A calorie is a calorie...?

Is it true that it doesn't matter what you eat, as long as you have a calorie deficit you'll lose weight?

For example, can someone eating 1200kcals of cakes and chocolate per day lose as much weight as someone eating 1200kcals of fruit and vegetables per day?

A recent thread on the same question: http://caloriecount.about.com/source-calories -ft152936#1

one word answer, yes.  however, to feel full/satisfied a nutrional calorie is best versus the empty calorie.  volumetrics is a case in point:  plate full of fiber rich veggies and some lean protein vs. 1/2 a hamburger.  what will fulfill your hunger longer ?
