while calorie counting.. i've never really worked out

Quote  |  Reply

because i know that if i work out i will A)need more food B)get hungrier

but now that a large amount of the bulk weight is gone i really want to start working out daily... i don't like going to the gym so i want to start taking classes and maybe join some sports teams

the only way i can see myself running aorund for hours is if there a reason to, like a game or competition

it's hard for me as an adult [23 years old] to find sports teams to join that are not competetive. I haven't played a lot of sports and don't really want to play seriously just yet, I just want to play for fun with some other people. I don't have many friends who would be interested, does anybody know of any good ways to find sports teams to play with as a beginner?

Running is cheap it can be fitted into any calender, any location, and is suitable for any level of fitness.  The physical and mental benefits are amazing and all you need is a decent pair of trainers.  Of course if you'd told me 5 years ago that I would find it hard to live without running, I would have died laughing - so I understand your reluctance.  The couch to 5K programme is a great for beginners and you could see if running might be something that you would like.

Alternatively you could take up cycling - perhaps incorporate exercise by cycling to work.   Or you could start off with a few classes in your local gym - my personal favourite is boxfit, because it incorporates cardio and muscle fitness, but most classes you will find at the gym are great fun and challenging at any level of fitness.

Take a few months to try out some different things and find some that are right for you.

Have fun, and good luck

I just started the routine in The New Rules of Lifting for Women. It's seriously like 30 min 3 times a week, but it will kick your @ss (in a good way). Much of the gym stuff lists 'at home alternatives' and I bought all the equipment I need atm for under 100 dollars.

Personally, I've always enjoyed weight training more than cardio, because I like something I get better at every week.

There are lots of running/cycling clubs around.  Beach volleyball or softball in a rec league are non-competitive.  Take up racquetball/squash or tennis with a friend or join a club.  Don't know if you can skate but I play pick up hockey all winter which is as intense as you want it to be.  Swimming is good exercise although it's generally a solo sport.  Judo/karate/martial arts are a great workout and you learn useful skills.   Lots of stuff to do!!

Check out your local YMCA; they have all kinds of adult sports teams/leagues that are fun and not too competitive.  Does your work have any corporate games?  Those can be good as well.

Ultimate frisbee and kickball teams tend to be less serious.

I'd look around on craig's list - sometimes people post on there.

I know you said you don't like going to the gym, but at my gym I do three classes a week that are included in my membership. I can go to as many as I want but... three seems good. :)

Maybe you should look into gyms with a variety of classes, or unique classes that sound fun to you. I know I've seen fun ones like "disco spinning" offered at Crunch, though I don't go there... sadface. Anyway, if you liked the classes and then decided you'd like to start lifting, etc, that equipment would be available to you as well.

community centres

rec softball, soccer, volleyball, etc. leagues

walking/hiking/running clubs

if you want to exercise, it's not hard to find a way.

I'm 23 as well and I play in a non-competitive indoor soccer league in the winter months. Usually adult sports leagues are set up with different "tiers" for different skills levels, and there's almost always one for beginniners and just for fun. Also known as "beer league". Good times all around really.

I would check out the city's website for where ever you live, they usually have links to recreational associations in your area.
