That's not really so hard to believe. Imagine the amount of physical work your average person does in a day... and that's 2000 calories. It's not hard to believe that a collegiate athlete would be doing three times as much, physically, as your average person.
Many athletes consume that much just to maintain but in his case they probably want him to gain weight to play football.
I can see the need, but can't fathom stomaching all that food! I would love to know what a daily menu would be like...what does that actually look like food wise?
A double cheeseburger with fries and a twelve pack of Bud. Or a Bloomin' Onion ;-)

Maybe I should be a football player....
I was talking to a runner one time--he ran a minimum of about 20 miles a day or something crazy. He said he ate between 4000-6000 calories a day. he said he would try to eat stuff with value--proteins, vegetables, fruits, --but then he said he'd throw in a whole pizza too... so odd to me. I never know what to think about how much i should eat. Sometimes I think if I ate JUST when I felt hunger, and only until I was satisfied (not "full") that I could probably eat anything I wanted and not be fat at all. I think i have a naturally small appetite. I just eat as a hobby.
I'm sure he's lifting like a maniac too! My brother and my cousin both did this when they went to college. I don't know exactly what their calorie intake was, but they both put on like 50 pounds over the summer! After they were done with all the lifting and two a days that they had during college, they had major trouble controlling their weight! I hate that football programs do this to these kids!!
The Amish eat anywhere between 3000 and 7000 calories on average. And they have the lowest amount of obesity in the US.
Maybe the Amish men, not the women. Most of them are very obese. My mother lives in Amish country in PA and I would beg to differ on that.
Lance Armstrong, while still competing, ate 7000 cals a day and he wasn't exactly fat either. You have to eat for your occupation. If I were farming with a team of horses instead of sitting at this desk all day I'd have to eat a lot more too. Maybe a Bloomin' Onion AND a slice of cheesecake.
Geez, now I want a bloomin Onion!!
Actually a Bloomin' Onion is only about 2100 cals but a plate of cheese fries comes in at 3000.

*Shrug* The percentage for being overweight (following the BMI index, which doesn't account for muscle, mind you..and every Amish person I know has been muscular) in the Amish community nation wide is 26% -- a lot lower than the US national percentage of 66%.
Beg to differ all you please, it's hard to argue with statistics.
Edited to source stats: http://walking.about.com/cs/measure/a/amish01 0704.htm
High Activity = Lower Body FatNone of the men were obese, and only 2 of the women were obese, an overall rate of 4% obesity as measured as a BMI of 30 or more. This compares to 14.9% obesity rate in Canada and 30.9% in the USA.
Overweight rates were also far below average. Only 26% were overweight, which is half of the rate for Canadians and one third the rate of the USA.
Of note is that the obesity rates for this community do not compare to that of more sedentary Amish communities where they work in tourist shops and furniture factories. In those communities the obesity rate is similar to their non-Amish neighbors. It might be predicted that it is the high-activity farming lifestyle that keeps this Amish community lean.
I could totally eat 6K calories a day---I'm an eating machine!
And therein lies the problem! :-)
I may be relatively small, but I am with you on that one bernasha. I am an eating machine too. If I really wanted to I could find a way to get 6,000 calories. I absolutely love food ... in particular all the food that is not so healthy. So if I were eating all the foods I love, then it would be easy to get that much a day.
maybe it's because i'm in canada...but what the heck is a bloomin onion lol
Delseo, it's like a spikey ball of calories.
lol ok meleba...thx...that really clears things up
OMG that's looks sooo good...and yet soooo bad! i can hear my arteries slamming shut from just thinking about eating one LOL......but i guess i'll be adding "go to the outback and order a bloomin' onion" to my 'bucket list'
