Calorie target - mistake

Quote  |  Reply

I have been trying to figure out why the weight isn't coming off.  I figured out today that I had my burn meter figures set incorrectly.  I should be only eating 1350 calories.  I have been eating around 1750, even though I have been working out, I was barely losing .2-.5 pounds a week.  This should work better now.

It happens. Everything is fixable :)

I believe the appropriate term, at this juncture, is "Whoops." ;D

No worries. We all make mistakes. :) Hope that works better for you. :)

I actually found the opposite to be true. I started at arund 1450, felt tired all the time and no weight loss, then upped it to around 17-1800 and I felt much more energyful and weight started working its way off.

I think the first few weeks are about experimentation to find what the right level of activity/caloric intake is for you.

Have fun!

Fixing the "whoops" was great, having my spouse go "See i told you your calories were too high" was just annoying.  But all is well. I had to make a few minor adjustments, but it is okay.  I found that I was adding an extra 300-400 calories at night becasue I hadn't met my limit and wanted to make sure I wasn't under eating, so cut them out and I will be okay.

Assuming the stats that show up when I hover my cursor over your pic are still accurate, even if you were sedentary, this is what I get:

Your Estimated BMR (calculated at http://phord.com/cc):
BMR=1757 :: RMR=2108

Your customized recommendation:
EAT 1757 calories :: BURN 2108 calories :: LOSE 0.7 lb per week

If you are exercising, you should be losing even more.

I'm with sweetigem - I don't think lowering your calorie intake is the answer. Maybe just make sure that you counting accurately? You've been on CC for a while, right? - had you been losing before?

I have been on here awhile, but wasn't consistent with my logging or actual committment to losing weight.  I find that eating 1750 calories a day does not promote weight loss for me.  The only time I lost weight was on Weight Watchers.  Based on the point system my intake was about 1400-1500 calories a day.  So I would still nee to cut at least 250 calories from the 1750.  I am now walking 4-5 miles 4 times a week (on a good week it is 6 times a week)  i am going to go with a calorie range of 1450-1550 with the walking and see what happens over the next two weeks.  I am also increasing my protein and fat.  I tend to run very low on those.  My carb intake on the other hand is high.  I do eat a lot of light bread, high fiber oatmeal, english muffins, etc. I am adding the old stand by of eggs (egg beaters), tuna, chicken, and skim milk back into the menu.  I do eat these things, but tend to go low on the milk.  The egg beaters will help beef up my breakfast.

As you are pointing out - the calculators don't always work for everyone.

Best of luck!

Theresa -

My stats are about the same as yours (5'8" - 230), and I have found the same as you.  At 1750 I was lucky to lose .5 a week, but if I stick around 1200-1300 I have better success.  I also walk about 3.5 miles (on the treadmill at a 9% grade) 3 times a week.  When I first started and posted about no results, I was also told to up my calories.  Didn't work - so I think amethystgirl is right on!

Update.  By making the small calorie adjustment (lowered by 350 calories). I lost 1.6 pounds last week.  that is a loss I can work with.  We shall see how it goes this week and next week.

I also read that people who are do list themselves at sedintary don't always log their exercise becasue it already factored in.  Well I was not only set at a higher activity level, but I was also logging the workouts and eating to compensate to ensure I didn't go below a daily 100 calorie deficeit, so in essence I was "double dipping" in the calorie pool.  Thank goodness there are people that ask the questions that I don't think about, yet they relate.

Woot for the update.

People have this "you have to eat more to lose more" mentality that doesn't make sense to me. I'm 5'2 and I don't work out daily. Eating more than 1,200-1,400 isn't going to help me lose weight, if anything it'll help maintian but not lose.

Eating more than I have to was the reason I became slightly overweight. Sadly I can't eat more to lose more like some lucky people :]

Good lucky Terry!
