calling out to women 50+

Quote  |  Reply

I'd like to start this thread specifically for women who are 50 or over.

As a 53 year-old woman, myself, I am finding new challenges, unexpected difficulties and wonderful insights on my path to getting to and maintaining my health, weight and body shape.

What seemed to work for me as little as five years ago doesn't work quite the same anymore. My body doesn't seem to respond to what I consider healthy eating habits and good workout schedules as it even in my middle to late 40s'.

SO, I am would to hear from those out there who are finding themselves in situations. OR NOT, maybe you can enlighten the rest of us as to how you keep your shape, or how you're getting into better shape and a healthier overall lifestyle.

Hopefully this will be the start of something wonderful, educational, funny-offer up jokes anecdotes, whatever!

LET'S GET STARTED!

Carol: That was also what i was thinking when i suggested the letter A,B,C, game, it will give us an opportunity to learn about some different foods there values and what foods are good for us, protein and vit rich too of course, try and find some foods for Bonton there....maybe even a recipe slid here and there!  Green beans has Vit K too eh" interesting.

Why did our moms serve us those nasty out of the can mushy, tasteless green or worse wax beans..yuk, i love em fresh the only time i may use something from a tin is out of desperation, not in season and need it for a stew or something....but i like crisp N fresh!!

robbieWhen hubby and I went to visit SD in DC we ate at a place called the Majestic - you can look it up online they have a website - anyways - we ordered a beet and goat cheese salad! Oh it was soooo yummy - LOL I like beets! I just bought goat cheese to try and duplicate the salad.

carol Oh my lots of nutrients in green beans but I don't like them at all - LOL made veggie soup and put in a bag of mixed soup veggies - when I eat the soup I pick out all the green beansLaughing Wow I can't believe you don't watch tv - probably much better for you but I am addicted to a few shows LOL I love TBL and American IdolWink Photography class sounds interesting! And even if you don't believe it LOL I am a better eater than I used to be so you can imagine I ate only a limited amt of foods!

phox - I hate the planks too - I think I have weak wrists and shoulders! When we went out for dinner NY's eve I got a Tuscan trio - one of the dishes was eggplant rolled up with ricotta cheese inside and a marinara sauce - it was yummy! I'd like to try to duplicate that recipe and see I actually like eggplant! I do a lot of arm exercises sitting on the ball - helps strengthen your core while working the arms - good for golf!Cool

Bex - My favorite bean was one my mother used to make - butter limas with ham broth and lots of white sugar because they were sweet! I like baked beans too but I doctor them up with ketchup and brown sugar!

Beth So relieved that the delivery is over for your former apprentice. Now if she can get that stone out without any complications - I will continue to pray for her

snow We'll probably go out for dinner for my b-day too! I felt funny at first when I joined the gym but don't feel that way anymore!

BEB Oh geez I don't think I need to exercise at all anymore after reading your post LOLWink...but I don't DO all those things LOL but I've polished a lot of apples since I eat one every day!

Made it thru level 1 of Jillian today - did much better today - but I have decided that my wrists and shoulders need more strength. I did manage to do 10 boy push-ups before I had to wimp out and do girl push-ups. She does them for a minute! doesn't sound like a long time but when you're doing them it is an eternity! Asked hubby what exercises I needed to do to get that "cut" at the top of my arm like Jillian has - he told me we're not that young we can't get there - to that i say well I can try!!! Will have to research exercises - maybe look at BEB's site for shoulder cap - already do physical therapy exercises for wrists. Bad elbow = weak wrist and forearm - that's what causes tendinitis in the elbow. Got an A on eating today and have really stayed at the 1200 cal rangeSmilehope it changes the scale.

Angel loves another "A" i know we're at B now but i just thought it was worth mentioning....A= Alfalfa sprouts, i can't have a salad anymore without Angel jumping up on the kitchen window/diningroom ledge looking for his share...lolTongue out

Edit" Bonny thats funny you mentioned duplicating a salad i am doing the same thing today with this Asian island crunch dressing by Dole came with the salad in a bag..ginger/sesame seed oh my gosh this is heaven!!!!!!!!!!..I love salad varieties....never eat the same dressing for more then a week then switch!!Tongue out

Yes Bonny the shoulder is in that website exercise routines i showed you!!It has every part of the upper body and back there, and calves, legs etc too!!

Speaking of american idol Carrie Underwood won 3 awards last night, song, artist and under 35 new category!!  Love her new song...!! "Paradise city"

EDIT: OLD AGE:  Some people view old age as the end of the road, there is still so much we don't know and need to learn, and to tell someone who is 65 that they by mandate have to retire, is just ridiculous to say the least, but once us the baby boomers get there, there will be a whole new concept on old age i would even go so far as to say "Old age is in it's infancy!! at the present!!

Any views??

