I don't know the difference taste wise(but according to friends brown rice is chewier) but from what I know, brown rice is better for you because it's less processed. White rice is more processed, and because of that your blood sugar will rise faster with white rice compared to brown... You'll also feel hungrier faster because of this, which is why it's recommended to eat more brown rice...

I have cut out a lot of carbs from my diet, but I do have days where I eat white rice. Just watch the portion size, and load up on vegetables and you're good to go. I think asians generally are smaller because of our bone structure. That and, we tend to eat more vegetables compared to meats..

Ever read The Superfoods Rx book? I made my peace with eating white rice after reading it. There is a chapter that lists most edible grains in order based on nutritional benefits along with what those values are. Brown rice falls next to last, just above white rice. Though more nutritious, it's only slightly so. It's not by the leaps and bounds that one would think.

From then on I never thought twice about eating white rice. If I want a more nutritious grain, I reach for hulled barley.
