calculations for a week

Quote  |  Reply

hello,

ok i just finished doing 30 mins on my gazelle at 250 calories.... now i know you need to burn 3500 calories a week to lose 1lb. so i am calculating that I would need to burn 500 calories 7 days a week for this to happen. i already know for me that is no possible, more realisticly I am able to do 30 mins 4-5 times a week....

so my question is... say i did min 4 days a week... that is 1,000 calories a week... how can I minus the other 2500 from food during the week ?? is that possible ? i good idea, what ??

 thanks for any help....

3500 calorie deficit can be a combination of exercise and lower caloric intake for the week.  So if you do 1000 in exercise and reduce your daily caloric intake by 215, you can achieve the same results.

yes, BUT my daily calories is around 12-1400.... so I would assume on my 1200 cal days to not do this, correct ?

Is there a rule of thumb as to the amount of calories we burn each day? For example, each morning, my burn meter reads 2500 calories and goes up with activity. So does everyone burn 2500 a day?
Is your estimate of 1200-1400 calories to LOSE a pound a week, or is that the number to maintain your weight?  Because if that's the estimate to lose the weight, and you are adding exercise, then you will need to eat MORE, not less.

Yes, it is to lose weight... more at the 1200 calories range.... so I shoud be eating MORE to lose ? Also, I forgot about the calories being burned just being alive....

when you exercise you need calories, energy, carbs, ect to lose weight. don't be afraid to eat carbs when you are active! you need them or you will have no energy! trust me!

I am a waitress, two jobs, and i have a gym pass. I try to go 3 times a week to the gym at least. on average i burn 3700 calories a day (from being alive, sleeping, sex, working, working out, i live upstairs, ect.), and eat 1400-1600 calories a day. that leaves me with a daily burn of  around 2100-2300 a day! (so in about 2 or 3 days, i lose a pound, seems that has been correct and healthy for me but is case by case and i would say the MAXIMUM weight loss).

dont forget other activies other then machines with counters burn calories, and remember that when you work out, you need things to burn. Cars don't run on empty tanks either! Carbs in moderation, don't cut them out completely, find veggies that give you the most for your buck, and remember to drink no more then 64 oz. of water a day, or you will will retain water. (that is 4 16 oz water bottles, or 8 8 oz glasses, ect.)

I am a very active person, a work a holic, and i sword fight and wrestle. I can't live on less calories then i intake, becuase i need something to burn off, remember that.

3500 = 1 pound of fat

2000 is the average diet intake

1200 is for inactive persons  but you need 1200+ to burn anything at all! your body can go into starvation mode and you wont burn only store!

1500 is a good average, but realistically try for 1600 at tops! remember as you lose weight make adjustments, the first 10 pounds are the easiest to lose, then you have to re-eval your plan to adjust for the next 10! that is what i am doing right now, just lost 13 in 3.5 weeks, and now i am re-evaluating my diet as i have stayed at the same weight for 1 full week with no change. good luck!

Hi, Sephora,

In your post you are asking about how to burn 3500 calories per week to lose one pound. Here is an explanation to clarify how it works.

You don't necessarily need to subtract those calories from what you are already eating.   You need to subtract those calories from the total that you burn. That includes what you burn from just being alive, plus what you burn from exercise and other activities.

You can figure out what you burn by using the tools on this site. In the menu, click on tools, and then "burn meter." In your profile and other posts, you say you are 32 yo, 5'2", 165.  So you would burn 1800 calories if you sat on the couch all day.  Plus, you burn an average of 143 calories per day doing exercise (1000 calories / 7 days).  So you burn an average of 1943 calories per day.

In order to lose 1 lb per week, you need a daily deficit of 500 calories (3500 calories / 7 days).  So, you need to eat 1440 calories per day to lose 1 lb per week.

Does this explanation help?

yes that explanation helped a lot, thanks. so i need to eat a little bit MORE than I am to lose weight..... I kind of thought maybe that's what it was... I will try it out at 1400 calories a day and see what happens.

 thanks again.
