calling out to women 50+

Quote  |  Reply

I'd like to start this thread specifically for women who are 50 or over.

As a 53 year-old woman, myself, I am finding new challenges, unexpected difficulties and wonderful insights on my path to getting to and maintaining my health, weight and body shape.

What seemed to work for me as little as five years ago doesn't work quite the same anymore. My body doesn't seem to respond to what I consider healthy eating habits and good workout schedules as it even in my middle to late 40s'.

SO, I am would to hear from those out there who are finding themselves in situations. OR NOT, maybe you can enlighten the rest of us as to how you keep your shape, or how you're getting into better shape and a healthier overall lifestyle.

Hopefully this will be the start of something wonderful, educational, funny-offer up jokes anecdotes, whatever!

LET'S GET STARTED!

Hi Robbie: The Democratic convention. I suppose that does make for some displacement! I have several neices that live in Denver. But I don't think any of them work downtown. I have not followed any of the convention speakers as of yet.

I live southwest of Colorado Springs. You won't be passing the Adams Family Casita. Mini Munster Mansion.  lol.  Thank you for wishing me free time.

I haven't been on the scales in awhile. I don't have to get on them. I'm up. I can feel it.  Not up a lot, but I'm up. I need to get the balance back in my life. I close on my old home Sept 5th. Things are slowly coming back to order.

Wishing balance to all of my CC friends!

Peg

robbie Good for you - only up  a pound after all that great cooking your Mother did - that's great!! I was sorry to hear about your Uncle but don't we all wish to live to 90+.

Decided against talking to that lady - you are right somehow when you try to help you end up the one ppl are mad at and hey they are all adults if they don't like what she is doing they will have to learn to speak up. Do plan to use ohio's idea and next year in bold print on our beginning year handout - print This league is for fun and enjoyment please do not spoil others fun by giving unwanted advice while golfing!! But she's also right, the person doing it won't think that applies to her.

Peg Looking forward to following the progress on your new home. It's hard to watch what you eat when things are stressful and hectic. The first couple days of school ...I have been slammed at work with new kids, paper work a mile high etc - hard to make good eating choices when you are so busy and stressed. I got on my certified scale at work - still up that pesky poundUndecided but I WILL get below 120 eventually...even if it takes me another year! I am healthy so hard to complain.

I bought a new pedometer to wear at work - you can hook it up to your computer to keep track of you step progress - it just came yesterday after work - I should have had it on yesterday I'm sure I put about 5 miles on my feet yesterday! All over the building seeing teachers about kids. I'm hoping it will help me prevent the winter weight gain - those pesky 5-6 pounds I put on in winter. Tonight when I have time I need to get it programmed so I can start wearing it!

My daughter and her husband have completed their home study and all the paper work needed for their Bulgarian adoption. Now the paper work goes to the agency, immigration and then on to Bulgaria. That all takes about 3 months then they will be on a list to get a little girl!Smile Thye have to go over there 2x - so I'll be asking for prayers then!  A little nervous about that.

Everyone Have a great day!

Hi Everyone,

Sounds like a lot of us are back to work with busy schedules. I hope you are all doing well.

I finally delivered one of the babies I've been waiting on. Baby boy born last night at 8:50pm ~ 8.6 lbs ~ He and mom are both doing great. I'm on call for 3 others right now but I'm relieved to have this one born because this family lives about an hour away from the others. I also think we will have another birth before the weekend is over.

I also had to brag because the scale was an all time low this morning. 173.6 ! I have now officially lost 20 lbs since starting cc. [happy, happy happy] Now, I wasn't able to eat much yesterday (or sleep) because of the birth. So some of that could come back over the next day or so. But I'm thrilled anyway. I'm now finally smaller than I remember being in many many years. So every pound lost from here on out will feel particularly rewarding. I can't wait to be in the 160's. People are starting to treat me like I'm not overweight. I haven't had that in a LONG time. I love it!

Peg - I've been to Colorado Springs years ago. It's beautiful in that area. Post some pictures of your house as you get projects done. That's good to hear that your other home is about done. I'm sure that will be nice to have behind you.

Bonton - That's so exciting about your daughter adopting a baby!