Girls: Just wanted you all to know since i have been corresponding with clairlaine through journals for over a year now that she was taken to hospital with congested heart failure.....and has been gone for 2 days.  Well i am happy to report she is home, at this point that is all any of us know, spoiled candy and several others were worried and didn't know how to reach her as she posts every single day and when she hadn't for a couple it sent up a flag......i had recommended to her other friends on here that maybe being a mediator that maybe she had left her number with another mediator or someone, i don't know??

I do have a suggestion though perhaps if they set up a section where we can log our telephone numbers for emergency, and only the people on a list (like the pricacy filter) list you personally set up say on our own site then if there is an emergency someone can at least call, i do worry and actually have thought about that myself..what if??  If that is to much trouble for them maybe 2 members of the group could have the list of #'s to be used only in emergency, it would have to be 2 because if the person with the list has an emergency how would anyone else get the numbers.  Personally i have no problem with any of you regulars having my number.....what do you all think?????????...beb

Hi Every one!

Thanks for all the support, it is nice to hear. Today was a great day again, I made my lunch for work and stuck to the program and drank all the water I was supposed to.

Moon those exercises look tuff, I belong to a gym too, my problem is finding the time to get there. I love free weights, your exercise where the weight is above your head do you start with the weight at your side?

My B word for food today is brussel sprouts! Tiny cabbages I really love those!

I have a long way to go to catch you all in the work out area as well as food choices I am glad you like to share, I learn something new everyday.

It is nice to see other golfers here too, I am soooooo bad but still have fun! Curt and I play on a couples league in the summer. It is called hit and giggle league. It is just for fun and always a team effort. Sometimes the name of the game could be divorce, some folks take the game so serious. I am never going to play with Tiger or Phil so I just want to have fun.

Isn't that a song girls just wanna have fun? I can't remember who sang that but it would be a good them song for me.

I would love to share low cal recipes I need to dig out all my cook books I remember having some really great recipes in them. Something else I can do on the week-end. My weeks are so busy with Renee and her  stuff and my job and husband and dog I forget about me sometimes. Curt told me he would be willing to take Renee sometimes but I am such a Mom I want to make sure everything goes right. I am sure he could handle it hmm maybe I just like the control :>)

We seem to be in a heat wave in Oregon next week we are going to be up to 55 degrees!! For us that is a heat wave this time of year. And we are not supposed to get any rain.

So it is almost my bed time so I should go take care be safe and strong!

Star:Isn't that a song girls just wanna have fun? I can't remember who sang that but it would be a good them song for me.

Answer: Cyndi Lauper...great song sing it all the time......."girls just wanna have fun....!!

Oh anytime you don't know the lyrics or a song title go to google just enter the ............song xxxxx and it will come up or if you know the line of a song................enter...........lyrics xxxxx....of course i love cyndi lauper so i didn't have to look, i download music all the time so anything you want to know, i also have 450 albums, 300 45's 300 cassettes and 1300 songs on Mp3 we................!!  Not bragging girls just stating a fact.......More info than you needed i have so much energy today...Sealed..earlier:

i walked over to the store to get more salad bags yes Asian Island Crunch (love the dressing) ginger/sesame seed, comes with pinapple, almonds, just try it girls......and dressing for the weekend, you girls would have laughed your head off.  I thought okay i am going to climb this hill on the way back trying not to be a wimp instead of walking all the way around, had a bag of groceries got about half way up the hill and slippery i started sliding back, so it was like 10 feet up slide 4 feet back, well i did this about 5 times, threw the bag up to the top just lettuce and grabbed whatever i could, the darn root let go and i slid about 15 feet back down, i finally made it but i used about 100 calories in any case i was proud that i did the challenge instead of wimping out, if i was 197lbs there is no way i would have made it, my own little personal challenge today, was fun though, the snow is so pretty tonight and "i was walking in the snow", about 1/2-3/4 of a mile or so there and back...

I am sorry i am so yappy tonight...anyway have a good sleep "C" tomorrow!!

Oh and for those who want to WEIGH IN TOMORROW!!!!....

that's what happens when you use rechargeable batteries on the energizer bunny!!!!....hehehe..lolSurprised

First, prayers for clairlaine. How frightening.

C - Canola oil, full of multiunsaturated fatty acids.

I read all the posts yesterday (until 5 PM my time) but didn't have time to respond. Our ON company arrived 3 hours early so I barely walked in the door after work when the doorbell rang. Turns out he'd told DH that he'd be here ~6 but DH never updated me. Grrr. I was ready to run to the grocery store so he was lucky to have caught me! I wanted to make something regional for dinner (he's from KY) so I made chicken & waffles. Is that something you have in your area or does it sound bizaar? If you're not familiar with it and it sounds gross, keep in mind the waffles aren't really sweet.

Love the letter of the day idea, it does help me think of new things to try or ways of preparing old favorites. I need to think of a good beef dish to make for dinner that isn't real sensitive to timing. Our guest brought a nice bottle of cabernet and I want to complement it. Any suggestions? I'd like it to be something less homey than last night's but I also don't want to be over my head! lol.

