Calf pain help!

Quote  |  Reply

I've been trying to get some cardio in lately by jogging or power walking, but I get this crippling pain in my calves, almost like charlie horses or i don't know. It's so bad, but I know that I need to start doing more cardio to start seeing some drastic results. I can also get the same feeling from wearing sky high stilletos, which I will be in a wheelchair before I stop wearing my heels, but this is really bad. so please please tell me something to make it stop.

If it's muscle pain, heating pad and pain killers. Try elevating your calves too with the heating pad on them. That has got to be one of the worst pains to have. Hope you feel better soon!

It could be shin splints. Go see your doctor and she'll either prescribe a brace or show you some stretches to help the pain.

Shin splints wouldn't cause pain in the calves. The first time I really did a serious calf workout, I had excruciating pain for days. I could literally barely walk. That is the ONLY time they ever hurt that bad though. The muscles are small so one intense workout can really break them in.

thank you, but how do i work through it and continue working out?

Take a few days off from jogging and try elliptical/swimming/something that doesn't cause as much 'pounding' but would still give you the same cardio benefit. Make sure you do calf streches too and I would also focus on doing some resistance training for your calves- i.e. calf raise machine, etc.

ugh yeah isn't it the worst? I usually walk or run but the other day I decided to run up and down the stairs for like 30 minutes and my calves are dead. I'd give you advice but as mine still hurt I can't really help :L

Stretch before you start, and make sure to eat bananas or something else rich in potassium and drink lots of water to stave off muscle cramps.

Get a potassium supplement from the drugstore or health food store and take it as directed with a large glass of orange juice.  You'll notice a difference in a few days.  I was having the same issues and my dr. suggested this since I don't like bananas, I haven't had any problems since I started doing this.  Smile

TheMonBon is correct.  Sounds like you need some potassium majorly.  This can be effectively taken care of just by eating a banana.  No supplements really needed.. well unless you dont dig bananas.

Hope you got rid of your cramps, I know exactly what your talking about.. And boy do they hurt!  Another thing you can try doing just to alleviate the pain is massaging the back of your leg all the way up to the back of the knee, rubbing around the calf area will loosen things up, and rubbing behind the knee gets your circulation going.  Also obviously, no matter what exercise your doing, always stretch beforehand.

My younger brother was experiencing calf pain lately also and he saw a podiatrist.. turns out he is a 'toe-walker' and this has lead to pain in his calves..

hehe i wouldnt give up my heels either but definately make an appointment to see a podiatrist tho and get it checked out.

Good luck! Sammy

I sometimes have pain in front of legs/calves when doing high impact activities like running and jumping. I found some shoes that are designed for women with wide forefoot and narrow heels - Ryka - and I combine those with shock absorbing socks (Thorlo). I also examined where I tend to strike my foot when walking, running, and jumping and made some adjustments. I've had good results.

Go to the doctor to make sure you have no blood clots

if you have been dieting lately, and it's in the back of your calf muscle, I know what you're talking about. I used to get spasms in the middle of the night, not be able to move from my knee down because of it.. like a charlie horse.

Apparently it has something to do with malnutrition, like your not get enough.. potasium?? maybe?? I don't know if that's what it is I can't remember but maybe someone will see this and go "OH YEAH" and actually know what thier talking about lol.

it potassium deficiency. you can get this several ways

over exercising or low-cal diets (less than 800cals a day) usually cause this. get a supplement or develop a taste for bananas. you should feel better in about 2-3 days.

good luck!

I think the other posters answered the question well, but I just wanted to add that potatoes are an excellent source of potassium, even better than bananas!!

Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?

In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
