Do you burn more calories in hot weather?
Asked by nlb235 on Aug 02, 2009 in Weight Loss

I know that when a person is really cold the body needs to work harder to maintain a proper internal temperature and thus, burns more calories. Does the same type of thing occur when the weather is really hot and the body has to work to keep cool?

Answer

No one knows for sure.  Some experts say that calorie requirements decrease in the heat because of the tendency to reduce activity, but it also makes sense that the body burns calories by working harder to stay cool.  Either way, the body ‘acclimatizes’ to adapt to the heat within 10 - 14 days at which point calorie burning returns to its usual predictable steady state.
