caloric values of teas

Quote  |  Reply

I'm a big hot tea drinker and i was wondering if anyone knows if there are calories in various types of teas. I've always heard that tea doesn't have any calories, but i question that, especially with various herbal teas that have peices of fruit in them....i'm not talking about pre-bottled stuff, or about teas that have been sweetened with sugar. i have mostly loose-leaf teas, the majority of which are from teavana...the ones that i'm especially wondering about are:

-sweet fruit garden

-azteca fire

-banana calypso

I tried sending an email to the company, but never received a response. Thanks for any help...

I don't think there are any calories in tea.
I have never heard of tea having calories. And if it does have calories, I'm pretty sure it would need to be listed on the packaging.
P.S. - the banana calypso flavor sounds really good. Where do you get it from?

since i'm buying it loose, it doesn't really have packaging, they just fill up a baggie with the amount of the tea you want to purchase...and the azteca fire, for example, has cocoa in it, and it does say in its description that it contains milk, so i feel like it would have to have calories, i just don't know how many, and i'd like to know so i can log it

(from teavana.com)

Azteca Fire Herbal Tea
"Everyone's favorite blend of chocolate and strawberries with a spicy twist. Blend consists of crushed cocoa, apple bits, strawberry pieces, chocolate bits, safflower petals, and crushed chili pods." This tea contains milk.

the banana tea, along with most of my teas, is from teavana. if there isn't one near you, you can purchase it online...the banana one is really good, i'm a big fan...

Banana Calypso Herbal Tea
"Herbal blend of apple, banana, pineapple, grape bits, orange and lemon peels, and marigold petals. A tropical and naturally sweet flavor that children of all ages will love."

Hmm, okay. I missed where you said it was loose tea. And, yes, if it contains cocoa and milk, I would assume there have to be some calories too. Probably not that many, but some nonetheless. I hope the company replies to your email Smile
Okay I just looked it up and most tea I found had 2 calories per cup.  I really wouldn't worry about it unless you're drinking like 50 cups a day and then that's still only 100 calories.

i agree, i wouldnt even worry about logging 2 calories.

it would burn more just lifting the cup down to drink it

tea in tea bags doesnt have any calories that you would need to log.

but some other teas like chai tea in powder form has some.

I've seen no more than 1 calorie per tea bag; that was on a "sweet honey berry" tea to which I believe they might have added some sort of sweet flavoring.

It's not enough to bother about, in my mind. Simple inaccuracies in your scale and variations the consistency of your food will make an error in your calorie measurements that's quite a bit greater than 1 calorie... So far as I can estimate, my daily error's about +/- 50 calories... Anyway, measuring tea calories doesn't make much sense, unless you're drinking 100 cups a day or something.
