Calorie Deficit Confusion

Quote  |  Reply

This may be a dumb question, but does anyone know whether it matters if your calorie deficit needs to be consistent to lose weight.   For example, if you have a bad weekend and go 1,000+ on each of Saturday and Sunday and then -1,000 Monday through Thursday and -1,400 on Friday (net -3,400 for the week) will you (presumably) lose a pound that week?

It's the total deficit over the week that ultimately determines whether you lose weight or not.  However, it's best to keep within a reasonably steady 'window' rather than vary your intake too wildly.  The world is full of very overweight people that eat next to nothing all week and then pig out at the weekend.

The other thing to remember is that losing weight is only the tip of the ice-berg.  When you get to your healthy weight you'll want to stay there, presumably.  If you've never got out of the habit of overdoing it at the weekend you'll be back at your old weight PDQ... if you use your weight-loss time to find ways to manage weekends more sensibly you'll be more likely to maintain your new weight.

x2 what jane said.

Try to eat 6 or 7 small meals consisting of a small portion. You wont be so attempted to over eat because you will eat again in about an hour or 2. You will keep your energy level and feel full. Everyone warns not to skip breakfast, but don't just eat right away if you are not hungry..  eat only if you are hungry. Another tip..or 2, if you crave sweets..brush your teeth...  if you get really hungry and are tempted to grab something quick..  grab a big glass of water and make the meal you will eat.. No quick grab and go items..  keep it healthy. Apples or non- sweetened pickles make a good snack for the 'just got to have something' times. The most important thing of all..  is to eliminate the reason why you overeat...whether it be a habit, or an emotional reason.

I appreciate your taking time to reply, but you didn't even answer my question and simply took the opportunity to dispense advise.  Not everyone is looking for advise, some are justing looking for the answer to a question.
