I have lost 10 lbs in about a month and I do not work out at all. I am going to start soon, but have not done any as of yet. My husband has lost 22 lbs in 2 months and all he does is ride the stationary bike a little bit. We both count the calories that we eat and we usually do not exceed the calories that this site has calculated for us. I am guilty of going under my alloted calories for the day but not by that much. So, the answer to your question is yes, it really does work. Log your infomation daily as I do or weekly, whatever you want. Let me know if this helps.

I lost my first 35-40 lbs without working out at all. Calorie counting definitely does work for losing weight, but to get the muscle and toned body you gotta hit the gym.

If you work out you can eat more!  but i think that it is a combination to be healthy and have you will have a beter chance of keeping the weight off.

For me, calorie counting has had a much bigger impact than working out. I started trying to lose weight by adding exercise, because I already ate pretty healthfully, and I worked out 5 days a week for 2 months and didn't lose any weight. I gained a bit of muscle, but there was very little visible difference. Then I found this website and tried counting my calories - I was eating way more than I thought and even adding in the exercise was only getting me to maintenance.

Once I started counting calories and maintaining a small deficit, I started losing weight gradually. I still exercise, but mostly for health reasons rather than weight loss.

I've lost 50 pounds in 6 months almost exclusively with counting calories.  I did some exercising during the summer, but nothing on a schedule and it didn't amount to a whole lot.  I lost the weight, but it was just a smaller version of my old self.  I look great in clothes, but too flabby without.  I'm in maintenance mode this month and will be starting a serious exercise schedule in January to tone up.

I have went from 247 down to 202 right now. I count my calories.... the days that I don't go to the gym I stay between 1200 to 1300 calories.... when I work out it stays between 1200 and 1500 calories. I usually workout 6 days a week....  4 days of weight training and 30 minutes of cardio and on the other two days its abs and 60 minutes cardio... It all depends on your schedule.. but weight training will boost your metabolism. and plus when you workout your not just worry about the food you eat.. you mind is set on doing other things besides eating and counting calories...  plus the fact that when you start losing weight by counting calories at the same time  the skin is exersizing  and going down.. so loose skin no more..... your toning it baby.... =0) I hope that helpsCool

The weight loss is much slower but you will loose. I was loosing maybe about 1 to 2 lbs per week while excersising then I stopped and I am loosing only 1 per month maybe or less :0( Planning on starting again soon it has so many other advantages besides weight loss.
Adding exercise allows you to eat a little more (which helps keep many of us sane), it gives you countless health benefits (lungs, heart, muscles, bones, etc), and it makes it more likely that when you get to your goal weight you will really look nice.  The people who seem to have the most issues with saggy skin and wobbliness in spite of how thin they are, are the ones who got thin on diet alone.

I lost 30 lbs last year in under four months without doing any exercising.  I just started eating about 200 calories or less for lunch and kept everything else in moderation.

I started exercising this year and have lost another 15 lbs (in 12 months), but I also lost about 4 inches, my resting heart rate is down 12 points to 48bpm, and I feel great!  I believe I lost fat and gained muscle (muscle weighs more than fat and is stored in different places).  So I'm not complaining.

I still have 20 or 30 lbs I could lose, but I'm not focused on it.  I am focused mostly on maintaining for the holidays right now.  :-)

Two things to consider:

  1. Running 3 miles 3 times per week burns about 1350 calories.
  2. Eating 1 ounce of Doritos with lunch every day adds 1300 calories.

Find the one food item you can do without every day. Then stop eating it.  Banish it.  And don't replace it.  Call it "running".

Then, go exercise.  Exercise is good for your heart.  Exercising will help you lose weight, but I like to exercise for me.  I watch my food to lose weight.

I've lost 30 pounds since I joined CC, and about 10 pounds before I joined.  I can't exercise because of medical issues that are unrelated to my weight.  I've had long stretches when I've been nearly bedridden.

I did it by using the tools and logging my food.  It's been very slow, but I'm gradually losing.  More importantly, I've learned new eating habits so I'll never have to diet again, because I'm eating the way I should.

I know if I could only exercise I'd lose much faster and would be able to eat more too.  I wish I could!

Like plenty of people said, you can lose weight without working out...but working out has soooooo many health benefits, and like Jme_ said, you can eat more if you work out! Plus when your working out, your helping tone your body and increasing your indurance. Working out helps improve things you do outside the gym too. Plus I find that I have sooo much more energy throughout the day if I start off with a morning jog or eliptical thingie.

Hope you find a good combination of both! ^^ Gewd luck!
My boyfriend is the laziest person you'll ever meet. All he did was cut his portions and watched what he ate. Oh, he gave up soda as well. Lost almost 100 pounds. He never works out.

I've lost 23 pounds since May, 2 pounds from my goal of 125. I haven't been good about working out. So yeah, calorie counting is effective even if you're not consistently working out.

So my next goal is to maintain and fit working out into my routine.

The most weight I ever lost was in the final year of my degree. I lost 7kg ( 15lb) and I didn't exercise at all. Interestingly I didn't really diet either. I started bringing my lunch with me to save money, and most days I would eat salad with no dressing (dressing goes yuk when you don't have a fridge) and share a basket of fries with sour cream and sweet chili with a friend. I also stopped drinking soda or pretty much anything but water (and a coffee or two). Lastly, I bought myself a pair of jeans, a pair of sneakers and a backpack. Not wonderfully stylish I know, but wearing sneakers and using my backpack meant that I wasn't worried about walking around the place because I was comfortable. So, it wasn't technically using calorie count, but it wasn't exercising either :)
I've lost weight without counting, and I've lost weight without exercising; however, I find that a combination of both proves most effective for me.

Something I'd like to add in favor of exercise is that, along with added health benefits, it helps keep me emotionally regular (if that makes sense), boosts my self-confidence, and allows me to physically express my exuberance (which is something I like to do -- lots of skipping, jumping, dancing & spontaneous sprints in the course of my daily life.)

You can lose weight without working out. Often when someone drastically reduces calories without exercise they are not only losing fat but muscle. In my opinion it makes more sense to look at measurements and the way clothes fit rather than just the scale. By exercising you are increasing your basal metabolic rate. I believe it's for every extra pound of muscle you gain you burn 50 calories per day so it can increase the rate at which you lose weight. Additionally, fat has more volume per pound than muscle. Working out isn't always fun, particularly the first few times back at it, but the sense of accomplishment and increase in energy are infectious and help keep you motivated which translate into weight loss success.
I've lost 20lbs so far, but my body has changed so much. I fit into clothes I couldn't wear even when I was 10lbs lighter than I am now. I have developed so much more muscle, and its changing the way my body looks, not just my weight. This means I can actually look like I weigh less than I do. I do count calories, but weight training has really made the difference in the way I look.

Just counting calories, I lost weight but it come back so quickly I couldn’t believe it. Now I count calories and workout.  Some days I don’t log the calories then I’ll go back to that date to see how bad I did on that date and find that I’m very much aware of my calorie intake even when I don’t log them, but keep on logging and keep on working out.  This is the rule for a long andhealthy life.I’ve lost 49lbs using the calorie counting website alone.  I found also that I had too much flab and had to start working out.  Working out gets rid fatigue and stress.  It also helps you keep the weight off in the long run.

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
  1. Plot your weight curve
  2. Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
  3. Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