Weigh-in: LOL! The scale said 127.5 this morning!!! Only seven pounds less than yesterday so I'm sure it's accurate ---NOT. Oh well, time for new batteries most likely. I hope it hasn't just gone squirrelly on me.

We've talked a lot about belly fat on here. While I was at a doc's office yesterday I read about a study in Prevention magazine that really seemed to indicate that a Mediterranean type diet reduces internal belly fat (the dangerous kind.) They showed before & after MRI's that were pretty convincing. Their version is the Flat Belly Diet. The heart of it is multiunsaturated fatty acids (MUFA's): certain oils, nuts and seeds, avocado,  olives, and chocolate (woohoo).  The 'diet' calls for 1600 cals which would cause weight loss for most people anyway (evidently not some of us, though!! lol.)  While I'm certainly not interested in buying the book, I thought I might try and incorporate more of those foods in our meals. DH has a very large belly and it worries me a lot. I can't make him diet & exercise but I can change our food some. It sounds like things we like anyway. Check  HERE  for the foods.

that post was awesome, beb!  LOL  now, that's MY kind of exercise...  man!  you guys all workout like beasts!  i gotta start catching up around here.  one armed planks, boot camp, jillian, lunges across a backetball court with weights...  you guys must be really strong!  geez...  maybe you guys don't eat enough with all that work you do...  :D

i only like fresh green beans anymore, too.  well, fresh or frozen.  i used to buy the cans all the time, but never anymore.  that's a great idea about everyone eating at least one of these foods from the game everyday, too!

geez...  i'm drooling here...  i wish my hubby would go walking with me again sometime.  maybe by springtime he will.  who knows.  it's like you all said, at least i'm setting a good example for him.  i think he really wants what i have, but he don't want to put down the food!

last night, i got up & went into the kitchen.  i saw the biscuits i had just bought & i wanted one real bad.  hubby had already had 3 & they're really big, too!  i thought about it...  picked up the carton, opened it...  AND smelled them.  LOL  then i closed it & put it down.

then, i looked at that delicious coffee cake that i had bought earlier.  everyone else had already had some.  they even topped it with the 16 oz cool whip that i just bought.  ok, so i opened the box, turned to grab a knife, and then...  i grabbed a spoon instead & just scooped up some of the crumbs that had fallen off when they all took their slices.

OK, then i opened the fridge & saw the new salad i had just bought for the stinking lizard.  yeah, for the lizard...  MY salad is only $1 & hers is $2 and only 1/2 the salad.  i pulled that out of the fridge & thought about how she can only eat like 1/2 of the container (if even!) before it gets old & i have to toss it.

so, i opened it up & started picking through it & eating the kinds that she doesn't even like.  hubby actually heard me eating!  LOL  he came practically running in to see what he was missing out on & it was salad!!!  you should have seen his face!!!  :D

yeah, that was pretty funny...  NO, he didn't have any.  even after eating all kinds of stuff already, he HAD to eat again because someone else in the house was eating.  he grabbed another biscuit & heated it up & made a nice ham sandwich with it.  later he still had ice cream & peanuts...  geez!

i love almonds, but not only do i count them out these days, but that's another food i hide when i buy it.  i won't eat them all, but i'd like to get at least ONE serving before hubby sees them & eats them all in one sitting.

i don't like beets or much of anything mentioned lately.  let's see...  i like apples, bananas & green beans.  :D

great job, star!  i have that song as a ring tone for when my daughter calls my cell.  oh no, that's right, i changed it to 'i wanna talk about ME'.  hehe  that's great weather you're having, too!  man...  i can only wish!

wow, beb!  LOL  that was pretty funny...  and you didn't get hurt, right?

Good morning!  Starhr, in the exercise you mentioned, the weight goes from about ear level (with a bent arm) to overhead with a straight arm.  In the lower position, my fingers are pointing backward, then I rotate my arm as I lift the weight so that my fingers are pointing forward at the top.  It is also important to tighten your whole body so that only your arm is moving and you are standing up straight, not leaning to one side.  My trainer gets after me about that a lot Smile

The side plank with one leg in the air is a fairly advanced exercise.  You need to start out with both legs on the floor and hold the position for longer and longer amounts of time, up to a minute or more.  I do all my planks on my forearm.  My wrist tends to get very sore too, if I bend it for any of these exercises.  And that will make my elbow flare up, too, like Bonton's.  But everything can be worked around to a certain extent.

My Jillian DVD might be here today, or maybe Monday.  Can't wait to try it out!  I found that I can listen to her weekly radio program from her website.  I'm listening to it right now, and she is telling a caller that it is virtually impossible to overtrain when you have a lot of fat to lose.  It is only for you 5 or 10 pounders that it becomes a problem, according to Jillian.

