Is Apple Pie Good For You?
Although an apple a day may keep the doctor away, eating apples in the form of an apple pie may not be the best way to get your daily dose. Apple pies, which are simply apples baked in a crust, are very calorie rich. A single piece (1/8 of a 9 inch pie) may provide over 400 calories, depending on the ingredients! Most of those calories come from carbohydrates and fat. Additionally, the sugar content is quite high. Although you can eat it once in a while, it is not recommended to get your recommended serving of fruit through this treat.
Cutting Calories in Apple Pie
Pies have been around since 1301 (the first record of the word “pie”), and since then many variations on recipes have been developed. Whether store-bought or homemade, there is a way to cut the calories when indulging in this treat. When buying a ready-made pie or crust, opt for the lower calorie version. Nowadays, companies pride on producing a “healthier” version of their item, so it shouldn’t be difficult to buy. When preparing a boxed apple pie, you can also alter the ingredients to make it lower in calories yourself. Use less sugar, or light butter instead of full-fat butter. The taste will only differ slightly, but the health benefits are endless. Of course, the best option is to make your own homemade pie. This way, you know exactly what you’re putting in it, and can control all the ingredients.
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
