What is Nut Butter?

Peanut butter, probably the most popular nut butter, is an example of nut butter. It is not the only one, however! Nut butter, which is made by crushing nuts to the point where it becomes a spreadable paste, can be made from almost any type of nut! A close popular is almond butter, but butter made of walnuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pistachios, etc. are also sold. It can also be made from pumpkin, sunflower, and sesame seeds. In addition to the different types of nuts, different textures are sold as well. You can buy nut butter made from raw nuts for a mild taste or roasted nuts for a more intense taste. You can also buy creamy butter or chunky butter, which contains whole chunks of the nut and is not as spreadable.

Nutritional Content of Nut Butter

Depending on the type of nut used, the nutrition profile of the various nut butters varies. Typically however, they do have several things in common. Since they are made of nuts, which are high in fat, the butter will also have a high fat content. For example, peanut butter contains about 16 grams of fat per serving. They can all also be a source of protein, although they do not provide all of the essential amino acids.