Chris, in that belly fat study, what kind of a diet did they use for comparison?  I would think that any weight loss diet would reduce belly fat.

So far this morning I have had 340 calories and right now I feel full.  Hopefully it will last since it included 24 grams of protein.  My sleep was interrupted last night (my own fault since I fell asleep at 7:00 and had to get up at 11 pm to do my chores, feed animals, etc.)  I got back to sleep at 1:50 and got up at 5:30.  This is NOT good for helping me eat less.  I'll try again tonight to get all my stuff done before I go to sleep.

Alice

Is Friday still our weigh in day? I am not thrilled to report that I am up to 124.8; although that is 1.2 lbs. less than last week, it's 1.4 more than where I was in beginning of December. It is also 10 pounds more than when I moved to Colorado in 1997. Frown

Bad news about Clairelane. Let me know if anyone finds out more.

C is for cabbage. I have a really great recipe for an Asian slaw that is easy to make, but requires a bit of chopping. Maybe you can get to it if you go to:

http://caloriecount.about.com/asian-slaw-reci pe-r23589

but I haven't been able to follow Beth's suggestions on how to insert a link.

Peg: I caught smoke smell, but am about 10 miles from the fire evacuation area. Thanks for asking. I wish I could work out at work, but there's no place to clean up, and my schedule isn't really conducive with a lunch hour break--I usually end up slamming something down in about 5 minutes and going back to my case. Yeah, I know, not the healthiest way to do it, but since I bring in leftovers for lunch, at least it's good food I'm failing to appreciate.  Snow: Your salad choices are hilarious. You'll have to publish the Iguana Owner's Diet Manual! BEB: thanks for the laugh. I am a little down about my caseload, and your snow climbing adventure lifted my spirits. I don't watch reality TV (well, unless there's a writer's strike and I am desperate for "company" while cooking dinner), but I did think Jillian made a good exercise tape. Carol: I agree totally about the green beans, but confess to a secret weakness for canned asparagus--the really mushy stuff. But I love green beans sauteed in a bit of chicken broth till crispy tender, with tarragon (fresh) and Butter Buds. But, I also love them cooked till soft with bacon cut up and thrown in. And, I completely think you're on to a good approach when you say, "I need to find ways to make weight loss fun and sustainable.  Instead of focusing on what I shouldn't eat, I want to focus on all kinds of good things I should eat." What kind of camera are you using? I love my Kodak Easy Share because it's so . . . well,  easy, but I really covet a good digital SLR.  Bonnie: I have a recipe for a goat cheese, beet and maple dressing salad that I haven't tried yet. Once I do, let's compare notes. I do planks like Alice, on my forearms, and also on my side. If you do the side planks and lift your hips up toward the ceiling then back to neutral position, it really gets your external obliques. I also have a recipe for roasted chicken with Mediterranean vegetables (including eggplant) that you might like, and which fits in Chris's flat belly diet. But, I really need someone to teach me how to link you to my recipes or find them when submitted to CC. I can't figure it out. Star: I love brussels, too. Sounds like you have a great approach to golf. But, I suspect there's something to your question whether not letting Curt take Renee reflects on control needs. I found many times I should've shared the burdens of child-rearing more with Tom but didn't because I had a need to be needed and to feel like I was the only one who could do it "right." That's dangerous thinking. Not saying that's where you're at, just that it's something to monitor. Chris: 7 pounds! Send me that scale, with no new batteries! Lots of nutrition counsellors recommend some version of the Mediterranean diet, because it involves healthy oils, which make us feel satisfied and are heart friendly. I think your approach to helping DH reduce is perfect; just sneak in healthy food that tastes good  and he'll never know why he's suddenly losing belly fat. Of course, if his stress level is high, that's an issue you can't fix with diet, and that darn cortisol will make him hold on to toxic fat. There's a great book by Pamela Peake called, "Fight Fat after 40" that really addresses this issue, written with women in mind. Alice: From what I've read, any diet will reduce belly fat, but medical reviews on the Mediterranean diet say, "You can lose weight on The Flat Belly Diet plan, but don't be fooled into thinking MUFAs have magic belly-flattening nutrients capable of melting away belly fat. It is a calorie-controlled, Mediterranean-style diet plan that can help you lose weight in a safe and effective manner. The Mediterranean diet has been proven to be a nutritious and healthy plant-based plan that is good for your heart and overall health. What will melt body fat, including belly fat, is losing weight on a well-balanced plan like this one or any other healthy, calorie-controlled eating plan." I hope you get that sleep under control--Oprah says (per Dr. Oz) that we need 7 hours. Otherwise, we miss the Serotonin and crave unhealthy carbs. I'm rooting for you. Bex: Whatever has come over you sounds healthy, so keep it up! Beth: Your friend is lucky to have a healthy baby and a friend like you.

