I have recently started a 5 a week workout routine which involves three days of cardio and two days of cardio and weights.  When I jog I only go at 4.3 mph but it still gets my heart going pretty good.  I know that some people can run at 6 mph for an hour with no problem yet I am huffing and puffing if I even try to go at 4.7 mph.  So my question is am I burning the same amount of calories as the person who is going faster without a problem when I am going my slower speed?

btw, I'm 23, f, 5.4, 148lbs.

Don't think about what other people are burning. Worry about yourself. Tongue out

But to answer the question, if you are having more difficulty then you are exerting yourself more. If you compare yourself to someone of the exact same stats, but they are in better physical condition, like being able to run faster with more ease, they are not working to their full potential. You are burning more calories than them because your body has to work harder.

Now as you get more fit, and in better condition and gain stamina, the same will occur for you. You will eventually have to increase your intensity to get an effective heart-raising workout.

Thanks for the reply!  I don't really care what other people are burning I just said it that way to have it make sense.  I was actually just curious because I do jog often and when I put it in my activity log they have walking and running catergorized as speeds.  I don't know if the calories burned by the speed in which a person goes would be an accurate amount because, as you said, it would depend on the intensity for the person doing the activity.
