calling out to women 50+
I'd like to start this thread specifically for women who are 50 or over.
As a 53 year-old woman, myself, I am finding new challenges, unexpected difficulties and wonderful insights on my path to getting to and maintaining my health, weight and body shape.
What seemed to work for me as little as five years ago doesn't work quite the same anymore. My body doesn't seem to respond to what I consider healthy eating habits and good workout schedules as it even in my middle to late 40s'.
SO, I am would to hear from those out there who are finding themselves in situations. OR NOT, maybe you can enlighten the rest of us as to how you keep your shape, or how you're getting into better shape and a healthier overall lifestyle.
Hopefully this will be the start of something wonderful, educational, funny-offer up jokes anecdotes, whatever!
LET'S GET STARTED!
Reason: Moved from Health & Support to Motivation forum
Yes Bonnie: Maybe this is my Indian summer too up here..I didn't hear about us having one....we don't often get 15*C in November...lol.....glad you are enjoying all those classes, don't forget to rest! too eh! after all those shots you must be doing them in your sleep!
lol
Well Margaret as to the sun we had a rather crappy summer sunwise this year....I blame this bad weather all on 'global warming' nothing at all like when i was a kid in the 60's..then it seemed more like California 'sunny all the time' http://ezinearticles.com/?Why-Do-My-Muscles-G et-Sore-After-A-Workout?&id=198252 here is an artcle you should read on BODY workout soreness! I totally agree with Alice you can't be to easy on yourself you do have to push yourself, just keep an eye on your bp and a little soreness is perfectly fine, not being about to move is over doing it! Oh by the way don't foget to get enough protein because everytime we work out we are literally breaking down our muscles and rebuilding them..so you have to make sure to get enough protein..try the protein whey you add to shakes alot of us on here eat or drink...I add a scoop to my cereal, gives my fiber 1 great flavour!
'Have to take the bad with the good'..
like we have a choice....lol
I have talked Willa into going down to the lake for a small walk around the lake for a few minutes..but her back too is sore from doing yoga yesterday! Boy she keeps hurting her back and since the surgery she hzs had her share of troubles too!
Alice: You are so right, no pain no gain....RIGHT?!
lol Speaking of which hows your knees?
Chris: Still out there? Your SD hasn't killed you has she....just kidding!
lol
Glam: Still hanging in there I see, good for you, traveling where next? Do you ever get to Canada in the summers?
Well off to take a walk, yes walking? I know I like to ride but the wind is to cool on me now.....then I will come home and do my workout...SB and dumbbells!...
Oh and I did a bad girl thing the last few weeks and yesterday
...The hog!....and the week before..the chocolates are now all finally all gone and I am up 2 more lbs so I have DECIDED to get serious since I am wearing my bigger pants now!
I know Alice I feel a big kick coming>>>>>>>>>!!. ..KICK KICK KICK, OH and all the bad food is gone and only healthy food left....I guess I have to face facts my strength to deny 'TEMPTATION" only lasts a few days then I end up eating out of boredom.....and at night again....grrrr I have got to shxx or get off the pot! I am determined to see 159 before my birthday which means I have to lose 16lb now again......my mother taught me not to waste food so I couldn't get rid of those treats but they are gone now! God next month will be that xmas log I love so much....grrrr I have way to much time on my hands...hehehe![]()
Why do we self sabotage?? Any thoughts on this ???? girls??![]()
Be good, our rememberance day is Nov11 to pray, remember about the WW1 and WW11 times....
ahhh boy is war ever going to end everywhere, it seems we get peace in one place and then fighting breaks out somewhere else.....?
Well off get some VitD!....BEB![]()
Self Sabotage thats me!! I have been doing well and It could be the hormones playing up but this afternoon, if it didn't move, I ate it. Still within calorie allowance (just) but I hate being out of control. when I went to a weight control club a long, long time ago, I would do really well and go and eat stupid things which I didn't even want. WHY!!!!
Went to the beach today and have to say the wind was very keen. Saying that there were two very brave youngsters out with body boards in wetsuits of course, but still!! Actually it was probably warmer in the water than out. The sea was quite rough as well.
Sounds devine Margaret..the Sea!!
blueyedblonde: thanks for the link on soreness after workouts.
Ready for your kick, BEB? Here it comes -- KICK!!! You have no excuse to keep stocking your house with tempting stuff. Just don't buy it, then you can't eat it!
Margaret, I am impressed with your determination to keep your activity level high! So many women gain some weight, then use that as an excuse for total laziness. It is a vicious cycle - lack of activity leads to more weight gain, which leads to less activity, etc. I feel that a way we can love ourselves more is through exercise and general movement.