Best to all, Robbie

Good afternoon girls:

C =  Cabbage, 0 fat, 0 cholesterol, high in most all vits and filling, i like adding it to turkey stew they seem to complement each other and don't throw in corn beef, although the corn beef may be high in protein it is very high in fat and sodium, i find the turkey, cabbage and fresh vegetable is more then a healthy meal, and only 415 per 2 cup serving if you go that route.

Chris: How about just throwing some veggies into a pot throw in some stewing beef marinate that for about 3 hours a good hearty beef stew with tha wine should complement each other too!  Waffles and chicken hummm sounds like breakfast and dinner together....why not!  Hope your dinner goes well, did you say he's from Ontario? Where?  Wouldn't that be wonderful a scale that dropped 7 lbs, i guess 4 lbs  would be possible if you starting riding the moment you woke up and rode for all 24 hours...wow.

I also heard about MUFFA's, Chris I am already eating all those things on that list, pretty much and my belly is not flat,  i think these fad diets are just that!!...i think any short cut that gaurantees weight loss is bull, but i am all for eating the right things...except.....no more chocolate for me!!...at least not for a long time!!  lolUndecided..You know me, "everything in moderation"!

I have felt bloated the last few days and before that peeing alot so maybe all the sugar is finally out of my system, as i only started back on my weight loss, weights & workout program since xmas this past  Monday the 5th, i am happy thought to report:

Last week: 169lbs

THIS WEEK:166lbs

All that hard work boy...3 pounds, yeah, i'm happy...i will not say that was all water, because i am still feeling bloated, but i will not look a gift horse in the mouth...3lbs more to go to get back to where i was before that nasty xmas binging of chocolate, cheeses etc...

Snow: Yea come on snow get with the program..pun..(couldn't resist), you're, after all, "the baby" around here..then Chris then Me then all the 1954's...hehehe...we are eating just right snow!, come on girl get into the mood of it, put on some music like "I will survive", or "we are family", or "ain't no mountain high enough" like Alice over there (mountains), find a song that suits you and that will get you motivated and crank it!!..lol  If i tell you mine promise not to laugh.....lol

Snow you and your hubby kill me, reminds me of Brian (the good days), you feed off each other, (another pun), i'm just full of em eh, one of you gets the other going, Brian would eat everything at anytime, i actually had him at 6' down from 251 before marriage to 225 (told him i wouldn't marry him till he got down to 225 by the wedding day)..guess what he weighed on our wedding day!!...yup 225, of course throughout the marriage he was up and down i actually had him down to 208 at one point not for long though.  Today he weighs 370lbs has diabetes, and other health and knee problems etc...he was a truck driver, his last girlfriend was huge, anyway i don't think it matters if you eat at 7am or 8pm as long as you eat your calorie count.....so leave a couple hundred calories for the early evening for just that, i do, whether it's one of these great ideas i am getting from this game, or a fruit of some sort with protein and filling.  When it comes to nuts i weigh them, yes I WEIGH THEM, because back when i thought i was only eating 20g at 100 cals. i was actually eating 50g 320cals...quite a difference isn't it and the fat, i try to eat just a small handful at 20g per day, fills me and then i am not falling into my whole hunger habits...binging!!..I even have a salad if necessary....in the evening!!  I try not to eat after 8pm but those darn commercials, that's why i eat breakfast now, then i am not really hungry at night, my whole life i never ate breakfast, not as a youth, teen or young adult, so getting to do that was difficult, but i really enjoy that fiber1 with clusters and this morning i threw in a banana and just had half the recipe....yummy potassium!Tongue out

Well it's a gorgeous day today the sun is shining, -11C even Angel is lying in the sun by the window, i asked him if he is "anxious for spring and lying out on the patio watching the birdies"....and he went to the patio door looked up and outside the window, so he knows what i am saying.  Getting 5 minutes of rays through the window is as close as i can get to the beach at this time of year..heheCoollol

Oh i wanna talk about me Toby Keith, Kyle and i loved singing that song when it came out that was a few years ago, right?...no i didn't get hurt, it was 2 feet of snow to land in, but it must have looked funny to everybody on hwy 400 driving by this hill, i was beside the hwy i have to ride or walk over the bridge to get to my street Edgehill from no frills, when i talk to you all in the summer about that hill i finally conquered due to exercise fitness was that bridge hill, and Anne st which runs N-S is the name of it is the street that goes over the hwy goes on up for about a 1/2 mile, one day i would like to be able to ride all the way up it without stopping, that is my goal, but i have to really,  really.....REALLY.......REALLY !! BE IN GOOD SHAPE FOR IT, this is no **** hill, it's long like a ski hill and length about 1/4 mile-1/2 angle i would say 45-50* angle, so i have my 2010 goal...thanks Snow for giving me the idea, i don't think i can do it this year but i have a marker how far i made it up there last year 2 blocks..see if i can better that this year, I NEED TO WORK MORE ON CARDIO...my legs can handle it now,(couldn't say that in 2007), but more heart pumping workouts i need now, i also want to ride to Willow creek conservation area or Wasago beach this coming summer but there are a lot of hills....lol.Tongue out

