bulking this winter

Quote  |  Reply

ok so since im planning on doing get huge in a hurry, thought id take this opportunity to bulk during this season. and when i say bulk i don't mean stuffing my face with crap or going over the top.

im actually going to p-l-a-n to eat more (a bit beyond maintenance) instead of accidentally eating more.

and im also staying away from as much processed foods as i can. everything is going to be simple & nutritious, and im going to eat every 3 hours, no matter what is going on with work.

Great for you for having enough courage to purposefully over-eat.  I have a terrible fear of gaining weight and then not being able to lose after.  Keep us posted with your progress & definitely take some pics!

Will do. I have some what of a fear but like I mentioned I've been accidentally overeating anyway, so I might as well make some smart choices.

What level of extra calories are you going to shoot for?  I admit I'm curious about this also and was always too worried about the weight gain also.

Are you going to do a cutting phase after your finish the bulk?

I don't count calories anymore. Can't handle it.  But I am going to slowly add more food into my diet. First I think I'll start off with adding some oatmeal again in the mornings, then perhaps adding some extra fats in for dinner (mmm, roasted garlic in some oil) as well as some stews/casseroles, then start adding in some healthy carbs (like sweet potatoes) again at lunch time, add in some nuts around snack times, then add in cheese around. I might stagger all this week by week during work weeks and then i'll have to have an extra think about weekends, they tend to be the trickiest.

Octo - I am in a similar situation.  I haven't been able to gain significant strength or muscle at the gym because my calories are not high enough.  At the same time, I am not disciplined enough to keep calories low enough to actually see fat loss.  The result is very small improvements each month from continued lifting and spurts of small caloric deficits.  I'm not really complaining.  The slow progress is better than none.  But I have been really interested in trying a bulk.  I have been thinking of doing it at the beginning of Nov. regardless of where I am with fat loss.  So I may be joining you!  I will be watching for your reports on how it is going.

Hey Laura,

Ok we'll keep each other going. I'm not going to start until next week. Ugh had too much to drink & eat on my holidays in Spain. But got some recipes I want to try out.

Yeah the whole slow progress of going back and forth was just getting too tiring, although I'm happy with any progress.

From what I've been reading, as long as you don't treat bulking like pigging out and you push yourself on the lifting, fat gains should even out ok. As well as slowly adding in more calories. Also this whole eating clean business and staying away from foods that you know don't agree with you. Or foods that you tend to pig out on, and watching the amount and type of carbs you eat. I'm going to limit certain grains that I know make my stomach all poofy. And just keeping the foods you eat unprocessed.

Planning what you eat rather than just giving into to overeating is crucial. That seems to be the biggest deal to bulking without gaining too much fat. I'm not sure how I will personally respond to this but I'm willing to take a chance these next few months.

Sounds good.  I am not going to start until I get back from London.  I am going from Nov 6-10.  I might need to detox a little when I return - so maybe Nov 16 for me.  And like you, I am going to stay away from processed food.  I want to eat lots of lean protein, whole grains, fruits, veggies and healthy fats.  I think my maintenance is around 1700-1800 cal.  I'm going to start with about 2000 cal.

I think I should've done a detox when I got back, so good idea!!!! I get post-holiday depression this last year. Makes me dread going on holidays.

I have not been able to reign it in since my holidays. And have not worked out in almost 3 weeks. So I say once I get back on track next week, all the non-processed foods & some activity will do me a real world of good. My body doesn't understand what I'm doing (or not doing) to it.

But I am excited to start next week, shoulder still touch & go, but we'll see. Eating loads of healthy foods, exercising my butt off but only doing it 3-4 times per week. I've decided that any cardio will take a back seat to proper meal preparing if I'm crunched for time. I want to get this nutrition thing down nicely for this bulk. My fat can't afford any slip ups.

Here's just a sample of my first day. Missed about 20grams of protein though as I skipped a snack. And still can't do Huge in a Hurry cuz of shoulder. But I am getting a barbell at home for future use.

Breakfast:
oatmeal with cashews & almonds, some ground flaxseeds soaked in date syrup, splash of milk. And a pear. (10 gr Protein, im guess couldn't finish all of oatmeal)
Morning Snack:
sweet potato, spinach omelet with cheese
Lunch:
quorn pieces, spicy sweet potato sauce, spinach (26 gr Protein)
Snack:
Flaxbread, lf cottage cheese (with some english mustard for a little kick), roasted peppers & aubergines (14 gr Protein)
PWO:
ON powder, banana & 6 cashews (altho I've been reading that you shouldn't have fats with your PWO but I can't just eat a banana) (26 gr Protein)
Dinner(soon):
Veggie puffs (from a friend, has wheat flour in it tho); quorn-leek-cauliflower-cabbage-carrots-onion- broccoli-chili casserole. Might add some beans & cheese for a bit more protein. (43 gr Protein)

That looks yummy and good for you.  Have you looked at Leigh Peele's Body by Eats?  She got lots of recipes for bulking.

I'll go look that up, thanks!

Still bummed I can't start my program yet, but I have yet to get this new diet down anyway. So much work with planning, and I missed a day of planning & found myself running out of food, so didn't make the best choices.
