so I had bought the diet book "skinny bitch" today to see what all the fuss was about... and while I am rather appauld by the language/insults, I can't help but agree with some of the 'facts' for the most part  (ie: the difference between good and bad carbs, elimination of refined sugars/dairy/aspartame.. etc.)

but the part about caffiene/coffee causing weight gain really throws me off... they say that coffee and caffiene causes acidic reactions in the body which turn into fat cells... WHAT? since when!

if this is true then why is caffiene used in so many diet pills, supposivly speeds your metabolism, surpresses hunger and can benefit weight loss..

i can see it cause weight gain if you mix your coffee with lots of cream and sugar, but this "acidic" thing is brand new news to me..

can someone please explain? or have any supportive information to this?

I love coffee! I don't want to have to give it up because the acidity supposivly turns into fat cells...

what? that's crazy!! i am very much addicted to caffeine. there's so much buzz about coffee being both bad and good, i don't even know what to think anymore either. the other day my girlfriend and i were at the gym and she starts telling me how she wants to quit coffee because it's bad for you and sets off free radicals or something. then the very next day on the nightly news there is some blurb about how a new study says coffee is good for you! who knows.

i just tried to find the link but i think the video has been deleted? it was just on june 17th. here are the details - if u find it, let me know!

" Video: Health Benefits

Drinking coffee in the morning may do more than just wake you up. A new Harvard study says it actually keeps your heart healthy and may possibly help you live longer. 6/17/08"

hmm i never heard that coffee can cause weight gain [unless you add alot of stuff to it] i read some where that Coffee reduces the risk of type 2 Diabetes. Caffeine speeds up your metabolism making it easier for us to burn more calories --- even while at rest

i am so addicted to coffee. i hope it dosent turn into fat cells!

that book is a load of crap. i read it. its pure crap. you would eat nothing but seeds and wheatgrass if they had their way.

its well documented coffee helps with fat metabolism.what a stupid statement. look at the italians who INVENTED coffee... they are a supremely lean nation.

nancy clark is a leading sports nutritionist to olympic teams as well as eating disorder sufferers and she says coffee makes ppl fat the way the take in in the US, with cream and sugar galore.

the reactive drop in blood pressure is found only in some people. but you would know by now if you were a sufferer with that coz coffee would give you the shakes all the time

phewwww thank you!

I looooooooooooooove my coffee.. but I don't drink it "excessivily", maybe one to two cups a day.

I would understand "coffee makes you fat IF you add cream and sugar galore" but causing an acidic environment in the body that makes you store fat cells? COME ON!

I think there is a little more evidence to prove that coffee does help speed your metabolism and that it does contain a lot of healthy anti-oxidants... IF this "acid environment" BS was true, I think we would of heard a little bit more of it, don't ya think?

thanks again, man i am relieved.. in fact i'm gonna go have me a cup right now!

ive heard about the fat thing too from a dif source... can anyone PROVE that its not true? (i ask hopefully, not skeptically)

I've heard it can make you store fat around your abdomen for some reason . . .but never that it straight up causes weight gain.

http://www.pnf.org/CoffeeEdited041001.pdf this site has pro's and con's of coffee. it says that coffee helps boost metabolism

i haven't read skinny bitch but it sounds like a load of crap.

oh it is a load of crap... while they do have some good points about the benefits of eating complex carbs, and eliminating unnessary foods like refined sugars, dairy, and excess animal products.. it is pretty much a bible for pissy pro-ed bitches.. if your self esteem isn't low enough already, read this. I promise it will make you feel like absolute ****

ie: what you CANT eat outweighs what you can eat.. no meat, , no dairy, no sugar, no coffee etc... the book itself was written by 'models'... 80% of the paragraphs are insults; they call you a fat disgusting pig more times then you can count.

basically to be a skinny bitch you eat 3 peices of fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch, and whole wheat pasta for dinner... no snacks. don't eat until you feel famished, and only vegan all natural products are allowed.

I don't know about you, but if I wait till I feel famished I end up overeating or binging like crazy at my next meal.. and three peices of fruit for breakfast? come on thats like 150calories! there is no way in hell that would last me till lunch... ugh.

basically the only things that I agree with are that dairy and animal meat is not nessescary, and neither is sugar or artificial sweeteners. Also that 'good-carbs' are GOOD and that the atkins diet is a total joke.

i think it is an entertaining read in a sense, but you have to take everything they say with a grain of salt..

i don't think it would matter what turns what into what kind of cells unless you eat over your calorie limit, right..?

seriously; what is all this bad carb/good carb nonsense? a calorie is a calorie. i don't understand what people mean when they try to explain the difference between "good" and "bad" calories. as long as you don't eat over your limit, you won't gain weight.

but oh well... you know what? i wish i could swallow coffee. i really hate it. i've been trying for the past few days to like it but it tastes awful. in frappuccinos it's one thing, but alone... gross. if coffee by any means makes you fat then maybe i'm safe lol.