2 years ago 2007 i rode to Innisfil beach (12 miles one way), (cabbed home flat tire)my first can i do it, challenge: Now i knew when i was a teen i rode 25mile bikathon, and at 16 a 26 mile walkathon but i wanted to see at 51 what i could do so as i said every year I devise a challenge, for the coming season, this year i want to ride to Fort Willow Creek Conservation area Historic Site, where they use to use to portage and carry war supplies during 1812, back and forth from Georgian Bay and Lake Simcoe out around Lake Ontario etc, with a railtrail, river and scenic nature route, iwould like to go with Kyle and maybe Rick, man does Rick have calf muscles....Arnold S. for sure there, (got to work on his belly though hehehe), anyway i don't think i will ever out ride him, rats....and he is 46 and no back problems...rats...i am very competitive...rats...!!  Well no matter as long as i keep setting challenges for myself and doing them i wil be more then CONTENT AND HAPPY  with that!!Coolbut gosh i gotta beat him at something......just one thing......Cry....!!

Alice: May i ask what you ate that was 24g of protein and 340 cals. sounds like a good thing for us weights /muscle/builders??????

My legs are not sore but don't feel much strength in them today sometimes i notice this, i am trying for more protein, anyway perhaps after 5 straight days of riding 1 hour aday i need to take a day off, let my muscles rest, does this sound logical, i do believe i gave someone else my own advice on this so must make sense..lolSmile

Well off to have lunch been tinkering on here and a couple other sites for a couple hours now, got run and have my "Asian island crunch salad, can hardly wait....yummy...i always look forward to that next meal, thankgod you don't gain weight just thinking about it eh????  I do love to eat that what got me into this mess originally, the difference now is moderation!!..EVERYTHING IN MODERATION....!!

TALK TO YOU LATER...."HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND GIRLS", AND REMEMBER don't go eat out and gain back everything you worked so hard to lose all week with bad food choices!!....

C= cabbage having that for dinner with turkey!!

BEB...AKA....EJB

star I'm an Ok golfer(handicap 20) but I play strictly to have fun though I do enjoy competitive golf.  The best part is hubby and I play together. I don't really care to play with ppl who take it tooo seriously  - I like the fresh air, sunshine, exercise, ppl and doing something with my friends and hubby!

Chris Can I come weigh in at your house??!Wink That's the kind of scale I need. Sorry no beef ideas that are quick - I usually make things like roast beef and mashed potatoes (for hubby his favorite meal) and beef stroganof which I cook all day in the crock pot. I bought the Flat Belly Diet book but after skimming it have not had time to read it. Basically 4 - 400 calorie meals each containing a MUFA.

snow Good job resisting - LOL you know what makes me resist is the calorie count on the package - once I look at that I'm like well there is no way I'm eating that many calories for this food!

Alice -I'll be anxious to hear what you think of Jillian. I did level 1 yesterday with 5lb weights without near as much difficulty as the first time and I did not get sore this time either. Managed to do 10 boy push-ups before wimping out to girl push-ups! I think you are probably a lot stronger than me.

Which reminds me - I am doing a push-up challenge (or attempting it LOL) with kyashiis - here is the link if anyone is interested

http://hundredpushups.com/week6.html. I think we are starting Monday if anyone here is interested.

robbie I am also 8-10 pounds heavier than I was in 1999 when we got married  - probably doesn't make you feel better but I'm in the same boat - REMEMBER we were going to say fit and healthy worked!Wink I didn't weigh today but will weigh over the weekend. I don't feel like I've lost even though I have been very "good" this week - 1200 calories give or take, an A every day but 1 and that was A minus, and exercised everyday this week! Couldn't get your link to work - here's how - open the page where recipe is posted go up to the url and R click then click copy , then come on here and post it to us by R clicking again and hit paste it should work that way. Your salad sounds good we'll def need to compare. Try to get the link to work for the eggplant thing too! You're really improving my menus!Smile

BEB - way to go on the 3# loss!!! and getting off the sugar trainSmile

C is for carrots! full of beta Carotene:10108 mcg

Hi everyone

I've really enjoyed reading everyone's posts today.

C is for cauliflower! LOW in calories, high fiber, High in manganese, pantothenic acid, phosporus, potassium, riboflavin, thiamin, B6 & C  Helps with keeping the blood sugar in balance - great for diabetics.   I love it! That Soup Bible has a great recipe for cauliflower soup. My mom used to cook it for the main course by steaming it and covering it with cheese. Okay, so the cheese isn't as healthy but it sure tasted good. Smile

My weigh in this morning is awesome! I'm 151.0!!! That's one pound away from my goal! I'm so thrilled. Watch out Snow, I'm almost to maintenance with you! Yahooo! I also took my measurements. I won't post them here but I did post them in my journal this morning if anyone wants to look.

