So, I think I like cabbage. Not a lot, but I like it. Bought a huge head of it yesterday and had some steamed cabbage. Well... it wasn't as good as I remembered it, but it was ok. Originally I was attracted to it because it's so low in cal.
Any ideas for a great way to jazz up some cabbage? I've for 5/6 of a head of it to eat up.
Is it even all that good for you?
you can obviously shred and make slaw, I love asain slaw, you can make braised cabbage and apples...
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and cubed
1 pint unfiltered apple juice
1/4-teaspoon caraway seeds
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1/2 head of red cabbage, shredded
Heat the canola oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the apple to the pan and cook until lightly browned. Increase the heat to high and add the apple juice, caraway seeds, salt, pepper and cabbage to the pan. Cover the pan and shake to toss the cabbage to coat.
Reduce the heat to low and cook for 20 minutes.
I like it in sautees sometimes, and obviously cabbage soup...
Or try this recipe for fried cabbage which you can lighten by cutting out all the butter and reducing the bacon to 2 slices. Even lightened it is the best fried cabbage I've ever had, and I know fried cabbage.
There you have it, I love cabbage and those are the ways I eat it.
How did you season your steamed cabbage? My aunt taught me to chop up a whole head, put it in a pan with a few tablespoons of water in the bottom, and dot the top with a little bit of butter or margarine - it doesn't take very much at all. Then once it's cooked down, add some salt and WHITE pepper. The white pepper has a slightly different flavor than black, and it's really nice. Everyone in my family loves cabbage that way, even if they don't really like cabbage.
sometimes i get on streaks where i buy the shredded cabbage, which i guess is intended for 'slaw. but i put it in salads or even use it completely in place of lettuce in salads. i use it anywhere i might use lettuce, like in a pita pocket or a sandwich... or i sautee it either add a ton of other veggies to the sautee, or sneak it into whatever i'm making for dinner.... spaghetti sauce, whatever. hmmmm maybe i'll buy some shredded cabbage tonight...
i personally love it in a styr fry with loads of other veggies, prawns and a squeeze of lemon juice, lemon zest and crushed ginger (if you like). yum yum :) otherwise, i'd be quite happy to steam the whole thing and eat it - i love simple, unadulterated food lol!
I love Cabbage Soup. It's delicious. I don't really have a recipe....I
just through everything together and bake.
1 head cabbage
celery
1 onion
1 bag baby carrots
1 large can fat free chicken broth
soy sauce to taste
garlic powder
2 boneless, skinless, chicken breast.
Cut up cabbage, celery, and onion. Add carrots, soy sauce, garlic powder,
and chicken broth. Put the chicken breast on top and cook in oven
at 350 until tender.........usually at least an hour or two.
Look up the Weight Watcher's cole slaw! It's loaded with crunchy veggies along with the cabbage, and takes hardly any dressing. It gets better as it sits in the refrigerator.
How about stuffed cabbage..take a big leaf..fill with some lean turkey chopmeat and some tomato sauce..steam them up..delish!
I like to dress steamed cabbage with cider or basalmic vinegar.
I like cabbage soup. You can get pretty creative with it. I make mine with:
1 head of cabbage (chopped into bite sizes)
1 large onion (chopped)
2 to 3 cups of celery (depending on how much you like cooked celery)
4 or 5 large carrots (peeled and cut into 1 inch slices)
3 cans of stewed tomatos
1 package of Lipton Onion Soup mix (mix with 1 cup of water)
Put everything into a very large pot and cover
Bring to a boil then turn down to a simmer (simmer until carrots are tender). May need to add water during cooking time
Taste broth while simmering to see before adding salt and pepper to taste
After soup is cooled, separate into containers and refrigerate.
Meat or cooked pastas or poultry, etc. can be added when warming up to eat for each meal. This is low cal and depending on what is added, low in fat.
I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions (even though I'm not OP). A friend gave us a HUGE head on Sunday. I made a slaw w hot peppers yesterday & steamed some. Maybe I'll make some soup today!
I like to steam it with carrots and broccoli.

Hey lady!!! How've you been!
So what I like to do with cabbage is of course steam it, but then I like to put a nice big piece of fatty fish on top and let all of it's fat ooze all over the cabbage! I know this may sound weird but it is super good!!!
If you are not feeling the fish idea, I would sautee your cabbage with a bit of olive oil, garlic, hot pepper & red pepper and eat up! It is super good! :)
I really like eating cabbage raw too, dipped in olive tapenade of course! - That is super addicting! LOL!
cook it in a skillet with butter or bcaon grease... it is sooooooo gooooooooood