Your pedometer sounds like a neat one. I think if you keep up with your walking and just stay aware of how much you exercise that you will do much better at keeping those winter pounds off. But I can relate. It's the winter that has always been my hardest time too. But instead of gaining a pesky 4-5 lbs, I have gained 25-35 for the past few years. I am determined to not let that happen again this year. I know I can do it. And if I can do it, you can too! So stay strong! We can hold each other accountable. Wink

Robbie - When my parents were alive, I still had kids at home, too. My husband found a book that talked about that time of our lives as the "sandwich years". It's all too common to be caring for aging parents before we finished raising our kids. I know how stressful that can be because I have been there. But before you know it, you'll be past this stressful stage of your life. My parents are now both gone. I miss them but I have lots of sweet memories, too. My kids are also grown and independent. Life is very different now and I do miss some things but it's also a very good place to be.

Everyone - Tomorrow's Friday! This week is going by so fast. I hope you all are doing well. Keep counting those calories and think positive!

~ Beth

Hi All

Bon : that sounds exciting about the Bulgarian adoption … I wish your daughter and her husband luck and much joy from the potential new addition.   I think you’re probably right to not say anything to the annoying golf lady.  If your fellow golfers don’t like her continued “advice” they need to learn to answer back.  You don’t want to end up having people mad at you.  (and Ohio’s advice about putting something in your newsletter is excellent!)

Peg : love the sound of your property.  I’d love to buy a place like that and do it up.  Looking forward to progress reports and photos.

Robbie : thank you for being so positive about my “one miserable pound”… really when I look at it, 8lbs lost so far isn’t so bad.  But we all want to lose faster.  At least slower generally helps with keeping it off!  Oh and I could have sworn that a lady I saw at the YMCA when I was working out Wednesday was you!  So, like your photos.

Beth : Wow, 20 lbs, congratulations!  It’s a wonderful feeling hitting one of those major milestones, isn’t it!

Everyone else –have a great holiday weekend.  Indulge a bit (not a lot!) and enjoy.

Joanna

joanna - thanks for the well wishes on the adoption. We are excited to get a little girl! Nickolas is such a joy we can't wait for the next! Yep - already was working on next year's letter for golf league and put it in bold and big print "This league if for fun! Please do not spoil others fun by giving unwanted advice"

Speaking of him - LOL - he's coming tonight and staying until tomorrow when he will go to the other Gram's house for the night. Think I'll take him to the golf course and let him hit againCool - he loved it last time. My hubby is at a funeral in Ohio today - his Uncle passed away.

Beth - Congrats on the 20 pounds - that's quite an accomplishment!!! Be proud of yourself!

How come in the summer I can forget to eat and work all day in my yard (not good but true) and when I start back to work I come home starving??? LOL I think it is a conditioned response or  a stress reliever. Have tried drinking 6oz skim milk before leaving work - has not worked to curb the after school munchies - will have a whole glass next week and see if it helps. Drinking a diet coke as I type LOLLaughing

Everyone have a great weekend - my grass needs cut and I plan to play golf!! No surprises there - Anika and Queen of MowingWink

Ohio - "... please tell me I'm not the only one who's done this? I wore my top backwards yesterday :(  ..."

Yes, I've done that myself. But the funniest was when my apprentice wore her t-shirt inside out to a birth once. We were all so tired from being woken up early that no one noticed it until the birth was over. And then of course, we teased her a lot. The next thing we know she's got it on right side out but no one noticed her leave to go change it. So of course we teased her about going to change it. She still hasn't lived it down. But all the teasing was done in fun and she laughs about it, too. Wink

Bonton - I can relate to having "munchies" at certain times. For me, it's when I drive in the car. And I do that a lot when I have to do home visits for my clients. I have learned to anticipate the munchies and come prepared with some little healthy snack that takes a lot of chewing. For example a baggie with raisens and almonds in it. I premeasure it for calories and eat it real slow. This seems to help me. And of course, I try to remember lots of water. That helps too. But if I don't take these things with me, I'm more likely to give into stopping for something from a convienance store. And we all know how healthy that is! Undecided

So, just a suggestion: Why don't you take something with you to school and keep it in your car for snacking on the way home. Maybe that will help you at least snack on something healthy when you get those munchies.

