Does caffeine stunt growth?
Asked by anonymous on Jun 29, 2010 in Family & Pregnancy

Answer

There is no evidence that caffeine stunts growth per se, but it does represent a missed opportunity for children to intake beneficial nutrients. Whenever caffeinated soda or a cup of coffee displaces a glass of milk, the body is deprived of calcium, vitamin D, phosphorus, potassium, B-vitamins, and other nutrients. A high calcium intake is particularly important in youth when calcium uptake by the bones is at its peak. In addition, caffeine unnecessarily stimulates the central nervous system and can create a dependency. The bottom line: caffeinated beverages are not recommended during growth.

Not All Processed Foods Are Created Equal
Fact: a diet containing whole, fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best for a healthy mind and body. Although true, it can be hard to keep food fresh at home for longer periods of time, and if you have no time to shop every few days, boxed and canned foods become appealing. We often hear about heavily processed frozen dinners and processed foods worth avoiding, but there are minimally processed foods that do pack a lot of nutrition and may be worth having in the fridge or cupboard.
