Calorie-Dense Foods for Weight LOSS?
I was just curious, do any of you prefer to eat smaller quantities of more calorie-dense food while losing weight?
I eat plenty of vegetables and fruit, and until now I was all about eating super low calorie foods and filling up on them, and eating all the time.
Now, I much more prefer eating all those veggies and fruits, but other than that, I find myself feeling better if I eat more calorie-dense foods, but less of it. I guess it's because I get bloated so much so it feels better to not be sooooo full! But what I mean is, instead of two slices oflow calorie bread, one slice of regular bread, or better yet, a good authentic rye bread or something of the sort. Instead of a few egg whites, one egg. I feel more satisfied and less blaoted.
I was wondering if anyone else does this? Eating a smaller volume of food but getting the same calories by eating "normal" (not 'diet') foods which are more calorie-dense?
I never really went in for "diet" foods - other than lowfat dairy (which I have to have since I can't tolerate the full fat stuff). I'd rather eat a 100 calorie slice of "real" bread over two 50 calorie slices of "diet" bread any day.
INteresting post!
Sometimes low calorie foods just do it and despite the low cal, you find yourself eating big old volumes and having them add up anyway.
I cycle. Its like I just know sometimes to go for that small bowl of black beans or handful of peanuts because I just know I dont want bulk but a slamdunk on a hunger.
Usually though I work the low calorie dense foods because - well, because I quit smoking and ever since I find when I'd normally stop eating and light up but now cant Im still wanting to eat unfortunately so I'll either go for a SF dessert or start off with a larger but lower cal food.
I do agree with you. I feel better eating small amounts of high-calorie but also high-nutrient food, such as nuts, beans, filling fruits like bananas, etc. The way you are eating is fine, but just make sure it's healthy too. :)
Hmm, tough one. I`m maintaining and I`ll usually plan my meals around whatever veggies we have around, are in season, or I`m craving. If they end up being low cal, I compensate by adding some high cal stuff as snacks - olives, nuts, cheese. If they are higher cal I`ll just munch on carrots and have fat free yogurt.
It`s a pretty good balance and it works fine for me. But I`ll admit leaning more towards high volume low cal stuff while dieting, to avoid feeling deprived and having an empty stomach. I love eating large quantities of food, unfortunately. =/
I don't think it is possible (tho I have done it in the past and fought the cravings) for me to eat a small quantity of a calorie dense food such as nuts or beans...at least not my favorites (peanuts and garbanzos). When I eat I like to have lots of low cal things like fruits and veggies with my higher calorie entree to fill me up. I don't eat low cal diet food...that doesn't do it for me. With things like bread...the calories are what they are, they're high (esp since I eat two slices). I find that when you start finding things that are lower fat/lower cal/lower sugar, you find larger amounts of less healthy ingredients (sodium, artificial stuff). If what you do works for who, who is anyone to tell you different?
I haven't given up any foods, I just control the portion size. For instance, right now I have a square of very good dark chocolate waiting for me. The portion size is 4 pieces at 220 calories, but I'm having just one at 55 calories.
I often plan in a little treat. It's satisfying and keeps me from craving things. That's not to say I don't slip now and then and eat all 4 pieces, but that's rare and it only brings me closer to my maintenance calories.
I usually prefer calorie dense small portions throughout my day, but large low cal at night (that big dinner habit is hard to break, so I find a big ol' plate of salad takes care of it).
However, now that it's disgustingly hot every day (90+ degrees and humid enough that the air feels like molasses), I can't stand the full feeling high cal/protein foods give me, so I end up snacking on fruits most of the day.
I know this thread is pretty "old," but I just stumbled across it and have recently found myself to prefer less food, more calorie dense. I hate feeling bloated. Everytime I feel bloated I just want to eat more and more, because
I am not satisfied.
So, I was just wondering: Anyone who less, but more caloric food, What does a typical day of eating look like for you?
^Obviously I don't eat like this every day, but an example might be:
Breakfast - 1c fiber one caramel delight w/ 1/2c skim milk, a banana (345)
Lunch - pasta w/ 4 oz chicken and veggies (spinach, broccoli, peppers), a small salad (350)
Snack - almonds and a yogurt (250)
Snack - a protein bar (200)
Dinner - cooked veggies or a salad, boca burger in a sandwich w/ slice of cheese, a potato; WW ice cream bar (550)
Basically, I would aim for lots of protien, a few "bad" snacks every once in a while (maybe a few oreos or another treat), healthy fats (almonds, yogurt, fish, other dairy, etc.), and just low-volume things. My only problem is it's sometimes hard to think of something calorie dense and small and yet HEALTHY, because I can't be eating oreos every day!!
Thanks, that helps. I have some experimenting to do with my current diet to get everything working for me, but I will figure it out. Thanks again.
