Callanetics - ever heard of 'em?
Callanetics were popular in the 80's, but STILL rule. They are my
secret exercise weapon. They are very controlled movements that
work your muscles SO deeply, they pull you IN very, very quickly.
I actually believe I owe my full size drop in 2 weeks to them.
Anyways - I think the only way to find these now is on DVD. The books are good for explaining the story, theory, etc...but for me the video instructions were key to learning how to do them well. Ebay or Amazon is a good source, I think. I have done them on and off for years, but now I'm gonna be doing them at least twice a week for the rest of my life. TRY THEM! Z

Oh, my mother has an old Callanetics book that I used to use when I was in high school. I remember her using the book when I was a little kid too - so funny! I still do some of the stretches & when I do crunches I use that style but I haven't seen the book for years - maybe I should pick it up next time I visit!
Yep! Back in high school my friend and I used to work out to her mom's Callanetics VHS...we were trying to get in shape for the big dance team tryouts. I find they are good for working core muscles and almost, almost yoga/pilates like in nature. I still love using her lower back stretch.
I have a book or two on this, but I can see how the DVD would be a better teacher. I need to "pull in" very quickly because when I have results I stay with all my healthy body goals better.
Oh yeah - that lower back stretch is heavenly! I always, every
time I do the hour wish that THAT was the last one. It's so
relaxing....having to get up and do the pelvics just sucks. P-)
I bought the dvd from amazon and i recieved it in the mail monday and i am still sore! it was a really nice work out, i sweated, i stretched and more than anything i felt really strong afterwards. I think this is something i might be able to stick with.
I use to do callanetics then I moved in bodyweight strength resistanse ,some yoga and stretching ,anymove is great.
Once again I must be the advocate of Callanetics! OMG I feel so
good and strong. I'm at that point where my flab is MORE obvious
because the muscle is pulling in so nicely underneath - regardless, it
feels SO good. I know I am pulling in ever so tight. And
it's more than physical - I always end up feeling extremely centered,
sometimes even having reallly deep inner insights. Today I had the
latter. Something about them makes me connect with myself and get
to parts of me I've repressed for eons. Sounds scary? Nah,
it's liberating. Today I actually had an 'inner child' moment and
cried and cried. That's a good thing!
One recommendation - don't buy SuperCAllanetics until you have at least 30 hours of the original 1 hour program (I think it's being sold as 10years younger in 10 hours, nowadays). I know the old (UK at least) version used to need a hanging bar, etc. The tape I later got and program I use does NOT. You don't need anything except floor space and something to put your leg on. As you can see in the tape, a coffee table, couch, or bed will do. Personally I use my couch or bed for everything. I use the corner wall for the first leg excercises. Oh, a floor mat is nice.
Sermon over! Z

In the early '90's, I took a callanetics class that was held in a ballet studio. Barres, mirrors, mats ... it was lovely! I'm glad to know it's out on DVD. Must pick up a copy ...
Sounds like they would help with flexibility & range of motion...
I love callanetics!!!!!!!!! Im going to start up again soon, and plan on doing it everyother day. I'll take measurements before and each month after. Maybe I'll post any progress here (or in my profile)
It totally works, its great for your jawline too!!! Like Callan says "its like meditation in motion" Some people say its too slow - but, if you focus, and breathe - time flys by.

I am doing the callanetics. I am on my 6th time for the 10 years younger in 10 hours. I am 36 pounds overweight and am short. so i look pretty funny trying to bend. I am 58 years old and did this in my 30's. it works. i love doing it. i have a large middle and can already see some form taking place in this short time. I of course can't do a 100 of each. i just do want i can. i am sure that if I could do as many repetitions that they do i would see even more results. but this works.
cindy
this is awesome, i am a believer for sure. congradulations. are you doing them every day?
