Is a 2300 Calorie Difference to much?

Howdy Everyone,

I started CC a couple of days ago and according to my Burn meter my body burns approximately 3200 calories a day. Now my apparent calorie intake for a day should be around 1700 according to the meter. I have been hitting the gym or walk or running everyday and on average burn about 800 more calories. So as it stands if i burn 4000 calories a day and I only intake 1700 is that spread too much.

I'm 21 years old, 5'10, and 230 pounds, I figured my average intake was 3500 a day before i started to count and exercise. Is that change in diet and calorie burn too much of a spread?

My goal weight is 180.

That is quite a big difference. How did you come up with 3200 calories burn? What activity do you set it to? If you set it to moderate/lightly active then that accounts for those 800 calories burned at the gym already.

Make sure you are adding in your activities to your activity log. This will help your burn meter adjust and personalize to you. As far as I know (going by when I set up my account) you choose your daily caloric need yourself. You can adjust it higher or lower in your settings. Normally you are only going to want a difference between burn and intake of 1000. That will give you the 2 lb a week weight loss that is recommended.

I just plugged in your stats.  You burn 2470 on sedentary.  Add 800 calories to that from exercise and you get 3270. Do you have a very active job where you're carrying heavy stuff and walking for 8-10 hours per day or something?  What do you do for a living?

You should aim to lose no more than 1% of your body weight per week.  Which would make the deficit you're aiming for right around 1000.

3270-1000=2270 calories you should eat per day.

If you actually do burn 4000, eat 3k.  Too big of a deficit will cause your metabolism to slow down.  That's really not cool.

Because you're only 21 you're going to find that the CC calorie tools are a little inaccurate... ie. they'll underestimate your energy needs slightly.

1700 is certainly too low.  Re-enter your stats and set the CC activity level to 'very active'... then work with that average.  I wouldn't be surprised if you need 2700-2900 cals a day in order to maintain your health, keep your energy levels up and also lose weight at the same time.   Choose nutritious wholefoods so that your body can work well on fewer calories. 

If you find you're regularly losing more than 2 or 3lbs a week then you should increase your intake a little more... Good luck

 

When i plugged in all my stats in orignally it said i burn 3200 calories sedentary. I went to put in my stats again and then looked and it said 2460 calories. So I'm confused with that. In any case I work for an ISP in canada I spent most of my time either at my desk or working on electronic equipment. I do drive a decent amount to other places and work on stuff. I burn the extra 800 calories a day, four times a week because i started to go to the gym. I didn't think i was supposed to include that into my burn meter.

Also i went for a calorie advice to tell me how much i should eat per day after i re-entered in my stats and it said 1640 at first then 1550, and now 1500, I haven't actually changed my eating amount per day.  But if it says i burn 2460 doing nothing then I should eat around 1500, but when i work out at the gym i should eat more to keep the spread to 1000?

Anyway, please let me know if I'm off track here.

You could do it that way (1500 cals on non workout days and 2200 on workout days), or you could eat an average of 1850 daily.  You'd still get the 7000 calorie deficit each week either way.