Tonight we are supposed to put Frontline on the cats to keep away the fleas. I don't know if I have quite enough energy left for this, but I'll try.
Alice
Golfed today...71 and sunny in central PA in November!! Def must be Indian summer - I could take this weather all year long
BEB - I would def eat more junk if it was here I simply don't buy it!! If you can't stay out of it don't buy it. I took an apple and a protein bar to the golf course for my snack
Queen of Mowing plans to mow one last time tomorrow after work. Then the plan for the week is body sculpting Tues Thurs and Pilates Wed. - that's 4 days of exercise.
It was a busy weekend so I've been lurking. I missed the nice weather that Bonnie spoke of in Pa. Meetings all day yesterday! Ug. You are amazing Bonnie! That's quite a week you have planned.
BEB, Alice gave you a good kick. You don't need that junk around the house. If you're ever tempted at the store again, be sure you buy a single serving only. It's one place you shouldn't try and economize!
I've been doing generally well, although I definitely slipped up Friday night with a very large bowl of ice cream. There's no more in the house and I think we'll keep it that way for quite a while. The sad part is that the ice cream I ate was pretty old and buried in the back of the freezer. NOT the tastiest! Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. It was the first thing that I've regretted eating in about 3 weeks. I think that's some kind of record for me.
When I bought those candies I had in my mind to send them to Kyle for xmas, as I already gave a box to shell out downstairs but something happened and it didn't work out that way!
Anyway I am back, and am stronger for it....!
Bonnie: Tape 'TBL' on Tuesday since you won't be home! Good for you on all that exercise.....and I totally agree it HAS to be 'Indian Summer', we haven't had an indian summer in November since I can't even remember when the last time was! They usually say after the 1st frost but I know we've had that....going up to 19C today which must be close to a record now if only the sun will come out it would be perfect weather for a bike ride!![]()
![]()
Alice: Thanks, and I didn't set out to buy those candies to eat, but my will power got low...anyway I won't buy anymore the sugar phase is gone back to workouts and deficiting...I still have to get down to 140+....s grrrr
Chris: I don't think ice cream goes bad just gets crystalized doesn't it? Anyway it's gone..good!![]()
FTF: TBL is on tonight!, are you out enjoying hiking or biking today?
Margaret: YW....and what new adventure are you tackling this week?
As for me never went with Willa yesterday..1st I call and she says great lets go out for a small walk down by the lake, then calls back and says her back is bothering her and she isn't going anywhere...okay I settle in and start watching a movie then she knocks on my door 3 hours later and wants to go.....women? I guess her bi-polar dictates her desires! Well I should not count on her to much i guess...bi-polar people are very unstable, or unpredictable I know they can't help it but I in my life need people I can count on and security I have had enough upset to last my lifetime...I guess I will just continue to do my own thing as usual.........![]()
speaking of which where is Ohio: Still out there working your butt off?
Well everyone have a beautiful Indian Summer day!
Well at least 2 of us anyway eh?...lol....BEB![]()
And I thought you were being so good, eating just one chocolate a day, BEB. "The best laid plans of mice and men..."
I'm going to bike to work, I think, but walk my doggie first.
Old ice cream -- Not so nice. I had a cone at Baskin Robbins yesterday, very fresh ice cream, same result. If you're going to indulge make it worth your while, Chris. Actually I think you've done very well to go 3 weeks with no regrets. You're doing great :)
Yes Hats off to Chris.....want to send me your willpower....I remember the summer of 2007 when i went ice-cream bizerk...remember that my intense addiction to 'strawberry cheesecake ice-cream' that year....I seem to be good for a few days then all of a sudden binge. I quess it is harder to lose and easier to maintain this lesson I have learned.....except If this iwhere true why have i put back on 9 lbs from summer...oohs......
I am serious though 'no more cheating' I am really tired of constantl saying next spring..next spring I will get there its 2010 or never!!!!!!!!!!!!grrrr![]()
Bex: Hows your own personal 20lb loss goal going?? I guess we know were your lost lbs ended up.....
over here!
Beb - you must not bring the junk in, as Alice says, it's the undoing for sure. BANISH JUNK!! If you need comfort, buy a very special and beautiful teacup along with some gourmet tea and brew yourself a cup each evening, savoring the aroma and banishing all thoughts of cookies and candy and treats from your mind. I am down 11 and things are going slowly but they are going, so rawk on everybody and stay strong!
Bonnie - Queen of Mowing is about to retire for the season. Hang up your blades, girl. Before you know it, it will be April. Congrats on a successful season.
Back to work today. No exciting new adventures, just went to the gym and worked a little harder!!! I think I am going to know about it tomorrow. I so want to make it this time.
Marg: what work do you do, I don't know if anyone asked?
