Butter?
I'm trying to lose about 20 pounds, and I'm planning to eat for breakfast a whole wheat bread with butter and a small latte. Is this ok for a diet??
Thank you :)
no thats not really ok, its not very much food. your body needs nutrients !
how about add a couple eggs and some fruit with that, like a banana ?
eggs are only about 90 calories each and are loaded with protein, which you need. the banana will give you a quick boost of energy in the morning, slightly over 100 calories. skip the latte, its wasted calories, go with a glass of milk or juice.
the butter to begin with is not a good idea. you should try putting on some natural almond butter or peanut butter- something with nutrients behind the calories. and the latte, not bad as long as you use nonfat milk and don't put a bunch of sweeteners/sugar in it.
whatever calorie limit you are in, just make sure you meet a minimum and go below a maximum. you don't gain weight from bread and butter, you gain weight from calories,
then, you are not "on a diet", you are "eating a healthy balanced diet for the rest of your life"
and butter is okay in moderation. not as good as some other foods like olive oil, but it's been around for centuries and well known to human; if you really want butter, go for it :)
I agree that you should have a more substantial breakfast.
Butter is alright to have in moderation in one's diet. Don't go slathering a tablespoon on...a half or a third of that much butter should do for hot toast. Butter is better for you than margarine [no source]. Margarine is processed fats and oils and chemicals. Butter is made from animal fats. As stated above, olive oil is healthier than butter (it's made from vegetable fats) but olive oil on toast for breakfast isn't all that appealing unless you're hard-core Italian. lol

I disagree. Saturated fats are a necessary part of our diets. They provide the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K; provide the cholesterol that makes up our cell membranes and improve the absorption of calcium into our bones. The idea that saturated fats are bad is incredibly outdated. Yes, overdoing it is not a good idea, but that applies to most things in life. Olive oil is not healthier than butter. They are both healthy but for different reasons.
and butter tastes good on toast too !
besides its only like 30 or 40 calories, well worth it for that buttery goodness on your toast in the morning !
I agree with the "butter is good" idea. I don't ever buy margarine or shortening... we only use butter in our house. In moderation, it adds lots of great flavor, satiety, and I know it isn't full of artificial ingredients like margarine. I don't like "fake" foods so I generally just stick with the real thing and use in moderation.
My breakfast, for instance, on my workout days is 2 pieces of wheat toast with butter and 2 eggs. Probably around 475-500 calories, sure, but it gives me lots of energy to do a good workout. I find I do much better with most of my daily calories earlier in the day. Especially protein.

I have to most definitely agree with the higher calorie/protein breakfast. It really starts you off to have a much more energetic day which, in turn, helps you burn more calories!! I have found that my low energy days "happen" to be those where I skimped on breakfast, or was rushed and didn't have time for it.
I agree that you need some protein in your breakfast. I like Smart Balance as a butter substitute; it's healthier than butter but tastes better than margarine in my opinion. Still should be used in moderation, though.

I get my breakfast protein from milk most days. Cereal and milk is my staple breakfast. I'll have eggs on the weekends...usually poached or hard boiled.
