is 1200cal enough for workout days?

Quote  |  Reply

i started my excercise/diet routine about 2 months ago (mid-august) and until now i have managed to lose around 16 pounds. i am a 22 yr old male 5'7" and 148 pounds. i eat ard 1200 cals a day, but my question is if it is ok to only eat 1200 cals on those days when i burn ard 300-500 cals working out or doing cardio? or is that unhealthy?

edit:

i had another question too, if i cannot reach my daily vitamin and fiber requirements thru my food qouta are vitamin/fiber supplements as effective as "real" food?

According to standard health regulation you need to consume 1200 daily to keep your nutritional value up enough to sustain you body through every day events.  Now i look at it like this, do you feel tired when you get done working out???

I am currently get over an injury right now and it was due to me not stay on top of my vitamins while still working out on a 1200 calorie diet.  Its not BAD for you but don't be to strict.  Realize that you can eat more calories the days you workout.  Try adding in a snack right after you train, like a hand full of trail mix or a good protein shake that has VERY LITTLE sugar.

I cant say that is BAD for you but you must realize that eating only 1200 calories will limit what you eat.  You will only have a small window of what you can eat thus you must eat the RIGHT things or it will be harmful for your body.  It would be better to eat 1300 to 1500 calories on days you workout just so you dont risk hurting yourself...

I hope this has helped!

The minimum calorie intake for males for basic organ function and what not is 1500-1800 so you shouldn't be going under 1500 even after your exercise.
As stated above 1500 is the minimum for men. Yes I think you should probably consume a bit more on workout days, if you are eating the minimum and then burn a couple hundred calories at the gym, it puts you under...plus just the fact your muscles are working that day they really need the nutrients to function, repair and grow. Supplements aren't as good as the real thing but certainly are important with calorie deficit because chances are you aren't getting enough vitamins and minerals.

thanks for your replies guys! that was a lot of help.

and answering the first question,

ya i do kinda feel quite tired after like 30mins of working out and my head starts to hurt for some reason (kinda sharp pain). could it be related with insufficient calorie consumption?