I just finished my body sculpting class at the Y and I can't do squatts worth squatt. Embarassed But I keep trying and the instructor is really encouraging. The rest of the workout I can keep up with pretty well. I'm sure I'll be sore tomorrow or the next day. I've noticed since I've been working out with weights that it is day 2 afterwards that I feel it the most. I've only been doing the weights for a couple of weeks but I'm already starting to feel a bit stronger. So I guess there is hope for me.

I'm still waiting on three more babies. Can't believe I haven't been called by one lady who is now overdue. I'm sure she is more frustrated than me, though.

Have a great weekend, everyone

~ Beth

ohio - As the lady who spent most of her daughters wedding with her shoes on the wrong feet, I will say nothing about backwards t-shirts.

Beth - I also used to take two days to get sore.  It has gone down to one day lately.  Not sure I really understand this.  It only took one day when I was younger.  I have decided it must be because I am now in better shape.

I am overweight!!!!  The scale finally dipped below 180 which puts me out of the obese category for the first time in 10 years.  I am so happy!  My boot camp instructor wants me to take a picture with my 'fat pants' to put on her website.  I never thought I would be a 'successful weight loss' model.

On the not so good news side, my husband has a hernia and is scheduled for surgery on Thursday.  He has been in so much pain that he is actually looking forward to it.  At least it holds out the hope of an end to the pain.

By brother in-law left his big german shepard with his parents while he traveled out of the country for a few months.  My in-laws have a small condo with no yard.  The dog was driving them crazy.  So, last night I volunteered to take care of the dog instead.  My cat is not amused.  The dog wants to chase the cat, but this a crotchety, old kitty and she is not interested in running.  She attacks the dog instead.  So far, no injuries but they both want to be in the house all the time and we have to keep them apart.  I hope they will eventually reach some kind of accommodation.

Reading with delight, but no time to write. Going to our cabin for Labor Day to chop down pine beetle kill, then to St. Louis for a case. Keep up the great work all!

clharr - Congratulations on the weight loss and being in the 170's! That's awesome!

So sorry to hear about your husband needing surgery. I'll pray it goes well and he gets some relief quickly. That's got to hurt.

Robbie - Have a great time at your cabin this Labor Day!

Snow - Congratulations on the new grandbaby! I saw his picture in your gallery and he is so cute and so alert. I know you must be proud. He's adorable. We can't wait to hear how your visit with him went.

Have a great Labor Day, everyone. I wonder if I will be "labor sitting" on Labor Day. Tongue out

~ Beth

snowOh so glad you answered - I was getting worried - Landon is beautiful!!!! You'll lose what you gained - you have the know how now - and you know that you can do it. Hope you had a great visit with your daughter and the new grandbaby! Congratulations Grandma!

Carol  Sorry to hear your husband has to have surgery - I'll say a prayer that all goes well and he is feeling better quickly. Congrats on getting into the overweight category!! Before long you'll be in the normal range I just know it - especially since you are doing boot camp! LOL about your shoes - I still don't know exactly how you did that for so long LOLLaughing

robbie Have fun at your cabin! Sounds like you'll be burning calories!  Safe travel to St Louis too

Beth  Hope your babies wait until after Monday so you can enjoy your weekend! Thanks for the suggestions Beth - I do have healthy snacks at work and maybe need to add one with my skim milk before I leave there. Now that the first week is over maybe I won't be so stressed and so hungry! LOL Have stayed off the scale since last Tues - I feel like I'm up so I don't want to know. Will keep trying to eat healthy and get on when I feel light!Wink Also - got TOM ??? what is this??? second one since July after not having TOM for over a year. Maybe that is why I was so hungry.

Took Nick to the golf course last night and let him putt and then we went down to a hole and I teed up balls about 40 yards out - he put 3 right on the green! A little Tiger Woods in the making! Wink He loves it! and he actually can hit the ball - it's kind of amazing because no one ever showed him - he just picked up the club and started hitting. I took his new driver and putter out of the set I got him for his birthday next month - he won't know the difference! LOL

Got the grass cut today then hubby and I went and played 9 holes - it was one of those days I would have like to play 18 I was playing really well - had a 43 on the front - that's only 7 over par. But my husband was tired - he had to drive to Akron yesterday for his Uncle's viewing and had gotten up at 5:30 for work. The camp members have their fantasy football draft tonight so us girls are going out to dinner. I'm making macaroni salad for Monday - just waiting for the noodles to cook!  Not really on the low cal plan but want to have it once before winter! LOL

hi guys!  :D  i really, really missed all of you!  i'm really tired right now, but i'll fill you all in tomorrow.  for sure!

