I've recently been put on a 1,000 calorie diet by my endocrinologist. Does anyone have any ideas of foods low in calories that I can use to make up a daily diet? I've lost 60lbs so far and have another 30 to go. Or 20 according to my Dr. :) I'm not familar with the calorie counts in food so any advice would be helpful. I've hit a stand still and I'm not losing any weight at the moment.

I have recently been put on a similar diet myself. I did a little research and experimenting and I think your best bet is egg whites. One egg white from a large egg has only 16 calories. If you take three and mix them with a splash of skim milk and some black pepper it's both filling, delicious, and low-cal. I also have rinsed tuna (takes out some of that sodium) with salad, Fiber one cereal (plain) mixed with a few almonds or other nuts as extremely low cal snacks. For back ups on extreme ice-cream cravings, I keep low cal pudding cups in the freezer. It takes time to eat these so there's no binging involved and you get the same satisfaction. There are also many low cal recipes on this site, check them out, have fun with your experimenting and good luck.

Geez! I wish my endocrinologists would tell me something! He's watched me go from 160 in October 2007 to 230 this January and hasn't said a damn thing!!!!!
Because of the pills HE put me on!
URRGGGHHH!
What a great thread! I am so glad to see an intelligent discussion about a less-than-1200 calorie a day diet.
Good luck!

My doctor also told me that it was all about calories and not exercise. He said that for me it will be restricting calories and little exercise. Like walking only. We decided that when I reach my goal weight I will probably not be able to eat over 1200 calories a day at the most if I want to maintain it. Normally I would think he was nuts but for the first time in my life I have lost and kept off 60lbs. So I think he might be on to something. It sucks to have this metabolism, but at least I found a way to work with it.
Im insulin resistant and my endocrinologist told me the exact opposite. She has been telling me that i need to do exercise every day because exercise is the most important tool to turn around the insulin resistance. she also talks to me about calories of course, but i cant imagine a doctor telling to eat so little and stop working out as much.
Having this metabolism sucks for sure and I understand doing whatever works for you. I have lost 4 lbs in two months and i have been pretty strict with myself. The ironic thing is that i recently found out that i have been undereating (about 1200 calories a day) and now that I have upped them to about 1700-1800 a day, I am losing weight again. I have lost about 1.5 lbs this week.
The biggest thing that i'd be concerned about is that at some point, so few calories is going to really old and once you start eating more you could gain all the weight back at lightening speed. There are lots of really, really fit people on this forum (check the fitness forum) and they eat over 2000 calories because they have gotten their bodies into good shape. Thats why i think my endo talks about exercising being the key, because exercising gets your body fit, whereas eating less just makes you smaller, ya know.
I am for 1000 calories a day. Sometimes I go over but as long as I exercise my net cals remain about there. I have yet to hit 1200 calories this week.
Aside from being hungry at night it's not that hard. Really. It's a matter of choosing the right foods. If you eat a lot of veg/fruit you can basically stuff yourself senseless. (not that I propose you do that.)
I am learning that it's more about what you eat rather then how much. Tonight I had an amazing dinner of roast chicken breast, snap peas, squash and zuchinni. I had enough calories left over that I was able to have a delicious peanut butter bar for dessert!
Everyone is different and we all require a different amount of calories per day. Chances are your dr. knows what he's talking about!
I"m rooting for you.
Are you doing it under doctor's orders (and supervision) due to a medical condition (as was the case for the original poster)? If not, it's not safe and you should not promote it on this site.
No one ever starved eating quality 1000 calories a day. Fresh vegetables, lean meats, berries, and whole grains make up 95% of all I eat. Very few sweets, maybe one dessert portion a month. All I have to do is look in the mirror to get motivated to not snack, not overeat. You can't eat delivery pizza and make excuses for why you ate it. I learned to separate food issues from emotional issues. Food is fuel to keep me healthy nothing else.
Something you (the OP) said sparked a question in me. You said you weren't sure of what the calories were in what you eat. So, how can you possibly be sure that eating more than 1,000 calories will not aid you in losing weight? It's just that what you may have thought to be a balanced meal actualy had way too many calories. Ijust don't understand how you can be so sure that you absolutely cannot lose weight on anything more than 1,000 calories if youhav no idea how manycalories are in the foods you normally eat.
I eat at total of 1038 calories a day. here is what it looks like
8am- 1 pk reduced sugar instant quacker oatmeal
10:30- 1/4 cup plain yougot & 1/2 cup unsweatened apple sauce
11:30 - 2 slices weight watchers toast, 1/2 can tuna, 1 tbs mustard
1:30 - 1 cup mixed steamed veggies, 1 tsp honey
3:00 - 1 pk sugar free jello
4:00 - 2 slices weight watchers toast, 1 apple, 1 cup mixed veggies steamed, 1/2 can tuna, 1 tbs mustard
7:00 - 1 cup brown rice, 1 cup steamed veggies, 1 tsp soy sauce.
I also drink 80 oz of water a day and work out 5 days a week 30 min crdio, 30 min weights.
I find with this diet and the spread out of food throughout the day I am never hungry. I also take a multi vitamin to make up for lack of other nutrience.
Hope this helps :)
If YOUR DR!! gave you the "diet"............ PERHAPS HE ALSO GAVE YOU DETAILS ABOUT IT.... and not just tell you to eat 1000cals a day....especially if you expressed to him your cluelessness on counting calories.
Something doesnt add up here![]()
