Calorie-Count 5k! This Weekend! (Calling all runners)

Go post in the new Results Thread!

Don't forget to buy your t-shirt!  They are now on sale here!!

(Participant List moved to the bottom of the post)

********************************************* ***

Are you a runner?  Do you want to be a runner?  Minimally, do you think you can walk 5k?  If yes, then this is the challenge for you!

Since it seems as though we have a few aspiring runners just starting out right now, and also since those of us who run currently can always use another race to work towards, I'd like to propose a virtual 5k for any interested calorie-count member.

The 5k distance is 3.1 miles.  May seem like a lot right now, but there are beginner runner programs that can get you at or near that distance in 9 weeks, like the Couch to 5k program.  To give you training time (don't want anyone pushing themselves too hard and risking injury!!) I'm proposing a virtual 5k the weekend of March 17 and 18.  That is 10 1/2 weeks from now.

There is no rule that you have to run the full distance!!  You can do run/walk intervals, or walk the entire distance, whichever you prefer!  If any cyclists want in on the action, just let me know what a similar appropriate distance would be on a bike and we'll do that too.  :)

If you can find a 5k to run in your city that weekend, perfect!  I know many cities do have St Patty's day races.  Active.com is a good website to check for local events.

If not, just plot out a 5k (3.1 mile) course outside, or plan to run 3.1 on your treadmill.  There's a 5 mile run here that day, but no local 5ks that I can find, so I'll likely be doing a solo run myself.   I'm planning mine for 3/17, but wanted to leave both days as options so more people can participate.

Feel free to use this thread to 'sign up', ask running questions, post practice times, and of course to post your results.  I'll be posting my time, but if you aren't comfortable with that you should still feel free to post that you finished the distance, and give us a 'race report'.  :)

So, who's in??

Sure. I'm in :)

Hopefully it's warm enough!
count me in too.  I think that is the weekend we are running an actual 5k in town :) but I will throw in one for practice too!
i am absolutely in! great idea, jenn!  I think I'm going to be running a 5-mile race on the 12th - I don't see any races the weekend of the 17th and 18th. but i'll definitely add in a practice 5K if I can't find a real one around here!
me too.
ROFLMAO!  pandajenn, are you watching over my shoulder?  I just finished registration for the 100% Irish for a Day 5K

Now I have to plan what to wear... do I go with my kilt, or my Guinness shorts?
Nope, I wasn't, but I had a feeling you'd be running in a kilt that day.  I would go with the Guinness shorts myself, but I suppose you can wear those on other occassions while the kilt doesn't get as much street time...  ;)
LOL We'll have to post pictures for this 5K!  You get bonus points for dressing up you know!  The kilt it is!   And what do you think of this hat?

Sláinte!!
I, for one, refuse to do a 5K in a hat!
Or a Kilt!

>;D
Hi everybody,

I saw that you where all young people, not me, I'm 46 and have around 75 pounds to lose but I hope this time it will be the good one...A friend of mine just sent me " Beginner's 5km fun run: 8-week training programme" yesterday (bupa site) and I did start my first day of running yesterday so if you don't have objections, I will like to add myself to this challenge, this way it will gives me more motivation.

Linda
lilou- if you look at our profiles we have all been here for a while and been working hard! :)

I know a few of us did our first 5ks in 2006 so we are all kinda new at it.

YOU CAN do it!!!!  We are all here to help!
Hi all,

Jenn, please count me in as well.  This will be great motivation to continue my training.  I currently jog/walk 3 - 4 miles every other day, and am working toward running the distance without having to stop and walk to catch my breath...

Becca
Lisa----- make it to Binghamton that weekend???? There are a few going on here that weekend, if you wanted to run together.

slappy, i'm totally in! that's a fantastic idea! i have to confirm with the hubby first, of course. the one in Vestal is a much shorter drive for me, so I'd prefer that one. I just did a bunch of searching to see if there are other alternatives, and I'm not coming up with anything. I don't know if race schedules aren't really out yet, or if there aren't really that many races that day. Regardless, I'll let you know what my hubby says!
would hubby run too?  Mine will be running but I told him I want him to set his own time and not worry about me.  He ran track in high school and ran with me the whole 5k last time and he hates his time- men! LOL

I know he is a faster runner than me and you and I were pretty close with our times for our first 5ks I think.

The Vestal one is the one we were looking at too!  yippee skippie!!! it would be a huge push for me to know we could run together!
Hi slappy,

I didn't know that I was able to see your profile by clicking on your picture so I went see your profile and can tell you that you are a good motivator girl. You  have a looooottttt of friends and really good of what you are doing actually.

Thanks you for the motivation and I will start with your thread to do 5 km jogging in few weeks.

thanks again
thanks for the compliment!  We all have our ups and downs but thats the great part about this site- you have friends here to help you and totally understand what you are going thru!
slappy, he won't run (he's just starting biking, actually), but I think he'll come along to cheer us on! He just replied to my email and said go for it - we're doing a weight loss competition from this friday through March 15th, so that can be a little reward for getting through it!
Awesome!!!! you sure it isnt to long of a drive for you guys?  maybe there is a half way point?  Im really pumped up now for a run!!!!!

thanks!
I want to start running again!! I just got a nike hr monitor, and new shoes- oh, and I downloaded the couch 2 5k program- lets do this!!!
Sure. Maybe I can improve my time. I love running.
