I was called fat by a complete stranger!

so heres the story-I have always had big calves, everyone in my family has huge calves and none of the girls in my family has ever been able to fit in normal boots. I decided to be brave and go to a shoe store to find some chic black boots and I found some that actually managed to go up my leg...and zip! a great victory for women in my family. So i started talking to my mom about how great this is since no boots ever fit us.  While my moment of amazement was still going on, some tall girl not much heavier than me (only with thin calves) prances over and shes wearing the same boots. She turns to her boyfriend (while I'm telling my mom how boots never fit me) and she says "are these boots too big on my legs?" and her boyfriend says shes silly and then she looks at me while still talking to her boyfriend and says "I think they're made for fat people" and they both start laughing!!! I really don't understand why they did that. It was so rude and the part that hurts the most is that I never even said anything to her or even looked at her oddly yet she does this to me! also, I don't even think im fat! Sure I can lose a few pounds here and there but its nothing to be called fat over. I'm 5'3 and 119lbs and pretty active! I personally just don't understand it. But of course, being like any person it hit hard and I was just embarassed and overall ashamed of myself and I still can't get over the comment, even though it was said indirectly to me. 

Has anything ever happened to you that was similar to this instance?

I guess I would have said to my friend..(while looking at said girl) and commented..."Wow...they sell boots that fit stupid people?"

She was a creep. Don't let the creeps get to you !

What an ignorant b*tch that girl was! If you are 119 and 5'3 you are in NO WAY fat. I weigh more then you at the same height..Had I heard that girl I would have gave her the finger. I would have taken off the boots (but gotten them later) and said "Nah, I don't need these it looks like hookers are trying them on." lmao..I like Monarch's comment about stupid people or say "Man, I guess ignorant people can fit into these too..since all the fat is in their heads."

Don't let it get you down there are some really ignorant people out there.

Speaking as someone who is grandmother age...........your picture is beautiful and I am sure you are anything but fat according to your height and weight.  I would feel sorry for that rude person who obviously is missing something that isn't weighed.................kindness, politeness, thoughtfulness.  Be happy that you are not lacking in the above characteristics.  These kind of people often end up in situations that you would not choose.  Nice people come in all different shapes and sizes .........but aren't you lucky your shape and size is just about right and that your spirit is just about right also!

I must admit but I've done something kinda like that. A long time ago, I worked with a boyfriend of mine and there was a really good looking girl that we worked with. She was actually a nice person though so it wasn't like I hated her. But, one time we were in the bathroom at the same time and when I came out I said to my boyfriend that "she really stunk up the joint". See, I wanted to erase any thoughts that he might have had about her. Same kind of thing that I think happened to you. It's really stupid and childish..........

yes people have said stuff similar at me, but you know what you did the right thing by not reacting it said a lot more about them than it ever will about you try and let it pass, not easy i know but one day it will come back and bite her on the bum!

That girl is a pathetic, insecure creature who can only feel good when she insults other people.  I bet she saw how good you looked and just had to cut you down in front of her boyfriend to try to look good to him.  Feel sorry for her. 

At your weight, big calves would be strong, muscular calves - very sexy!

damn.....when I was in highschool a group of guys (and their girlfriends) walked by me and really loudly said "I hate fu****g blondes!"  I was mortified then realized it was all a show for the girlfriends!!!!  I laugh now-but it wasn't so funny then.

You all are so nice and thank you so much for making me feel better. I feel so dumb now for letting that girl bring me down. On a much brighter note, I bought my boots and I will sport them with pride!

yesterday was my 1st day of work at my 1st job and while walking in the hall a woman stopped me and asked if i was pregnant and when i was due, yea...

I can only echo what people have said; clearly she is a stupid, shallow creature who is insecure in comparison to how glowing and lovely you look. Go muscular legs! Don't feel down. :D

I don't understand why people feel the need to comment so viciously other than to make themselves feel good - and that then just shows how pitiful they are.

To take a different perspective, she could have just happened to look at you while saying that, maybe to check that you're not fat so that it would be (less not) OK to say that aloud. Or maybe her eyes happened to wander towards you? No sane person could possibly think you're fat or call you fat.

I think that she didn't even notice you and is simply clueless.  I did something similar years ago:

I had lost 20 lbs. in 4 weeks from ephedrine and went from a size 12 to a size 8.  I was at a baseball game with my family and proud of my weight loss and I said something like, "I can't believe I was a size 12!"  Sitting right in front of me was a porker who probably was a size 14 or 16 and as soon as the words were out of my mouth, I noticed her and felt like a complete ass.  She probably went home and told everybody that a total stranger called her fat...

First, I want to say that the girl was rude.

Second, I want to say I feel your pain regarding big calves.  I have never been able to buckle ski boots around my calves.  My husband actually found extenders to attach to the buckles so I can actually buckle a pair of ski boots. 

Nothing I do reduces them.

 I agree with both of these comments.  And Congrats on your maturity for not responding to this girls rudeness.  And guess what, they are making all sorts of new styles for "musular calved girls"  Yeah!  Go Power legs.  Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I LOVE cowboy style boots for this exact reason.  No prob with the fit!

People can be so ugly and rude.. I hope you got those boots, because I know you can make them look better than she can. Surly! He had to take the heat off of himself for a moment, because if he would have saw you alone.. He would have hit on you anyway.. Guys can be jerks in front of the other woman, and then turn right around when she isn't looking and ask for your number... He's a jerk, and we all know it. As for her...

She just shallow and dumb....

I'm sorry you had to be hurt by her stupid comment.  I've got big calves too and often have trouble finding a pair of boots that will zip over them.  Even when I do they are tight. 

Please take pleasure in the fact that you didn't bother to respond.  It really shows sophistication on your part.  Time will pass and it won't hurt so much.  Enjoy your boots!!