Bex: Thankyou that is a lovely idea.....a nice cup of English Tea..hmmmm
I am a P.A. I encourage people with disablilties to have some independence.
Hi all!
I have my cookie jar filled with a large variety of tea bags.
My weight is still coming off one half pound at a time.
We have an acre of land with about twenty trees on it. I have been raking leaves all week long. My hubby got on the roof and now I have more to rake.
The dog is fine but it cost us over four hundred dollars to find out. It was worth it!
My mom has a cold so I am not going to visit her this week.
I hope that everyone is doing well! Welcome newbies!
Later~ SAM
SAM, glad you are still making things go in the right direction. Slow but steady is great! I have no trees but the front side walk gets covered from those that blow in. Fortunately, for the most part, they blow on down the street eventually! lol. I'm no longer a fan of raking since it's not cool to jump in the piles at 50-something.
Here's a little piece of common sense. I STILL struggle to wait 20' before having seconds. I think my family just eats too fast. It's really hard to get used to slowing everyone down. I've been eating very healthy at meals, vegys dominate with just a bit of a starch (if any) and 1 serving of protein. Unfortunately, I pretty often still eat enough so that I feel full. I really want to get used to feeling satisfied without feeling full. I think it would be better to have more healthy snacks between meals than to really fill up that way. I don't want Bonnie's problems, but I wish I had her good sense about portions.
Thanks for the link Chris. I like this one best of all:
9. Keep sweets out of the house
Why it’s good: You’ll be less likely to devour a whole carton of ice cream or box of chocolates in one sitting.
Why it might backfire: If you feel deprived, you’re more likely to order the jumbo-size double-fudge sundae the next time you’re at the ice cream shop. Having some tempting treats on hand also teaches you to build willpower, according to research published in the Journal of Consumer Research. “It allows you to develop a strategy for resisting them or controlling how much you consume,” explains lead author Kelly Geyskens, PhD.
Bottom line: If you can’t have a little ice cream (or another personal trigger food) without overdoing it, ban it from the house. Buy treats that you can enjoy in small quantities and feel satisfied, like individually wrapped dark chocolate squares.
Such good advice! I'm having trouble with night time eating since we've had the time change. I guess I'll just have to get on the treadmill to counteract the urge to eat! Which reminds me TBL is on tonight.
I'm glad to see you are still with us SAM! I'm off to get ready to bike to work :)
Good article, Chris. I have to ban the bad stuff. It calls to me from the cupboard.![]()
FTF: Biking to work, how cool is that! You sure have it lucky climate wise that you can do that most of the year eh?
Chris: Like FTF that was my favorite one too..
...I read that article I think they were writing it just for us too... chocolates, ice cream..all our weaknesses hehehe and of course the dreading night eating...I am happy to report I had urges last night but did NOT subcomb to temptation, I just kept telling myself why I am doing this....next summers bikini...grrr....basically that article felt safe they are taking a neutral stand the good and bad about every instance...safe place to be...but have a little chocolate on hand to build will power might be great if you are only 'maintaining' weight because you are allowed those extra calories a day but it makes absolutely no sense to me now because I am so restricted in how many calories I can have total a day...which is 1000-1200 since I am not very active these days.
Oh and in that article about devouring chocolate cake late one evening after been good for so long boy that sounds like me.....an extremist...I'd be good for weeks then one night a hole box of chocolates or tub of ice cream or such...so yes I don't keep them in the house USUALLY!..lol![]()
Marg: what is a P.A. ? Sounds interesting work..working with disabilities I know this first hand being on permanent back disability..I personally wonder with my back disability what will I do when I get older and can't get around to shop etc? Is this when I call up Salvation army or something I obviously can't afford to pay anyone for these services...lol
Bex: calls to you from the cupboard...I hear that..lol....hehehehe![]()

Remember how much you have to work out to burn 100 calories okay!
Sam, good to hear from you! I'm glad your dog is okay, but I couldn't find the post that told what was wrong. Can you fill me in?
For me it is much better to have nothing tempting in the cupboard, especially things that are small. It is one thing to eat something large, like a whole bagel or a piece of pie. It is much easier to justify eating just one little chocolate candy, or other bite-sized treat. But then I always go back for another and another. Right now all that is in my cupboard that could be considered a snack is sunflower seeds. They are too small to bother with just one, and too difficult to eat a handful because you have to shell each one.
We put Frontline on four of the cats this morning. Two more to go. We did the most difficult one first (Pepper). He hates it with a vengance. I think it is because you put the Frontline in the same area you give a shot and he remembers those shots at the vet. But we got it done without suffering a bite, although he was making awful noises and swinging his head around to try to nail any human part he could.
Alice