LOL  it looks like i have some catching up to do!

Congratulations Snow. The baby is adorable. He looks so alert and developed for a month. You must be so proud and delighted. Enjoy.

Ohio—about the backwards t-shirt, I was shopping in an artsy/craftsy designer store, trying on a dress with a low neckline. I was looking for a camisole or something to wear under the dress but the saleslady suggested I just wear the dress backwards for a more modest look! So just think of yourself as artistic, thinking outside the envelope!

I’ve been treading water, or for a more positive spin maintaining, this past month, up and down the same 2 lbs., still 3 from the goal I achieved in May. I think I’m also getting a little crazy with measuring, counting, and logging. So I’ll try no food logging for a week and see how it goes.

I went to an Oriental dance studio for an open house. So much fun, so empowering. The director said every woman can dance and every woman deserves to dance! The participants looked like Everywoman, all ages, all shapes, having fun. Classes begin this week.

oh yeah!  landon is doing great!  :D  he was so alert right from the beginning.  they do apgar tests, whatever they are.  LOL  but he got a 8 & then a 9!  that's out of 10.  i took my 1st video & he looked right at me!

the ride was horrible & the other gramma was horrible.  thank god that's over, but it sure was awesome to be there!

they are coming up here next for a wedding on the 26th.  i can't wait!

i hope you are all doing great!  i'm up over 140 again...  which is disgusting, but i don't care.  school is starting wednesday & i'll have the mornings to myself to exercise without being in trouble for it.  :D

LOL snow - it's hard to be away from those grandbabies! When Nick came - I went to her house once a week - 130 mile round trip after working all day! LOL Couldn't stand not seeing him. Still can't go much past 2 weeks - but I'm lucky they live at least that close.

Being back to work is making me so tired - I'm just not used to sitting in front of a computer most of the day - I can do yardwork for 10 hours and not be tired! Oh well I will adjust. Trying to start logging again - not losing - haven't been on the scales in a week - hopefully logging will help if I can fit it in.

Played in an ABCD golf tournament yesterday - my team won! We were 7 under par with a 63 next best team 65. It was a lot of funSmile Queen of mowing wll be at it tonight - hubby has league - and I have to go to the store and get coffee filters - went down to make coffee this am - no filters - I was so deparate I used a paper towel which I cut to fit!Laughing I cannot go without my morning coffee!

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Had half our kids and grandkids for picnic yesterday - the other half couldn't make it.

yeah, it's tough.  i really wanted to help her out more, but i planned on coming home with hubby too.  oh well...  at least she sends me pic & stuff.  i just got a pic a few minutes ago that she labelled, "me & bad boy".  LOL  i texted her back that he can't be a bad boy, he's too sweet!

i can sit in front of a computer all day, but i can't do yardwork for 5 minutes.  i need to start logging again too, but not when i'm going to parties & buffets.  :D  yep!  another party yesterday & chinese buffet today.  that's too hard to log.  i wish i could go a week without weighing myself, but i'd probably be up 10 pounds!  i can't wait that long!

you sure are an awesome golfer AND on an awesome team!  enjoy your mowing.  hopefully it'll help you lose weight.  i don't drink coffee.  i drink diet coke or pepsi.

it must've been nice having 1/2 your kids & grandkids over!

Hello everyone!

Bonton:  Let me add my most sincere congrats on your daughters adoption.  And how he's home?  How wonderful is that?

Southern:  Congrats to you on your weight loss - fantastic!  I doubt you'll put much back on, if you do at all.  You've been working hard toward this and hard work pays off-eventually!

Ohio - well about wearing your top back to front, a- I've done that more times I care to admit.  My favoaurite (?) is wearing my tops inside out.  How can I not see the label?  I don't know.  Nice to know someone else needs a course in 'dressing thyself 101'!

