How do I calculate calories in a fried corn tortilla?

Quote  |  Reply

I allowed my self a little treat tonight...I made homemade ground turkey tacos! I did have a fried white corn tortilla shell though and can not figure out how to calculate the calories in it! Any body have any idea how much of the oil sticks in the tortilla?

Depends on the diameter.  A 6" tostada (flat fried corn tortilla) is 50 calories.

Hard to tell because temperature effects the amount of oil absorbed. If you really wannt to know you can do a test by weighing one before and after cooking. It will be a little off do to evaporation of water in the tortlla but close enough. What I do is spray the tortilla with cooking spray and then cook in a dry pan. That is enough oil to make it crispy with minimal calories.

thanks tim207! I never thought of spraying and cooking it to get that yummy crispy texture! Great idea!

I just picked up that idea from somewhere recently. Whoever gave me the idea to spray things is owed a huge thank you but I don't know where I got it. I have also used this on lightly breaded fish. I love crunchy fried food and this lets me enjoy it more often.

Sometimes I just want that crispy taco only oil can give (for me), so I measure out a teaspoon of oil into a small fry pan and get it real hot then drop one or two corn tortillas one at a time into the pan. Then I just add the oil to my cc along with the tortilla(s).
