bursitis

Quote  |  Reply
I am a 54 year old woman that has been doing aerobics since I was 27. I was recently diagnosed with a cholesterol problem so I kicked it up a notch and started jogging and stair climbing. Unfortunately that triggered a very painful case of bursitis in my hip.  As long as I don't work out the pain stops and as soon as I resume (on a much slower level) of aerobics it comes back. Even walking at a medium to fast pace will bring it on. Has anybody found a way to still work out and not trigger this painful condition? Swimming was suggested by my doctor but I don't have a pool.

Swmiming is what they recommend, Hub has in shoulder and has had for years bothering him, Mine was my elbow, off and on. I don't no how to get rid of it just to treat  the pain. feel better.
I have it in my shoulder and it was painful for a month.  I didn't want to take any cortisone shot, and told my doctor I wasn't using that arm and he told me that was wrong, to start using it.

I started some exercises which were painful, but gradually it left over the next month.

Did you google info about it.  I like the info on the Mayo Clinic site.

Well I believe that I may have found an excercise I can do and that maybe alot of bursitis suffers can do. I have started practicing Thai Chi. I really enjoy it and it requires constant flowing movement and concentration. It does not put stress on my joints but hopefully will help build muscle. So I would advise anybody with my problem to give it a try. This site is so helpful. I am four pounds away from my goal of 130 pounds. Due to my age and menapause I could never lose before I seriously started weighing my food and putting in calories on this site.

Don't give up if I can lose so can you!Cool

I have had a problem with my hip for a few years now.  I had assumed it was related to my weight so I didn't mention it to my doctor.  When I'd lost 80 pounds and was still having the same problem with my hip, I figured it was time to say something.  I also spent some time searching the internet with my symptoms and thought that it was bursitis.  I went to the doctor today and, this time, told him my symptoms and he believes that it IS bursitis.

I guess I am lucky--I am able to exercise without any real problem.  My pain is only when I try to sleep at night, and if it gets bad, will still be painful in the morning.  Occasionally, it will bother me during the day but it's not very often.  I have walked, done walk at home videos, ridden a bike, kick boxing (video only), and for the last few months, I've been swimming (and now added riding a stationary bike in the pool).  My doctor has recommended ibuprofen 3x per day for a week to reduce the inflammation.  I'm hoping that it helps.  Coincidentally, I am also going away for the weekend (just DH and I - YEAH!!!!) and then going on a business trip so I will be exercising less and I'm hoping that the bursitis will improve.

Have any of you had cortisone shots for your bursitis?  I was reading about that being a treatment.  Not looking to try it just wondering if it was successful.

try a stationary bike. go to a sports store to test ride it to see if taking your wt off it helps.

tiger balm is nice for deep pain. epsom salt soaks...

also maybe have a bone density test done. you could have little fractures causing pain.

also menopause causes joint and tendon pain.
so if you are going through that a natural helper would be to consume soy products granted you dont have a thyroid problem.

I have had cortisone shots ( 3) and yes they do work, however, it can sort of fool you. You feel alot better and if you try to excercise in a short time it will return.

Actually I have been laying off the excercising and at first it feels better but then after a time the lack of excercise can also make it worse. I don't know what the solution is. I miss aerobic excercise. It improves my mood and just moving alot is fun. This is so depressing. I have been working out for almost 30 years and have the energy to continue but my hip will really hurt if I'm not careful. I have noticed that the trigger seems to be sleeping on the side where I have the bursitis. It's hard to sleep all night on one side though.

It is just so frustrating and doctor's don't seem to know how to improve it. I asked if going to therapy would help but my doc was not too optomistic about it.

I wonder what your doctor would say if you asked him/her about whether fish oil would help.

I have arthritis in my ankle and I take cod liver oil first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and it makes a huge difference for me.  If I run out of the capsules, within 2 days my ankle is killing me.  If I take it, I'm fine as long as I don't do extremely vigorous high impact exercise.

Joint-Friendly Exercises

  • Swimming
  • Biking
  • Rowing
  • Elliptical
  • Low Impact Aerobics
  • that funny-looking fast walking (hey! that can really get your heart rate up!)
  • Salsa dancing
:)
Oh yeah, just saw that you're doing tai chi -- excellent!

I have a qigong video (kind of similar) and I LOVE doing it!

Has anybody tried acupuncture? I have been giving my hip a long rest as bursitis is primarily an inflamation hoping, since I'm a nut about excercise, that maybe it would get better. That's not working either.

The biggest problem does occur when I try to sleep. Laying on that side is the trigger. I have even been using a sort of crate layered mat so that my hip would have a little hidden cussion as not to sit directly on the mattress. Does help but not enough.

Bursitis is a bugger.

I find that giving the time off to heal helps and then when I do get back to my exercise, I take a few ibuprofen tablets about 1/2 an hour before the exercise with a small snack.  It seems to help most of the time.

Thank you so much for that suggestion, I can't believe it never occurred to me to try taking the ibuprofen before I excercise instead of after. I will definately give it a try.  I am going to try to find some books about it as well and if I find any other information I will post it here.

Thank you smwhipple!Laughing
