What is in American Cheese?
Whether in a grilled cheese sandwich, in a burger, or just as a snack, American cheese has earned a bad reputation as a “processed cheese.” In the past, it was simply a mixture of different cheddar cheeses and Colby, a cow’s milk cheese. Nowadays, it is made from several ingredients. The most common American cheese will contain a milk blend, milk fats, milk solids, whey protein concentrates, and other fats. It may also contain coloring, which accounts for the yellow slices of cheese that are often seen in the sandwiches and burgers.
Is American Cheese Healthy?
Many ask: Is American cheese good for you or is American cheese bad for you? A common brand, Kraft, produces singles that are very popular in cooking and with kids. A single slice of Kraft American Singles contains 70 calories, 5 grams of fat, 20 mg of cholesterol (7% of your daily recommended allowance), and 270 mg of sodium. Putting a few slices in a grilled cheese sandwich or over a burger will make those numbers add up and may not be the best option for dieters. Despite the criticism of the high fat and sodium content, however, a single slice does contain 4 grams of protein and is a good source of calcium, providing 250 mg per slice.
