butter or jam

Quote  |  Reply

I usually have a couple pieces of toast to round out my breakfast (Aunt Millies 100% whole wheat). I've been putting a small pat of butter on each piece of toast.  No biggy, but every bit counts right?  I simply can't.eat.my.toast.plain.  So... I have this organic blackberry jam that I like from Cascadian Farms (~10g of sugar)...

Do you think I'd be better off with jam on my toast, or butter?  Sugar vs. Sat Fats?

As long as you don't completely smother your toast with it, I'd say that jam is definitely the better choice. It may be higher in sugar, but it's better than all the calories and saturated fat. Plus, some jams actually have some vitamin C or other vitamin in them. Anyway, in moderation, jam is the better choice.

butter, espeically organic fresh butter is high in vitamins, and despite what many say, people for eons have eaten butter, and never gotten too sick.

everything in complete moderation.

Ive acutally even heard that the saturated fat in butter, etc. Helps your body absorb fat soluble vitamins. So having bread with butter, or cereal with whole milk might even be more nutritioius.

of course, im only thowing out a theory.

Personally, i still use butter, just a pat or two, i dont slather it on. i would probably say that butter is a better choice than jam. yes, jam  offers less calories, but butter acutally has nutrients, vitamins and fats that your cells and brain needs to survive. Remember, your cells are made of lipids.

i'd recommend sugar-free jam; 10 calories per tablespoon and you don't have to worry about sugar OR fat.

butter is just way too high in calories and fat for my tastes, but that's just me.

hm... sugar-free jam...  does sugar-free organic jam exist?  berries without sugar? unpossible!  I'd like to sidestep the preservatives.

theres jam with apple juice as a sweetener. thats organic, etc.

hmm, well i checked the label and the organic jam I buy does have "organic sugar water" in it... so I guess that's extra sugar I don't need

I've cut out refined sugars completely, because I've found that they only make me crave more and more. It's a horrible never ending cycle for me. But when I cut them out, I find that I completely don't miss them. If I need something sweet to drizzle, I'll use honey. Honey has a higher glycemic index, so it is absorbed more slowly, and it doesn't spike your blood sugar as much. So you might try that. The calories are also comparable to jam, but honey is even sweeter so you'll need less of it.

Or you can try vegetable oil spreads that taste like butter. There are so many out there right next to the butter. They have the taste without the saturated fat, and the fat is good to help fill you up at least. In fact, I would say this is better than honey, because honey is delicious, but you really don't need the empty sugar calories.

But anyway, if you prefer jam or butter, just go ahead and have what you want, just measure it out and use reasonable portions of it.

two words - chemical butter :)

I use I can't believe its not butter spray on EVERYthing.. broccoli, pasta, toast.. tastes just like butter and its zero calories!

just don't forget that 10 grams of sugar is a lot and sugar turns into fat and each peice of bread has 100 calories in it!

Use earth balance. Its got no animal fat and it tastes really really buttery and its all natural. its like 100 cals for a tablespoon too.

I'd say definitely jam

Get something with no added sugars or some you kind find with "half the sugar" of regular jams. Organic brands might have one flavored with stevia so it'll be sugar free. Just look at labels on different ones and compare sugar gram

I really depends on what you're after.  If you tend to binge or crave sweets after a small amount of sugar, stick with the butter.  A pat is not much.  I find that a little planned fat is good for appetite control.

I tend to eat bread before exercise so I will put honey on it.  I wouldn't this just for breakfast though, it would make me want more sweets.

it pretty much IS butter. it only has zero calories when you spray it once, unfortunately.

12 sprays is 10 calories and 1g fat.

How about fat free cream cheese spread? More protein less sugar and no fat.  Also a bit of peanut butter and a drizzle of honey.  That's yummy and ur getting good fat and lots of protein. A tiny bit of honey just makes it a bit sweet.

How about home made apple sauce?

Just chopped up apples in a pan with a tablespoon of water and heat until mushy

Or tomato puree and a sprinkle of herbs for a savoury flavour :)

xXx

These are all great suggestions.  Thanks everyone.

I think I might try out some sugar free organic jam.

Fat free cream cheese, honey, and home made apple sauce are interesting alternatives though.  Personally, I don't have a big sweet tooth, nor do I get cravings, but I like a bit of variation to mix up the uniformity of a piece of toast.  Plain toast is boring.

Why not mix it up a bit.... put butter on one piece and jam on the other?

(I know you were really asking which is better... but there seem to be pros and cons to each... so why not eat both and enjoy... or see which you like better?)
I was going to say jam, but I like nctracy's idea better.

But not even looking at the calories, I personally like jam better - I just don't get butter :/

Edit: and sugarfree jam has 10 calories per tbsp
Edit: okay, someone's said that already