To many people, a regular coffee means driving to Starbucks and getting a 'tall' or 'grande' or whatever the hell with the cream, sugar, vanilla, the works. But to people like us who are more educated in the area of diet, a cup of coffee is a cup of coffee, with maybe a bit of cream or a packet of splenda.

When I was at my lowest weight, I was drinking like two mugs of coffee a day. Coffee is an appetite suppressant. The only way coffee would stimulate your appetite is if you were dehydrated; coffee has a diuretic effect which can lead to dehydration. And we all know that the body often mistakes thirst for hunger. But as garnet18 said, I'm still a believer of 'a calorie is a calorie.'

That book is so dumb. The few good points they make are overshadowed by their language when they just yell at you for eating certain food. If i remember correctly, they list their sources of information in the book so maybe you could search for the article they're referencing?

Yes "a calorie is a calorie" but the TYPE of calorie you consume does make a difference too! You must remember that 'weight' is not necessarily a marker of how healthy your body is.

I went to a seminar a few weeks ago run by Jennie Brand-Miller (from Sydney University in Australia) who I guess you could say 'invented' the glycemic index (GI) symbol - a way of ranking carbohydrates according to their effect on blood glucose levels. Her research showed that high GI diets (or simple carbs) are linked to an increased appetite, inhibited fat oxidation, lower BMR and decreased insulin sensitivity. High GI diets are also linked to a 50% increased risk of heart disease (there was a recent Dutch study carried out involving 15,714 women) and a 60% increased risk of diabetes.

On the other hand, complex carbs help with exercise endurance and insulin sensitivity, and are also linked with improved inflammation, acne and other health benefits!

So whilst you might remain under your "calorie limit" whilst eating prodomninantly simple carbs, there may be health implications that are not reflected immediately in your weight ;)

i have read excerpts from the book and do not thing it is a good read. it might be fun fo some, but not for me (and i have nothing against an ocassional rude word, just i do not like the overall tone).

i have lost over 60 lbs and i drink coffee daily.  i have never seen any scientifically based article saying it might make one gain fat, onla articles that say things like it boosts metabolism and might make one irritable and agitated, ie it is not to be overdone.

I justttttttt finished reading Skinny Bitch.. and you know what? I'd rather be fat than eat the **** they tell you to eat!

But I also did my own little research and looked at all of their sources cited and wellp lets just say the meat industry isn't the only one who has biased opinions. All of their "findings" and "information" is biased and they only represent one side of everything, not to mention the only science degree that either of them have is hollistic, which is cool, but not exactly two sided.

I agree with some of the things they say, but come on.

this is true, but people seem to CONSTANTLY confuse weight loss and health. i was under the impression that the OP simply wanted to know if caffeine caused fat gain, which, if you eat under maintenance, it cannot. if somebody asks if such-and-such food will make them fat, i will respond by telling them that a calorie is a calorie. while this isn't true for health benefits, it's true for weight, which is what everybody seems to have questions regarding.

i mix-ups like these happen because they're thinking that weight loss and health are synonymous, which they aren't (like you said).

Wow that WOULD be scary if that were true!!! I've been drinking coffee since I was 17! Only 1-2 cups a day, but I haven't had any for over 3 weeks Frown because it gives me stomach problems. I read an article that gave all the Pros and Cons of drinking coffee, and it turning into fat cells or whatever was NOT one of them.

it says that caffiene makes an acidic environment which causes the body to store fat...

based on the lack of proof i am going to assume that this is more of a far-fetched theory then an actual true fact

i for one am going to keep believing in the whole CALORIE theory, in which if you eat MORE then you burn you gain weight, not that certain foods make you gain weight.. this seems to make a hell of a lot more sense

i love coffee... and i dont know how i would manage to get through a long shift at work without at least 1-2 cups!

...

hmm, perhaps the lack of caffiene is the reason those authors are 'bitches'!

I had seen on PBS a health show that indicated coffee released more fat cells into the blood stream. Of course it said if they weren't used they settled back some where. There is some actual research measuring people exercising and eating with coffee. Perhaps one of our nutritionist friends can digest that for us. It always seemed funny that many diets recommended cutting out coffee, but those are the same that say anything in water is not water.

While I like reading and finding out about other opinions, I find my body is the best measure and Yes without coffee I can be a first class B1tch. So for my happiness and my family's sanity I drink coffee.

Ok, I went back and found the article thing that I remembered reading about the Pros and Cons of coffee...I might have been wrong about one thing. That is IF this article even has any truth to it. It's from a website called AskMen.com and one of the Cons is that coffee contains something that hardens the arteries and causes more heart attacks. Could this even be true!?!? Someone please read this and tell me what they think. I don't drink coffee anymore but I did for years and years, and most of my family are coffee lovers!