Clharr - I think your idea of finding more to do to get moving is so key to a healthy lifestyle change. I've taken that approach and it's really made a difference. When I started, I had to make myself move. My goal was simple: Do something to make me sweat for at least 30 minutes a day. Now, I love being active. I still have a long way to go to be as active and strong as I want but my attitude has changed and I'm on my way for sure. I also love green beans. Have you tried them in a salad? Don't cook them, just cut them up real small and add them to a salad. They taste sweet and crunchy!

BEB - So sorry to hear about clairlaine! I hope she recovers quickly. I'm glad someone knew about what happened and could let us know. BTW, You can always get my phone number by going to my website. I think I have it posted in my profile but it's www.texas-midwife.com My business depends on me being found on the Internet. So I don't really worry people finding my number. So far, I've had no problems by being on the Net. If I want to remain annonomus I don't give out my name at all. Otherwise, I don't mind folks knowing who I am. Funny story about the walk home from the store. I'd love to see video. Smile

Bonnie - Goat cheese and beet salad? That sound interesting. I love beets but (confession) I have only eaten them canned.

Star - another golfer, huh? I've never golfed. ... Well, putt putt, does that count? Wink

Chris - 127.5? That's awesome! Look at it this way, if you see it once on the scale, you WILL see it again. Snow told me that once and it really helped me keep a positive outlook when I saw numbers too low to believe. And she is right, if you keep on doing what you are supposed to do, the trend is definitely going the right direction and you WILL see that number again. I love those foods on that list! I've always had a smaller tummy, too. (I carry my fat in my butt.) I wonder if there is a connection? I've always figured it's just hereditary. My mom was huge but always had a relatively small tummy.

Snow - That's so funny about the lizard salad. I hide things too or my husband will eat them all in one sitting, especially nuts. Smile

Moon (Alice) - I'm going to have to learn what you guys are talking about on those exercises. Working with weights is so new to me. I love it but I have so much to learn.

Robbie - 1.2 lbs less than last week! That's good. Don't think about it being "higher than a month ago" just focus on the fact that you lost 1.2 lbs in one week. That's awesome. You're headed the right direction. You'll reach that ideal weight eventually. Just celebrate the victories you deserve along the way. I love cabbage too. I'll have to try the slaw. BTW, the link showed up, so you must be doing something right.

Thank you everyone for thinking of my former apprentice. She is doing well and the pain isn't near as bad today. I ended up going to a false labor last night or as I prefer to call it, a "dress rehearsal". Wink Not so bad except it was a 5 hour round trip!

We're taking Larry's kitty, Rocky, to the vet today. He's 14 years old and we are afraid he's just at the end of his little life. But we want to check to see if there is anything we can do for him, just in case it is treatable. Poor thing. He's so sweet and he has been the best pet ever.

Have a good day everyone,

Beth

184.5  Cry  I want to be below 180 again!!!!

"C" is for carrots.  I get baby carrots and bring them to work for snacks.  Soo good and you can eat a lot of them.  Here is your nutrition lesson for the day:

Carrots are nutritional heroes, they store a goldmine of nutrients. No other vegetable or fruit contains as much carotene as carrots, which the body converts to vitamin A. This is a truly versatile vegetable and an excellent source of vitamins B and C as well as calcium pectate, an extraordinary pectin fibre that has been found to have cholesterol-lowering properties.

BEB:  I had a laugh at your hill story.  I did a similar thing in Yosemite trying to climb an icy path.  I finally ended up crawling up on my hands and knees with DH laughing and taking pictures from the rear.  That is one picture that will not be posted in my gallery.

Chris:  Chicken and waffles?  Never even heard of that.  Sounds very bizzare.  MUFA's hmmmm?  I will have to look into them.  DH and I have more belly than we should.  Really annoying because I never had much fat there before!!  Getting old is so fun...

Great job resisting temptation Snow.  That is how you stay in those size 3s.  A size I doubt I will ever get into.  (Always was a pear)

Gosh Robbie, it's kind of hard to imagine you 10 pounds less from your pictures. Is it possible that you're actually more muscular than you were then? Really, you look sooo good. Are you just REALLY good at picking clothes for your figure???

BEB, I guess great minds think alike...sorta. At lunchtime today I made a recipe for in the slow cooker that is basically a fancy beef stew. It has beef, garlic, vegetable, wine and a bunch of herbs in it. It's to be served with noodles so I bought whole wheat noodles. If it was the weekend, I would have made my own.

My apologies to all: C is for "crow". (I don't recommend it!) I shouldn't have commented on the 'diet' before looking into it more. I actually didn't know there was a book until I was looking for a link for the foods. I don't subscribe to Prevention so I can't re-read the article, but I think I probably mis-read OR they worded part in a somewhat sneaky way to make it sound more substantiated than I now believe it is. The question Alice asked is the obvious one. I just hate when articles say "studies show" and then don't site the study. I have great access here at the college when I actually have the source to look up. Undecided Oh, well, the plan is the same for me anyway. DH's good cholesterol levels are a bit low so MUFAs are what the doc recommended...and exercise of course!

