Answer
A person with diabetes should eat the same diet as everyone else: balanced, high in fiber and plant oils and low in animal fat. In your case, the diet is limited to 1500 calories to avoid overtaxing the system and to promote weight loss. A balanced diet at 1500 calories consists of 1.5 cups of fruit, 2 cups of vegetables, 5 oz of grain, 4-5 oz of meat/beans, 2 cups of milk, 3 - 4 tsp of oil, and 150 calories for condiments, etc. You might then spread your carbohydrates into about 50 grams for each of your 3-meals. Your medications and other conditions must also be considered. You should meet with a registered dietitian for diabeticmeal planning and education. Most U.S. insurers cover that service.
