I'm 16, I used to be really tiny though...I remember when I was in 6th grade I weighed 60lbs hahah crazy
Um, not for nothing, but do you want to have a sixth graders' body forever? Just saying.
From the looks of it, almost none of you all need to lose weight. I know this is all **** you heard before: You should maybe try gaining some muscle, which would help out with any un-wanted fat. I'm 5'3, 128 - 133 pounds (it fluctuates a lot), and I have a pretty muscular build. I've always had a chubby belly and less than spectacular arms, so me wanting to lose a couple pounds is much more justified. BUT DAMN! For our height, below 110 is considered emaciated. That should not be what you want to look like, come on. I've suffered with an eating disorder this past year too, I only got down to 120 below I passed out and almost sacrificed my softball career, but I in no way wanted to look like I was terminally ill.

okay what?
you're recovering from an EATING DISORDER and you are asking on advice on how to lose more weight? you are already too low of a weight for your height AND a teenager.. you are not done growing yet dear child.
why dont you focus on eating ENOUGH and not so much as losing weight.
but hey IF you lose and maintain on a healthy amount of calories to provide adequate growth and organ/body function then I guess go ahead.. but if not I suggest you stop now while your ahead, something about this topic screams 'relasping' to me...
don't mean to criticize but carmen- aren't you in a nearly identical position?

No, she's not.
First off, she's not a young teen. Second, she has put every fiber of her being up to fight her ED and has focused on recovery for a loonnng time. Third, she eats enough. Fourth, she advocates self-love! Sorry if I sound bitter, I'm just trying to help out a friend.
Thanks god there's soemone here with the same build as me. I'm a lot older than most of you here - I'm 33, and I've had a child. The best weight for me is 125 - 128 or so, and it all depends on the muscle I'm packing.
But, by keeping a weight ratio as low as being discussed will really have a terrible effect on your body. A woman is supposed to have a fat ratio of 23% - in order for your hormones to properly function. When you get below this (which if you're under 110, you are pushing it) you can not only stop menstruating, but you can seriously affect your fertility as you get older.
The other problem is that you are actually slowing down your metabolism at a young age. By keeping your body at that level, it will hang on to every calorie because you've tricked it into thinking there may not be any food coming. By doing this in your teens, you may struggle with a sluggish metabolism for life. The only way to avoid this is to eat what you should (and get all those nutrients you may be missing) and do weight bearing exercise that builds muscle (and bone density) which will rev up your metabolism. Then, you can eat more and not gain.
It frightens me to see so many of you desperate to lose 2 pounds on an underweight frame. The bodies you see in the media are not realistic, nor are they healthy.
svkas09 - I am 19 years old, your height, and now weigh 120lbs (w00h00!)
However, I have to say I disagree with your weight loss plan. I know you have heard this before, but 106 is practically underweight for our height. Did you know you need to be at least 110lbs to get your period? And that when you do get your period, you will gain more weight, its inevitable.
I was around 108 when I was 16, and even though its nice to have such a good body, you are still growing. I struggled with this thought for a long time and hated seeing myself inevitably gain weight, but you are a girl. Girls are meant to have curves.
Please don't try and lose weight. Be healthy, work out, eat good foods, but don't let your goal be to lose weight. Let nature run its course. Enjoy eating whatever you want (16 is still an age where you can do this). 106 is a good weight, don't go below that.
My goal is 117. I think for a woman of our height that is a very reasonable weight.
okay first of all, i really think some of you are pushing the "facts". just because someone of this height range is less than 110 lbs, doesn't mean they are close to losing their period. like wth? a certain bmi has almost nothing to do with the fat ratio.
another. how/when did i indicate taht i wanted a body based on media? you dont know my build, and if you did, you'd realize taht some ppl may weigh a lot less, but their fat/body structure is different. maybe i want to lose a few pounds to slim down my entire body by a bit, since there's no other way for me to spot treat my belly area.
lastly, who doesn't want curves? by trying to lose a few pounds, it's not that i want to lose my curves. in fact, i WISH i had more hips, but i don't, so i deal. when i'm thinner, however, i actually have more curves because my waist line slims down. girls can be skinny, healthy, AND curvy.
I got down to 106 and yes, I felt too skinny. I think alot of it has to do with age plus women have different body types, specially over the years... A teen can carry a bit less weight and still look fine :)
first off. i have a COMPLETELY regular period, have for three years...even when i weighed less than i do now.
by body percent fat is 22% so please dont even TRY to say im below the proper fat ratio.
and also, i am a DANCER, which means my legs are shown to far more ppl than i'd like. which also means they need to be lean. my legs right now are built...extremely muscular
i know i messed up my metabolism over the years...i eat more now than i probably have in three years. my frame is not that of an underweight girl, i look completely curvy (boobs, butt, hips, etc.) so really its not a concern to me if i lost two lbs. right now my weight range is from 106-108. 107 being my average.
haha dancers are intense!! you're bmi is not accurate at all hon, cuz you guys are all muscle ;3
I wasn't trying to attack you or anything...I just can't understand why you would want to lose weight. I have a friend whose 5.5 and 104 lbs of all muscle (she's a gymnast and a diver, expends around 3500 calories a day), so yes I know people can look good being skinnier. However, she isn't trying to LOSE weight...maybe what you're trying to do is tone up?
Also, I only mentioned the period thing because it is true for most girls around the 5'4" height, they don't get their period until 110lbs. I wasn't implying anything about you, I was just throwing it out there. There are exceptions to every rule of course, because no one's body goes by the book.
All I wanted to say is live life to the fullest - clearly you don't have to worry yet. Being aware of the fact that you have to be healthy is different than trying to lose weight. Honestly, so much will change between now and the end of high school/beginning of college, you'd be surprised. I am only 19, but a totally different person than I was at 16.
You can discount what I've said, but it doesn't change the facts. You are playing a dangerous game with your health - considering some of you are 'recovering' from eating disorders just further demonstrates it.
Nonetheless, it's your life to lead. You make your own decisions, and live out whatever consequences - good or bad. I have friends now desperately trying to get pregnant, but are now suffering infertility because of bad dietary choices in their youth. However, most people must learn their lessons the hard way. It's not just about body fat - it's about eating the right balance of nutrients to set yourself up for health. Now is the time to eat well - to build strong bones, healthy skin, good circulation.
...But what the hell do I know?
Interesting reads here. Since I lasted posted, I have gained some muscle mass (which is essentially in the long run, what I wanted because looking toned it hot), and I weigh between 104-110 (I'm 5'2)...it depends on the day it seems..I'm not sure what's up with the scale or what my true weight is. For the record as well, I have never had an ED/starved myseld nor have I ever lost my period. I'm 20 years old, and last year when I had a micro-fit test my body fat was 16.5%. STILL had a period. Always have, always normal and right on time. I've always been a small person, and being at this size is what I am most comfortable with, and I do not, nor have I ever look emanciated. I wear a size 3 not a 00. Everyone truly is different. Numbers are numbers, but if you have never seen a person LIVE before, you cannot make such generalized statements. JMO. I am only speaking for myself, and I cannot diagnose others so I'm not applying this post to the whole thread.
Do very thin models get their periods?
Models menstruate if their body type is naturally thin, but if their small size is due to an eating disorder, then they lose their periods just like anyone... Read more