Looks like exercise in Central PA this weekend will be shoveling snow!

hey chris!  congrats on the 7 pound loss!  hehe  yeah, new batteries...  good thing you were still home when your company arrived!  that article sounds really cool.  thanks for posting that!

robbie?  you're up still?  :(  bummer...  LOL  it's a stupid bearded dragon lizard.  hubby wanted it, well, her, & he don't even feed her.  i do!  i guess he figures the salad department is mine.

i'm up, too  :D  134.  that's my new high!  i am so freakin' happy, maybe someone should slap me...

that's too bad about brian.  well, by now you should know that you can't change a man, huh?  geez!  he's 370 now?!  yeah, i most always eat late now, but i try to be sensible.  i don't log anymore either & i don't really count.  i kind of count in my head sometimes.  well, maybe if i ate something really bad & i want to know if i can still get an A, or something.

man!  if i would push hubby to eat better & to try to lose weight, he'd probably blow up like a balloon, too!  he's gotta WANT IT & do it for himself.  otherwise, it's useless.  i never ate breakfast either.  i try to now.  i understand how important it is now!

i sure am glad you didn't get hurt.  ok, then it's not funny anymore.  it's hilarious!!!  :D  when i first started walking, i couldn't even make it down to the end of my street!  and there are only 2 houses on my street!  LOL  i still can't ride a bike worth a crap, though.  not enough muscle, i guess...  i wanted a bike for christmas last year, but there's nowhere to put one anyway.  i'd have to toss a chair in the livingroom.  hehe  i'd do it in a heartbeat!  oh geez...  then i'd be in trouble for riding all the time instead of walking...

yep!  everything in moderation!  except exercise...  you never can get enough of that!

Yea Bonny i hear that....Rick took it too seriously last year, getting angry at himself when he put a ball in the trees (which was most of the day)..lol, i was laughing, trying to get him to lighten up on himself, gosh it's only a GAME...(trying to impress me i think), and i had to straighten him out right from the beginning, the reason we are playing "fresh air, sunshine, countryside, scenic views, health and fun..who cares if it goes in the trees, or in the lake, and well if throughout the day i kick his butt in enjoying all of that..yahoo...shhhh..lol just kidding....not!!Sealed..........10 MALE pushups is good Bonny, wish i could but with my shoulder...nope!  I only did 2x 10 female....If you had of said sit-up challenge i would have joined in!! I am up to 40 started at 5...woohoo!..have to do them on the couch because of my back, but it works just as well, maybe i could buy one of those gym padded mats somewhere??????????

yea, snow i'm with Bonny there, if i look at the pkg and the  calories are to high forget it, and if the calories are to high then something else is like fat or sugar!!SealedJUST SAY NO!!Sealed

On the Letters, hey what would you guys do without me and my great imagination...Winkhehe..and although it may not be easy to cook with the letter of the day that day maybe if for the that week we at least try to incororate a few of them that would be cool!

I wish there were more comedians doing skits on wives hidding food from their hubbies, (i did it too), or the fridge and cupboards would be empty, i bet it wood be hilarious to boot!!  I hide the junk food from Kyle and give it out a little at a time or he'd eat it in one sitting instead of my healthy meals....i don't have to worry about most vegetables and fruits!!  Just the snacks!!, meat, nuts etc..!!  One day I went to make a chicken Tettrazzini and kyle had secretly eaten all the chicken pieces i had cooked and cut up the night before, what a hoot!!..Surprisedkids!!

Beth: The exercises i am talking about are located at www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/dumbbellexercis es.html if that's what you are talking about? They recommend 3 sets of 10 reps and then as time goes on i increase weight not reps as some people do...muscle madness!  Want to look like Jillian, god i wish i had her full lips!! Mine are small!, even with lipstick...hehe. For you i would start here with this site and add these other into your regime, just start slow and easy, when you are lifting weights you want to be able to do 3 sets of 10 so find a weight that isn't to light or to heavy, remember you don't want pain, but it shouldn't be easy to complete either...2lb, 5lb, 10, 12, 15, 20lbs dumbells to start would be prefect, and the plastic coated are better on your floors then the hard metal ones too...this site will get you started Beth!!It will tell you everything you want to know..just back page for home etc...i think the automated video is cute!

14yrs old for Rocky to be nearing the end seems young to me, maybe he is only sick....i hope so for your sake....i wil pray for the little furry friend !!

i'm sure i will be back.....hehehe...sorry if anyone thinks i am hogging space....isn't that a hoot.........HOGGING SPACE!!......BEB

Now if you go to this link you can see how I did that. Laughing And yes, I can tell you how I made that picture, but it is more complicated to explain. Laughing