Hope you're all doing well, and nice to see things really changing for the gang, h ere.

renee

Good news - got on the scale back to 121.4!! Yippee!! SmileSure wish I could drop 3 more pounds but so far darn scale just doesn't seem to want to budge out of the 120's. Have been logging for the most part since back to work - maybe it will help. Drinking skim milk before leaving work along with a snack is helping not to eat when I get home. Once I start back to the gym it will be better but it's still golfing weather! LOLCool

I've been tired since going back to work - must be the mental drain because I can work outside in my yard all day and not get tired.

Had golf league Wed. night - well that lady I talked about earlier unloaded on me - she started screaming and swearing at me on the  7th hole - so loud that others 3 holes behind us could hear her - it was TERRIBLE - then she picked up her ball and left. She was complaining about the golf course and I didn't agree with her but I was nice in what I said - guess with her you are supposed to agree with everything she says . Ruined my game and my night. But I did nothing wrong so I am not apologizing to her. Anyways - I play golf to have fun so now I added my own name to others who will NOT play with her. I took her that night so others wouldn't have to - so much for my nice gesture. Makes you wonder what is wrong with some ppl????

Where is everyone?? It's been quiet on here. Beth  - are you delivering babies??? robbie- how was your trip to your cabin? Peg - how are things at your new house? Carol - how is your hubby - hope surgery went well and he is feeling better ohio - how is the new job going? phox , joanna, moon- where are you? one and everyone I'll keep you posted how adoption process for our little girl is progressing! Their paper work will take at least 3-4 months

Everyone - have a great evening!

Thanks for asking.  The surgery went well.  He is back at home, reading political blogs and ranting about them, so I guess he is fine.  He is pain, of course, but he is eating and moving around.  That is what is important.

The dogsitting is also going reasonably well.  The dog is terrified of my cat.  He will dance around her and tease her a bit but never goes too close.  The cat doesn't seem too mind too much.  There is nothing funnier than seeing an 8 pound cat doing a low speed chase of an 80 pound dog.

We bought a couple of "Dog Whisperer" books on dog training.  I have never had a dog quite this big and my husband hasn't had a dog since childhood.  Training is important when the dog looks more like a pony than a dog.  I hope BIL gets back soon.

Bonton:  I think you are right.  That woman is just trouble.  If no one will play with her, maybe she will get the hint and find another league to annoy.

Hi all,

I am back and have caught up on all the news. Made for some fun reading. You guys crack me up with your clothes on backwards and your lunatic golf partners and nutty parents. Everyone seems to be holding onto some reasonable weight stability and even some losses. Great work! I managed to maintain through my vacation with no logging so I am thoroughly pleased i didn't pack on a few. I think it was all the miles I logged shopping at the outlet malls that saved me. Holy Hannah there were some good bargains to be had! I brought back 8 pairs of shoes! Don't ask me how many that makes in the closet now because I haven't counted. Probably afraid to know. Saw Jersey Boys in Vegas and really enjoyed it. Palm Desert was quiet and a bit more humid than usual but soooo nice to get away from it all!

Puppy has arrived and is doing very well. No crying at night even. He was nameless for a few days and then once we discovered how much he enjoys chucking plastic bowls around the kitchen he was baptized Tupper. He's loads of fun and manages to walk a fair distance with me a couple of times a day. The cats are cool with him and he has only had a couple of swats for getting a bit too nosey and boisterous so all is well in the menagerie at present.

I'm going back to work on Monday, not that I actually have to "go" anywhere because my office is at home, but just the thought of summer being over and vacation time ending makes me sad.

Snow - congrats on your new grandson. I can see the family resemblance.

Bon - time to tell that beyotch off once and for all. Put it in writing annonymously if you have to but she needs medication, or a swift kick in the patootie. I'll volunteer.

Beth - you are my inspiration. I bet you will love the Y. Looking forward to pics of the black dress on you. Treat yourself to some new shoes when it fits! LOL.

Carol - you deserve a medal for taking on an 80 pound dog!

Peg- looking forward to inside pics of your new reno project. My kitchen reno is just about to get underway. We can commiserate about living in a war zone together!

Phox - oriental dance? Sounds intriguing. I'll look it up on You Tube to see what it's like. I have a friend who does African drum beat dancing. Wild!

Robbie -kill the pine beetles! They have already invaded Canada!

Ciao for now all!
